@@TimBatSea If time permits, could you try to get more external shots of the tugs and barges you are operating so we can get a better idea what they look like to other passing boats? for example, is the barge black on the outside? making unlit parts disappear at night? You have that one overhead shot of your regular tug with no barge, but isn't this a different one? and overhead is also not how other boats see you.

Dramatic passage in the fog. Like an aviator, one needs good eyes to do your job. Thanks for posting this. It helps explain the reason for the demolition delays, difficult to place those charges in a fog. (In the captions in the preview window you are quoted "I'm Tim B at C.")

I came amazingly close in front of a black barge at night once, before seeing it in my skiff, before realizing that the green light off in one direction and the red light off in another were connected by black barge, just South of Jacksonville. I wish they were a brighter color. I'm glad I was fast enough to get out of it's way once I finally saw it. The skiff was Aluminum, so it might have reflected radar, but the barge was stuck in the narrow channel.

Reminds me of the time I was at Jones Island, WA and got called back to Anacortes. I had a McJob at West Marine. Viability was 100' at best, I had a first generation hand held gps and a paper chart. When I broke out of the fog 5 miles later, there were 3 Sunday boaters in huge yachts with radar, chart plotters etc. following me!

The thing you said at the beginning said it all. Not only you, but your company, both are smart enough to know the dangers. What happened to the electrical systems of the DALI at the port should have been enough of a warning for the captain/company to have the DALI stay put and not leave the port.

Having an extra set of "good" eyes is real helpful in the fog. I spent the night anchored at Fishers Island (Just south of New London CT), summer of 1996. Woke up to heavy fog and no wind. We motored out of the harbor and around the west end of the island headed back to Long Island. After we lost sight of land, I was in the bow with my brother at the tiller. I could hear what I assume was a buoy bell or maybe Race Rock lighthouse that made a circle around me... my brother was driving us in circles. I had to give him a quick course in wave direction and how to read the compass that was right in front of him. No radar, chart plotter or GPS, but I did have a radar target up the mast a ways so commercial guys like you would see a little 25' sailboat in those conditions.

More eyes with the fog is essential. I used to work on a high speed ferry in the northeast. Foggy days up in the wheel house were usually: Captain on the throttles with the chart plotter and radar, mate on the 2nd radar looking for small targets, deckhand steering, and usually a second deckhand on watch. Oh yeah, and a whole bunch of security calls. Great video and be safe!

Hey Cap'n! It still amazes me how quick that boat gathers pace with any kind of barge. My ship has only 610 metric tonnes load capacity and a fairly heafty Deutz V12 twin turbo, 660 hp (520 hp @ the prop). Even though my ship has probably a better HP to tonnage ratio then the combo's you're working, it doesn't gather pace like that. Honestly, i'd love to have a go on one of those tugs...😅

Tim, FYI The cutting crew were cutting predetermined notches in the bridge structure sitting on the Dali. These are for the shaped charges that will (when fired) cut thru the metal like a hot knife thru butter, causing the bridge structure to fall away from the Dali. There will be minimal beams left on the bow to get rid of after that. They also have placed additional anchor lines on it to keep it (Dali) in place after the weight of the bridge structure is gone after the demo operation.

Thank you for watching. I am not sure, but the Dali wasn't a really big ship as ships go these days. I suspect that the river isn't as much a limiting factor as the infrastructure along the river is. (Container cranes need to be able to reach the other side of the ships. CUOTO

👍✅ Another thing I have been meaning to comment, Tim you need to be careful with all those safety calls, explanations to your crew as to why you are doing things and always advising your assist/safety tug as to your plan. If you keep this up some people may start to believe that you are a true gentleman😂😂

Shouldn’t you have posted your lookout on the bow of the barge? That would give him the ability to spot danger sooner than watching from further aft? Also, wouldn’t his vantage point lower to the water give him a better view through the fog? Never mind, you just sent someone up there, lol.

Interesting that the canal closes in the fog. You would think with radar markers on the sides it would need to be very very bad to stop traffic. Is the canal either open or closed, or is there a visibility range where it’s open one way at a time?
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. Those are not radar markers on the side. Any radar can easily paint the canal edges. I mean, the markers do show up on radar, but that wasn't the purpose of them being installed. CUOTO

Thank you very much for watching Jason. That is caused by cavitation. Below has a much different sound that is coming through the water and the hull. We are 70 feet up in the upper wheel house and a rumble in the lower house can be a violent thing at the top. CUOTO

@TimBatSea

Thank you for watching Richard. Quick water, or what some might call "prop wash" is the water being pushed out the back of another vessel. There are some tugs (see NYC videos) where the quick water can spin us around. CUOTO

Hi Tim. I have been thinking about this for awhile now. My son is at GLMA working on getting his unlimited 3 mate with Great Lakes Pilotage. There are a lot of cadet in his school from the Gulf and Mississippi river area. Most choose this school because they graduate with 1st class pilot which the towing companies like and i am told its easier to add new rivers and harbors than to start green. Anyway, the school does not really do a lot for towing. They do have a tug but i think that it is used mostly for general handling training. Anyways, would you be open to setting up a live stream in the fall when the cadets are back in class? I can ask my son propose to their Prop Club or something..
