Awesome, I can't wait to see the finished product! When you go to plant the tank, and your discus are inevitably being kept anywhere from 82-86 degrees, I would highlight how some plants really don't like that warm of water, but there are lists of plants that are good for discus tanks that can do well with that hot of water.

Great video bud. I have always run long tanks with the flow going in one direction. It helps prevent dead spots. I place inlet pipes from the filter at one end and outlets at the opposite end. It also gives a nice flow and gives fish something to swim against. The flow isn’t huge but it is consistent and better for fish. I’m looking forward to the next video.

Buy the Eheim pre-filter for the Classic series. It fits on the end of the inflow pipe inside the aquarium. I have two on my two Eheim Classic 600 and they work a treat and take minutes to clean and I don't have to touch the cannister for months. The pre-filter will work on any inflow pipe 16/22mm. Dunno what that is in old money.
@mrsunmaid
@mrsunmaid 5 жыл бұрын
Nice vid, I was first introduced to this filter by your video on its installation a few years ago. I Love the Eheim 600 pro 4 canisters. Everybody seems to love the FX4 and 6 though. I think you forgot to show installing the grey clamp on the in and out tubes at the canister. I know that you have to raise the temp about 18 degrees F. This might sound a bit against conventional wisdom, but my experience with a similar big oscar tank is that you might find that ONE 300W heater might do the trick. Your tank is well covered, that makes a big difference. The heater might stay on just about all the time, but that is a good thing for two reasons. The most common reason heaters fail is that the on/off mechanism gets stuck because of going on and off too often! Also with one heater staying on almost all the time to do the job you don't have to worry about the heater getting stuck in the on position and cooking your discus. This is the most common way a heater fails and if you have several of them in the tank of course this risk increases.

I was actually thinking about roller Matt filters, k1 micro fluidized in a sump with a drip system. But I personally dread canister filters. But my secret weapon in my area is our local water has no measurable elements and low PH. Actually to the point it is perfect for wild discus straight out of the ground.

I must admit that I love Eheim filters, but I definitely would have chosen the pro3 series filters. I had the electronic model on a 80g and it was great. But with this size tank I would have gone with 2 of the biggest model with the dual intake (2080?). Great bio and super balanced flow. I am not a fan of water changes beyond 25% because matching the water parameters can get tricky especially with sensitive fish, as discus are repped to be. I will follow you closely buddy on this one. Just for reference, I run two FX6s on a 120g African cichlid tank, stable and pristine. PS...there is no way I would take more than a week setting any tank I owned...just can't...lol.

I'm surprised that there isn't too big of a market in adapting the Reptile Heating mats for Aquarium hobby. Albeit it wouldn't make sense on this big of a tank. Smaller tanks it would work great. For large tanks like this, one would have to make a custom mat and simply throw in a traditional Floor heating cable. I reckon that is better in Power Consumption and looks. Since it will heat the tank evenly from the ground. So one doesn't have to worry about the water being unevenly heated with X cold spots.

What? A canister? No way! My 200 went from a FX4 immediately to a FX6, then within a week I could tell I didn’t like the performance of the 6 on that much water, so I went with a lifereef wetdry, then added a second sump that connected via pipe, to tumble fluidized k2 media. Then I didn’t like all the pipe and leak possibilities, do I made my own sump that is wet dry on one side and FBF on the other, on overflow runs the wet dry and one runs the FBF but they live in the same sump and dump into the same return. My water is like SUPER-UBER-ULTRA processed! My fish have to be in the cleanest aquarium water in Michigan for sure! EDIT: The FX6 runs for 20 mins, 8 times a day, and has all floss and sponges in it. I keep it because I added quick connects to connect a hose to the drain of the FX6 and the sink. It’s main purpose is water change hose connections. Getting ready to make a video of the latest setup. Hope you’ll come check it out when it’s done!

I think there's more to consider regarding the fine mechanical filter media. It's more than just clear water. If you don't filter out the fine particles, the bio media may get clogged up. And as such, all mechanical filtration should occur before biological filtration. Food for thought.

Ehhh def not the filter I would’ve picked for this type of setup. Great choice for heavy planted tanks needing little maintenance and filtration. If I were to go ehim I’d opted for the older classic design as they can act like a small sump when setup right. Personally I think today I’d have opted for the newer sunsuns and used the spray bars across the entire back of the tank pointed forward to help both reduce flow rate for discus as well as better water turnover inside the tank itself since it’s so tall and deep. Substrate pro sucks btw... it clogs so easy and breaks down very fast. I’d have opted for matrix again. I like the biotech.. I use it on the bottom of all my canisters to help collect crap before going through the filter.. it breaks down too but no where near as fast as the substrate pro does.. I get a solid 2 years out of the mech but substrate is either clogged junk or worn down pieces of sand within 6-8months

Honestly, discus are not as hard as a lot of people stress them out to be. Generations of breeding discus in different water fluctuations have made discus harder then ever. Does this mean they are a simple fish to care for? No, they are not your beginner fish, but they are not as hardy as African cichlids either. They do, in my experience get sick often and if not cared for they are doom. Again this is for the domestic discus not the wild ones. It does take some experience to have discus but a large water change daily or every other day is unneeded honestly. I use to only buy discus the size of a dime to a quarter cause they were cheaper. This has its pros and cons. Cheaper, smaller fish, gotta care for them more, fish got stress easier, you got to watch your hard labor pay off etc.
