If I were to guess I'd say the difference will be negligible. That's why no one is doing the timber frame.

Those timber’s are very oversized so that would have bumped up the cost. We find about 20% less on cost compared to “traditional” due to labor. Once footing and block up to damp. Can have you weather tight finished and screed in 5 - 7 days. I am sure you will have plenty of builders on here say I can throw up a traditional and have you up in 6days. I’ve heard this hundreds of time and yet to see it! That’s not a dig, I really need someone who can actually do this as I need a reliable bricky who can brick skin my timber extensions in a timely manner.

@@LauGar69 thanks for the info mate. Assuming the oversized timbers aren’t to meet insulation standards? Nice to know the timbers are decent in the absence of a brick skin. Do you mostly build entirely timber without a brick skin? I like the brick / block footings also.

I'm doing a self build annex right now and next job is cutting in cavity trays. I've already bought the trays but I might ask if I can use Stormdry just to save time and effort. The effected area of my existing house is smaller than in this video.

This was a strange one because we had a time lapse camera on it while I went away to the Seychells but the timelapse went on strike so we got nothing of that stage. Talking about something with no pictures is a turn off for KZfaq viewers. Hopefully we will do better with future projects. I kick myself when we fail so I know how it feels.

Typically the timber frame is load bearing but the external block/stone is just cladding. Certainly more complicated to extend timber frame....the frame itself is computer designed to be as efficient as possible so it has little capacity to take increased loads from say an increased opening width, also the timber frame is expected to shrink over time so allowances are made for this in how the inner frame and outer skin are tied together and how windows and other openings are created. Get good professional advice.

They are called Stark and have a zip up the side so you don't need to undo the laces. They are great for nipping in and out of customer's houses.

Just paint it on the walls, it is used for floors, walls and roofs.

The walls have pu board and so does the roof. The studs are faced over with 25mm on the inside but the deeper the studs the less warmth escapes to cold. Dry wood is not that conductive.

It's a good job. Not trying at pull the job down, just see this a lot with composite type cladding and especially decking. I osb the external first that might be wrong too but have had good results

It is all about the insulation, the same goes for the roof joists. The only reason the timber is that deep is to acommodate the insulation. Crazy world

@@SkillBuilder I put one 70mm layer of insulation between the studs then a second full envelope of 62.5mm insulated plasterboard inside. My warm roof is 150mm and the floors are 70mm. You were probably right to spend on giant studs to save on insulation costs.

The size of the timbers is simply because the walls now require so much insulation.

Maybe a crazy idea but how about 4x2 timber with osb sheet outside, 90mm pir between the studs and 60mm pir layed over the internal studs to stop cold bridge. Same as a loft dormer under the new regs, maybe im missing a trick

You might be right but Deiter Helm, who is a climate change guru says that we are tinkering and all these marginal gains are a distraction. Heat pumps will have such a small affect on climate change that they could be seen as a sop, something to keep people believing that something is being done. The reality is the opposite. The U.K congratualates itself on having exceeded its carbon reduction targets but the reality is that we have outsourced all the inustries that produces carbon and we just import the goods. If you leave out things like that you are perpetrating a deceit.

@@SkillBuilder I try and eliminate the environmental aspect and politics from it sometimes to try and make sense of it. But if you look at Australia,solar and wind is displacing coal in a country where coal is cheaply available. It's becoming cheaper to electrify using renewables and they will predominate in due course. So with that supply, you have the opportunity imo to then switch things like cars/mobility, and heating over to electric. Massive opportunity therefore for Britain to build big offshore wind infrastructure, put it in a position to produce excess electricity from renewables and therefore save ourselves a bill for Oil and Gas. It may seem impossible now but you can see the figures from Australia and there are times when states are running completely on renewables...that's happening already and that's before there's been a concerted effort to switch things. The cheapness of renewables is ensuring a new world is emerging. I think there's an opportunity there and I think Britain needs to be ready for it. Britain never did well by sticking it's head in the sand...it used to build things and this can be a big part of making us self sufficient in future. For all the doom and gloom in the world,I believe this is an exciting opportunity that is coming along inevitably...why not go after it?

The cladding is installed over a ventilated and drained cavity, therefore there shouldn’t ever be any moisture locked between the cladding and the timber frame.
