This song came out when I was pregnant. My husband was told he had to choose the funeral homes for both me and our daughter. That neither of us would live. We both made it strictly by the grace of God. But this song was hard for him to hear back then. Now our daughter is 24.

If you look at the father at the first of the video very close it’s not the same man at the end of the the video. The doctor said it was a baby boy. As you listen and look at the end the little boy is not the same boy. There a quick glimpse of a woman coming toward them. In my opinion the boy at the en is Johnny’s son named Johnny after his dad and that glimpse is “that same sweet girl” the got his prayer!

@8:00 That moment happen to my wife. Having never heard this song before I said similar words as I hit the floor on my knees. My wife hemorrhaged after giving birth do our first son. She was complaining saying that she peed herself in the bed, and wanted to clean herself up. It was when I went to remove the sheet did I see the pool of blood that laid in the hospital bed. It rolled of the bed into the floor like a stream. I quickly ran for the nurse, and they made me talk with other nurses in the hallway while they frantically worked on my wife in the room. Thankfully my story has a happy ending like the song. They were able to stop the bleeding, and we were able to discharge about three days later while bringing home a healthy baby boy.

I’m so happy for you. My Mum was born very prematurely in 1938, and my Nan was haemorrhaging badly. The doctor just shook his head, and told Pop to go home. Pop rode his bicycle home and was sitting on the back step just looking towards the heavens when suddenly one of the stars started getting bigger and bigger and brighter and brighter. Pop got back on his bicycle and raced back to the hospital where the doctor greeted him, and said I don’t know how, but they have both somehow pulled through, and they are going to be alright. Sadly Nan and Pop lost their second baby under the same circumstances, but eight years after Mum was born they had a little boy. People take childbirth for granted, but things can still go wrong.

That is why we appreciate the now. When my Mom passed, my Dad kept crying, " My Baby Girl is all alone, she needs me." I knew then I was never the baby girl. My Mom was, as I held my Dad back from jumping into the grave with her. That was tough. He made me promise no resuscitation if anything happened to him. 4 months later the hospital nurse called. He'd had a stroke. I spoke with him one last time. Kept my promise as hard as it was to do. Another call came that night. To say he passed too. That he probably did not feel anything. I felt the loss of him and of my Mom all over again. Difficult being an only child and most aunts and uncles already gone just before them. So this song always gets me. I 😢

I am so, so very sorry for your losses. Keep in thought that Mom & Dad are reunited and holding one another tight. They patiently await to be fully reunited after your gift & story of your life unfolds and last curtain calls... To walk through those beautiful gates and sights only meant for our paradise lost but now found. I'm sorry I get to deep in comments but thinking of seeing my own mother & brother again gives me goosebumps & chills knowing that death is not the end but aknew beginning of flowing energy that simply changes but never destroyed. I am going to see my aunt's, uncle's, cousins, brother and my dear mother one day🥺🙏🏻!! My father took losing mom really bad he could not talk to anyone for months. My brother accidentally shot himself then 1 yr later my mother just let go of this world, mom's sister died 2mos after mom.. these souls were taken back home in only 4 1/2 years most my family were gone. It's me and dad now.... Worst thing was with mom the doctor said she would be fine so I left hospital to go eat, shower and change cloths so on way back not even six hours later doctor calls and says please hurry to hospital because mom's organs were completely shutting down.. my God why?... I held mama's hand as she writhed and shook in pain, the doctor took me over to the hallway with my wife and said something that will stay with me forever.. " We can save her.. but she will be in horrible pain & agony, we can pro-long her life and at best 6 months. Do you want to us to pro-long her life or give her a big dose of morphine & other drugs to completely stop her pain and gently pass? ' I had to choose because dad was too messed up to make any decisions... I chose for her pain to end... And after I looked at my wife and said my God what have I done..... 😞?... But the promise God keeps is what helps me hold on, try to live life to the fullest and pray that I take up God's offer so we can have a big reunification one day!!!!!! 🙏🏻

When I was giving birth to our son, I had to have an emergency c-section because our son was in severe distress and they had to literally run me on the gurney from the delivery room to an OR with a Dr. and a nurse riding on it prepping me as we were moving. We got to the OR and they didn’t even put drapes up they just started cutting so I watched my own c-section, and my then husband (we’re divorced now but on good terms) walked in as they were opening me up, all he could say to me at that moment was “I saw your organs” to which I, obviously in shock, responded “which ones,” we both were in emergency medicine at one point. As soon as they got our son out he was immediately fine and my ex had enough time to hold him for a minute and put him next to me so I could give him a kiss before I started bleeding out. So the doctors had to grab our son from him and get him out while they fought to keep me from dying. Thankfully after 4 units of blood, that they didn’t even have the time to warm up because everything happened so fast, and some amazing naval surgeons at Balboa hospital being rock stars they got me stabilized. My ex that was a corpsman(medic) said that was the single scariest situation of his life, it was for me until I knew our sone was in the clear then I only remember bits and pieces. FYI when you’re actively dying your brain releases a ton of chemicals that can make some people extremely calm, shock is a hell of a thing.

