The best country music artist meets the best acoustic guitar player. Cannonball Rag from Nashville, Tennessee, 6/16/07. This performance opened my ears to Tommy Emmanuel. Thank you Mr. Paisley!

@darthfrylock To be fair, Cannonball Rag is a staple of Tommy's set, style, and practice regimen. Brad probably worked the song up just for this occasion to have the honor playing with Tommy and to showcase his incredible talents. Paisley's albums and concerts are loaded with tasty groovy licks.

timbowabo absolutely. Paisley is as fine a telecaster player as anyone out there and he is probably better than most
@skipacuff51045 жыл бұрын
James Ryan Agree 100%. Paisley has a huge repertoire of nifty tricks he invented plus a gift for melody and timing few can match. His solos on that Telecaster can go to otherworldly planes far beyond the country genre. He even does this in his Christmas music. I rate Brad as the “Nashville cats’” counterpart to Jeff Beck. Here’s a track in which Brad is responding to famous rock riff challenges from a DJ. Eventually Brad quits fucking around and dives into Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher”. He’ s got some chops!
@johnmoyle41954 жыл бұрын
No. Tommy Emmanuel is a far better player, even on the Telecaster. In fact, he was barely known here in Australia until he quit The Bushwhackers in the 1980s and went solo on Telecaster. In the late 1990s he went back to acoustic almost exclusively and then buggered off to America because all our great music venues were booked up with DJs and most Australians fell in love with American “R&B” bullshit. Thanks Yanks. Tommy Emmanuel is far more experienced, faster and more refined as a musician and composer - his music actually has something to say other than “ever-body lookit me!”

I don't know why there are always so many haters commenting on everything. The truth is: Tommy Emmanuel is a fine human being. He has a heart filled with love, and it comes out in his playing. Nowhere will you find ANYONE who has met him saying an unkind word. Never. As a big surprise to me (where have I been?), Brad Paisley did a damn fine job on guitar! He was not intimidated, or didn't show it. And his playing was just great.

Dear Mr. Walis, I appreciate your respect for all the other unnamed wonderful guitarists. I really do. That is why I NEVER say someone is the "best" at anything. I prefer to think of it as they are all great at something. Frankly, I disagree with the comparisons (who is "better") of guitarists! If I love the way someone plays, I try to just appreciate him or her, without all that comparing.

As I browse through KZfaq watching Tommy's videos there are two things which always reach out and touch me. The first is the utter joy Tommy shows when he plays. The second is that while Tommy has the talent to play circles around just about anyone, when he shares the stage with another player, he plays with them, often taking the "secondary" role and letting them take the staring role. I have yet to see Tommy live in concert struck with how much a gentleman he seems to be.
@dannymay34333 жыл бұрын
Tommy spent many years in the 'secondary' role with his brother Phil Emmanuel R.I.P. (search for videos of the two together...it's electrfyiing). Phil was every bit the player Tommy is but was more of a lead guitarist so that's how they played together, Tommy on rhythm, Phil on lead. Phil used to intrduce Tommy as the best rhythm guitarist in the world....and he wasn't kidding.

This is a world class display of musicianship from both Brad and Tommy. Simply incredible. It's cool to see Brad challenged because 90% of the time he is the best guitar player on any stage he is on. You can tell he is pushing himself here to keep up with Tommy. What impresses me is how he manages to play Cannonball Rag with a flat pick, which is something even Travis didn't do. That is extremely difficult. Such a cool video!
@guibox37 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that Brad 'chicken picks' with his other fingers. Tommy does the same. When they need to really flatpick, they use their thumbpick as a regular pick and alternate back and forth between their fingers and the solo pick.

I would say that I can't believe there would be any negative comments on two musicians as great as these guys but this world has proven there always will be. People wonder why music isn't what it once was, but it has never been subject to so much "know it all" criticism before. The real life of a Professional Musician is nothing like American Idol, The Voice or {fill in the blank} Has Talent. Musicians who have been around long enough to "get over themselves" awake to find themselves part of a brotherhood. Something I think many of the commenters here will never know.

If you still want to debate that.. go look up facebook likes or itunes downloads for both of them and then come back and tell me who's more famous. Tommy and Brad are both famous all over the world not doubt. Brad plays sold out arenas in large cities. Tommy plays a lot of smaller venues in even more cities. Either way.. if you ask someone on the street if they know who Brad Paisley is vs Tommy Emmanuel.. I think we all know what they outcome would be 9 times out of 10. Tommy is a hero to a ton of guitarists including myself.. but so is Brad. If you fail to understand that both are great for various reasons, then I feel bad for you.

Cannonball Rag is obviously an amazing solo piece, but I think it sounds even better when played in a duet. The harmonizing licks at blazing speeds is just absolutely beautiful. Brad and Tommy do it incredibly well, and you can see just how much the are enjoying the opportunity to do it together on country's biggest stage. Great video. I'd love to see them trade licks on a couple of Tele's.
