I had never heard of a blackwater tank until this series. I have a large (270 gallon) that I built for my red eared slider. I am following this build because I might make her home a blackwater tank. Thanks for the video series, ur entertaining as much as informative!

This will all look wonderful when done. I love botanicals and keep pods, leaf litter, and cholla wood in my tanks. You should consider Buce too for its beautiful when mixed up with anubias plants.

I'm setting up a discus tank as we speak too so watching this in anticipation. I had a "rooty" style hardscape but took it out after 24 hours. It seemed to take up too much of the fishes swimming space and I was concerned the fish were going to harm themselves when trying to get into the nooks and crannies for food washed in there. That scape looks amazing though and I can already see it covered in a bright green flame moss . Cant wait for part 5

Thomas, I really enjoy your videos. I would go with much bigger pieces of wood for that size tank. The wood you wanted is always worth waiting for if you really had a vision for the aquascape buddy. I am a Sand/Holley Rock man that recently starting adding plants, both emersed and immersed. I may spend weeks looking for a piece of rock I envision will really have visual impact while still serving the need of the fish (African Cichlids and their fry). However I take great pleasure in watching other enthusiast creating "their" masterpiece. Such an awesome hobby! PS: you can glue some rock to your wood to hold it down. You can also utilize your center brace for some hanging wood and plants from back to front. Enjoy the ride!

I'm loving the scape and the tannin idea. You can probably get away with an anubias here and there in between the branches.

Looking forward to this video and part 5! Love the series! Edit: Discus LOVE sand, cleaning it won't be THAT much of a problem if you've got nice flow in the tank as the discus will just blow into the sand to search for food. And obviously, corydoras love it... How come you don't go for a deep sand bed? Lots of anaerobic filtration and you don't need to siphon since it'll keep itself kinda clean

Are discus not prone to damaging themselves on sharp edges? Just saying because those bits of wood could have a few sharp edges on the branch ends l. Gotta look after them fish. Also I have a bunch of Sterbais in one of my aquarium and the kilt tale devils dig everything up so good plan on no plants in the sand!!! 😂 looking forward to ep5!

In my experience you don't have to worry about that as much with spider wood, it's a lot more rounded and softer than say Malaysian driftwood. I'm sure he sanded down any edges that needed it beforehand though.

I’m sure you’re right. I’ve not had the pleasure of keeping discus as I’m far too new to the hobby atm so it wouldn’t be fair to the fish for me to keep them. Just trying to learn so thanks for your response ☺️

I agree. Small pointy branches are harmful for fish like discus. They get fairly big and will not be able the travel amongst those branches and openings. Big pieces of wood hi light them better IMO. I still want to see the final set up with fish.

Miguel E Espinosa plus that wood doesn’t release beneficial tannings for the fish. Hope it does not become later a disaster discus video.