She lives folks. You see him and his child in the end as he helps the child across the small stream and then his wife running to catch up with the picnic basket. Per Wikipedia: The song tells the story of two young lovers dealing with difficult scenarios at three different stages in their lives. In each situation, the man does all he can to make sure that different people "don't take the girl." In the first verse, the young man (Johnny) is eight years old, about to go on a fishing trip with his father. A young, unnamed girl, apparently Johnny's age, is also present, with a fishing pole in her hand. Johnny doesn't want the girl to come fishing with them. So he begs his father to "take any boy in the world / Daddy, please, don't take the girl". The song's second verse finds Johnny and the girl ten years later, now as teenagers. The two have since fallen in love and are now dating. As Johnny and his girlfriend are on a date at the "picture show" (i.e., the movie theater), they encounter a stranger with a gun. The man grabs the girl's arm and tells Johnny to give in to his demands. Johnny surrenders his money, wallet, credit cards, a watch that his grandfather gave him, and even his car keys so that the girl would be safe (in the music video, the crook's seen running away with only the wallet). Verse three takes place five years after the second verse. At this point, Johnny and the girl are now (presumably) married and expecting their first child, and the girl is eventually rushed to the hospital to have her baby delivered. The baby, a boy, is safely delivered, but the doctor informs Johnny that his wife is "fading fast" (presumably dying from childbirth complications). Johnny then collapses to his knees and prays to God that his wife survives, even asking that his own life be taken instead of his wife's, as long as she's okay. The music video shows that Johnny's wife does indeed survive as she is seen in the last scene running to meet Johnny and his little boy with a picnic basket. The song ends with a repeat of the song's opening line: "Johnny's daddy was taking him fishin' when he was eight years old".

ispumpkinking Opinions vary... however, just watch the video and you will see her at the end. As per Wikipedia.... The music video shows that Johnny's wife does indeed survive as she is seen in the last scene running to meet Johnny and his little boy with a picnic basket. The song ends with a repeat of the song's opening line: "Johnny's daddy was taking him fishin' when he was eight years old".

That sounds like a marvelous country lyric itself...and back in the day (the songwriters in Nashville all knowing each other) there was actually something of a tradition of songs having sequels...so this new lyric could, in a classic mode, reference "Don't Take The Girl"...And your pizza delivery person WOULD have to be a girl! Great anecdote.

One of my all time favorite country songs. It catches everyone off guard the first time and i still get goosebumps everytime i hear it. That being said, most people (including myself) dont realize that Tim is NOT just repeating the opening lines at the end of the song. It's actually Johnny and his girl (she survived) taking the new little Johnny fishing. You can even see the girl/mom run up to them at the end.

During that one minute she was watching the Dr’s work frantically to save her life. During this time She was given a choice... to stay and be with God or to go back and raise her 7 children... all under the age of 9. She came back and raised us... always smiling, always grateful, always knowing she made a choice and the choice was made possible by the grace of her (our) Savior... Country music will make you feel. And get you in touch with emotions that other music skims over, and artificially avoids inherently. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. In this case emotionally, over time. Note...no one is ever going to look down on you for crying. Because we are doing it with you, on the other side of the screen. And admiring your strength for being on the public side of that screen. Manly tears are a sign of strength. Especially in the country music world. But every man has his own limits to how much he will let the world into his inner world. You have more strength than I do, I think, and I grew up with this music. I just wanted you to know that.

This song has different meaning to me. I was pregnant and the father left once he found out. I was 16 when I got pregnant. But I was 17 when I had her. I had some complications before hand. My cuz was killed in a motorcycle wreck. Well I am the youngest and the only girl and so I was a daddies girl. Well the day I had my daughter my parents were at the funeral for my cuz. Well they just put him in the ground and that's around the time they decided to do an emergency C-section. So when they went to put an epidural in my back the messed up and caused my heart to stop. This song was on the radio when my dad got the call that they needed his signature for the emergency C-section because his daughters heart stopped. Well I survived everything else that happened kinda obvious. But my dad sang that last part. My dad passed away at the age of 63 and that was 3 years ago. I miss him so much.

@Monica Linck. Oh wow! That must have been a hard phone call to hear, especially just moments after a Funeral. I'm glad everything turned out ok. Epidurals sound like a good thing at 1st, but there are so many complications that come with them. I had 2 Epidurals during both of my Pregnancies (before I knew the Risks involved with it). Doctors warn you not to jump or you can become paralyzed from it (but they never say that there are long term effects that can show up later in life). Know how hard it is not to jump from something like that? Needless to say, my back is constantly in pain now. On top of a back injury that I had from when I was younger. Both combined, makes it hard to stand for long periods of time now, and constantly having spasms that shoot down my spine. I've had my back give out on me a few times if I push myself too hard, and collapse on the floor in pain.
