Timber Biscuit Woodworks

Күн бұрын

In today’s video, I'll show you how to build a modern kitchen island. I made this kitchen island to fit comfortably in the center of the kitchen and to maximize counter space. The table is built from walnut hardwood and uses traditional mortise and tenon joinery along with other traditional joinery techniques. I added two large drawers and a slatted lower shelf to take advantage of its footprint and include easily accessible extra storage. The simple modern design makes an excellent centerpiece for any kitchen upgrade.

Stopped mortise dado tenon...? Who knows. One of my favorite sayings is, if it's stupid but it works then it's not stupid. Great execution - that's solid and top-notch. I think the only suggestion I could possibly make is to soak the feet end grain with epoxy to prevent any spilled water (busted pipe, inattentive kids, etc.) from soaking up into the island. Just a thought, and picky, but I build my stuff to survive the zombie apocalypse.

the finished piece is beautiful, but IMO your design does not allow for wood movement, and the cross grain situations will tear itself apart after a couple seasons.
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks 9 ай бұрын
I’ve shared this in another comment but here’s the gist for the for the expansion issue you’re describing. The alignment of the radial and longitudinal grain in the mortise was chosen to balance aesthetics, strength, and wood movement. While alternatives like double stub tenons or figure 8 fasteners could be used, this design aligns with my vision for the piece and takes into consideration the expansion and contraction of the wood. So while I do understand your concern there is space for wood movement built into the joinery and that was heavily considered during the design process.
