Witherspoon is one of the most under-showcased, under-appreciated HW's of the 80's and 90's. Part of that was thanks to Don King. Witherspoon and Bert Cooper are my two sentimental favourites of this era of HW boxing.

Limited though he was Frank Bruno ducked no one. Lewis, Witherspoon, McCall, Tyson, Bonecrusher Smith..the guy got in the ring with the best. He never let defeat hold him back and boxed on until he achieved his dream. Well done Frank and I hope you realise how much you actually achieved in your career. An absolute top man and true professional.

@flyingjibberish Nah, it's to do with the fact that Bruno was far less threatening to the masses in ALL of England. If he displayed any hint of his Jamaican heritage, he wouldn't be where he was. @@solidcake3401 Its division not diversion and Witherspoon was more than a 'gatekeeper'. Managed properly and without the influence of Don King he had all the potential to be an ATG. Certainly in shape he would have given Tyson in the 80's a decent argument. Bruno was a decent boxer with a good punch but didn't have the combination of attributes needed to defeat the best in the division, so I tend to agree with you on your assessment that he was an European Level boxer and hyped up as the next George Foreman by the British press.

Because he also wasn't always 100% focused in training, that's why he lost to BUSTER DOUGLAS, and didn't look so good against TONY TUCKER. From Drug Abuse and slacking in the GYM is why TYSON had a few Down Falls in the ring . And then 3 Years of Prison not being allowed to train is what did him in for the 90s, is why he was never truly 100% PRIME again, and went on to lose to HOLYFIELD and LEWIS, who he would've beat in his Prime of 1988

I met Tim about 7 years ago. Was very surreal. Basically I live in Surbiton in England and was walking down the high street and saw a big guy in a WBC tracksuit running towards me. It was about 20 seconds after he passed me that i realised it was Tim Witherspoon. Same thing happened a few days later except this time I managed to stop him and say hello. Really nice respectful guy. He went on to say he was staying with a friend who lived above the Sauce Kettle (a small bar in Surbiton). I saw him around a few more times and we got talking about Don King and how he got ripped off by him and also the Frank Bruno fight. He was really complimentary about Frank. His exact words were that if they had had each other’s managers then Frank would have beaten him. The problem with Tim though is that once he starts talking he doesn’t stop lol. A really nice guy. Although frank Bruno was stiff and robotic, he was a big puncher. His chin was pretty decent as he was only knocked out badly against Bonecrusher smith. All other stoppages, he was stopped on his feet. Stamina was his biggest problem, too muscle-bound. A lot of people say that he was a limited fighter who can only box long range with the jab and throw 1-2, but in this fight, he proved that he can throw hooks, overhand and uppercuts, combinations and body punching on the inside. Weakness was that he had no defense, counterpunch, head movement and footwork. Nevertheless, he still became a world champion.

Frank was strapping lad with a good chin, right cross and big heart... But that was it really. His almost total lack of talent resulted in an awkward and predictable boxing style and despite an impressive physique he tended to fade in the later rounds. This meant that he was able to knock over most of the heavyweight riff raff of his day but lost whenever he faced anyone with whiff of class. Having said all that, the Heavyweight division of the 80s and 90s would not have been the same without him.

Tim was a very underestimated fighter who didn't get the fights he wanted due to politics and him not being Don King's bitch. Great show by Frank too, though. Thanks for the upload :o)

thats his fault, if he wouldve beat BONECRUSHER in the rematch for the WBA Title then he wouldve had all the POWER, but he lost & was destroyed, which put him back to the bottom of the barrell. Matter of fact he also lost to LARRY HOLMES & PINKLON THOMAS as well, so he did have opportunities, unfortunately he simply LOST some of his big fights ...

Poor Frank, such a great guy. If only his skill set matched his physique. Still, it was nice to see him try real hard before finally getting inevitably pulverized. I'll never forget Tyson doing the right to the body, uppercut to Franks head followed by a left hook to finish frank off on the ropes. He did manage to budge Mike once though. So there is that.

Tim was an incredible counter puncher . I like both of these fighters but I can't help but wonder why Big Frank got away with holding and hitting so much . It was almost his trademark .
@hyena131
@hyena131 4 жыл бұрын
Mr Wdpkr You're right. And it seems the reason Bruno held and hit so much is because he wasn't good enough to box/stand and trade with higher class opponents like Withersooon, Bonecrusher and Tyson, who he simply couldn't knock out like he did with the forgotten tomato cans he primarily fought. And he probably got away with it due to this fight being on home soil. No nonsense referee Mills Lane didn't stand for it during Bruno's 2nd crushing defeat at the hands of Tyson.

To say that some people used to consider Bruno to be a bit of a joke fighter with limited skills and a glass jaw, I’m pretty sure we just watched him stand a trade with a big puncher with very fast hands , more than AJ has done in his entire career

I wonder why people claim "BRUNO HAD A GLASS JAW" !!???............. He actually had a very Tough Chin & a Hard Head. TYSON, LEWIS, BONECRUSHER & WITHERSPOON had to throw a ton of their full leverage BOMBS to finally stop him. And BRUNO beat the tough hard punchin OLIVER McCALL
