I set up a hoist system to lift heavy timbers onto the top of the log walls on my off grid workshop, use hand tools to shape timbers for the roof, and tan deer hides by the fire in the Canadian wilderness.

Gotta love that dog. I can recommend investing in a tennis set (a racket and half a dozen balls). My dog loved going after a ball sent over the treetops, he could spend a lot of time searching for one of those furry tennis balls.

Those trees were all planted not to long ago. He talks about it. And he BOUGHT them and surely also plants some on his property. Don't think you like people telling you what to do with your possessions. Further I guess you are not aware of how many goods you use made out of often illegally cut trees in other countries, starting from (news-) paper, magazines, napkins, paper towels, toilet paper, pre-cut fireplace wood, also charcoal for BBQ, BBQ-piicks, toothpicks, furniture (assume you have some) and of course mainly buildings (floors, kitchens, main parts.of roofs etc.).

The smell of wood chips is the best & designing & making a birdhouse or two was my fun project challange for my time there.. Love camping anyway it comes ..but Shawn has taken everything to a dreamy level of self sufficiency...Loving it all. Calie is the best ..My grand father had a dog just like her called " Bouncer" when she died he would go get another just like her name her Bounce #2 & #3 etc..Best dogs ever. lol we never really knew for sure as we only visited on holidays & summers from another state..lol

I am in awe of your skills, and having watched you building your homestead for the past 3 years, sometimes I can figure out what you are going to do before you actually do it! @Ramadin Bawdiip No the dog doesn't 'knit the show together'. She's a sideshow act and Shawn is smart enough to see very vocal dog lovers on this channel so he puts the dog at the forefront. But that crowd does not represent all the viewers. I and many others don't care for it.

What a great way to spend a Sabbath evening. Watching this video couldn’t be any more peaceful and relaxing. I am curious what you intend on using the hides for once tanned. I Can’t wait to see the finished workshop. My dad was a cabinetmaker by trade in his younger years. Watching your workmanship takes me back to when I was a kid, watching him build. I just assumed that every man was a carpenter, so when I married my husband, I was pretty surprised that he barely knew one end of a hammer from the other. My dad took him under his wing and taught him everything he knew and before my dad died, he told me that my husband went far beyond any skills that he ever had, when it came to carpentry. To me, a man who can create using his skills like this, deserves a lot of admiration in my book. Well done, Shawn. ~Linda Wolff

My dad built a log workshop out of old telephone poles in 1988. I was 16 and got volunteered into helping. A chainsaw, a Ford 4wd with winch, alot of blood, sweat and beers later it was finished. I thought it was hard work and well built. Then I saw this and realized we built a shed out of scrap, the easy way.

@@americasdream1265 Goldens and labs have been bred for much the same work, retriving birds in water. The main differences is that the lab is from Canada and was bred mainly from what newfoundlanders used to be, while Goldens are from the UK and was bred using many different breeds like spaniels and setters. Loving water is a normal and expected trait of both breeds, especially if they're field bred. 😊 Edit because it's a fun fact: the dogs newfies used to be is suspected to be a mix between.. You guessed it, setters and spaniels 😂 (and a few more breeds that no longer exist)

Shawn , I had to stop what I was doing and come to my computer to share this epiphany with you . KZfaq runs auto play and I run the audio through my stereo when I am working in the house or shop . A lot of the channels are music , but also You and Acorn to Arabella , Sampson Boat Co. , The Outsider ... I have found that when your videos are playing , I am so much more at ease , even more so than the slow jazz or blues I normally enjoy . I have come to know the rhythm of your hatchet , hammer and draw knife at work . When this video started I thought " Wow , Shawn is here , cool " I wanted to bring you a cup of coffee and say hey . Sometimes I just loop you on a long project , no voices , no music , only the purity of creation , not visible except through the mind's eye . Thanks brother . I fear there are too few like us left . Your sound tracks would sell , at least to me ...... LOL
