Very good and wise decision their BP never second-guess that safety is Paramount and get there itis takes a backseat to that in my book always. Always nice to see p1d on here in commenting shout out to p1d, hope to see you and meet you this year in Oshkosh Greg.

Good decision to land to develop a Plan B from the safety of the FBO. I thought your controller did an outstanding job describing what she saw on her screen. A full case of Get-There-Itis would have had you air file an IFR flight on a northerly heading. It probably would have worked out OK, but the pucker factor could have been high. My uncle who taught me used to say "the sun is always shining at the funeral of a pilot."

Great job of piloting! I made the wrong choice during a trip from JAX to the Atlanta area and just made it though a hole in the weather. Unfortunately that gave me the confidence to try to pick my way through some weather that closed in on me. It could have ended very badly. Never again. This is a great video because "get there itis" is a very real thing.

Lits of great info in this video! Answered a lot of questions for non pilot types like myself about engines. Since you're paying for new engines, I would of thought they would take a brand new one right off the shelf! I would hope so anyway. You mentioned doing a booth at Sun n Fun with Corporate Pilot Life and a few others, I was lucky enough to get to meet Shaun and Guss of CPL just last week when they flew into PDX for the afternoon and I had a fantastic time with them! Very fun to hang with and truly gracious and wonderful people! It was my lucky day and I truly enjoyed my time with them! I enjoyed your video! Congrats on your new engines, I cant wait to see how you like them.

Good talk, Very valid points made. Our old Seneca we had a shop rebuild. It was cheaper ( not by much in the end), but by the time we got them, it might have been better to go new. However the plane was basically sold and the Navajo was ready about the same time so it worked out and if we had kept the plane, we probably would have just gone new. Though we also didn't know the rebuild was going to be such a long time either.

When you hang around pilots as long as I have eventually something happens. A good friend of mine was killed trying to get to a home owner's association meeting. He was a VFR pilot who flew into IMC. My immediate thought when I got the call was, this was not a day for a VFR pilot. I love to fly as much as anyone. However, I never hesitate to cancel a flight if things aren't right, especially weather.

Love the new camera angle! Nice view of a nice airplane! I also found it interesting that even instrument rated pilots divert sometimes instead of simply picking up an IFR clearance and plowing ahead. I've known that getting an instrument ticket only means you can go SOMETIMES when it's not VMC, but not always! Keep up the good work. Congratulations on getting new engines. That's exciting.

Wise choice there! I'm the most impatient person on the planet (born and raised in MA, so that's not a shock, lol), so I can completely understand get-there-itis. I get it driving! Definitely have to change that mindset if I ever start flying, for sure. Those storms sounded extremely unpredictable - good ones to land for and wait out. Kudos to ATC for emphasizing that fact, and to you for listening! True statement there - engines do talk to you, no question about it. Doesn't matter what the engine is in - they're all somewhat similar in that regard (with obvious differences between 2 & 4 strokes, and diesels of course). Been around them my whole life on the diagnosis and repair side of things. The speed at which everything moves inside always fascinated me, especially after you've held the parts in your hand prior to assembly. Sometimes things can happen without warning, like a broken crank, connecting rod, spun bearing, or broken piston skirt, but that is pretty rare these days. It's pretty amazing they last as long as they do given how fast everything moves, and how hot the parts can get. Good part about the aviation piston engines is, most spin at half the RPM to reach peak power - slower speeds = less stress, which = longer life. Being able to adjust the mixture plays a big part in that, too (knowing where it should be is critical) - wish we had that ability with autos and outdoor power equipment today, but government has taken that freedom away from us, unfortunately, which shortens the engines' life substantially. I could talk engines all day long ... but anyway, GREAT video as always - your production quality has gone WAY up since I first started watching you well over a year ago (closer to 2, I think). Can't wait to see & hear the new engines, and note the performance differences! Keep up the great work, Kris!👍 👍

Congratulations on the new engines. I really like the wing camera it shows why I’ve always thought the 55 series Baron was a lot prettier than the 58s. I also appreciated the chance to watch the process leading up to your decision to divert. Too often, I think, pilots misuse their instrument rating to facilitate bad decisions to press on. Navigating through IMC is one thing but attempting to penetrate a fast moving squall line and pick your way through severe storms is clearly something else.

Yep, make sure you know what ADs (esp older ones) are still in effect for your engine or engines on that used plane being considered for purchase. As an example new crankshafts can be $12k each, new camshafts at least 2.5 k each,, new fuel distributor 5k each. Advertised cost typically only includes expendables like bolts and bushings, cleaning, polishing, maybe sending parts out for consultation or minor refurbishment etc.

I don’t know if I’ll ever see it, but it would be great if someone can chronicle, not only their flying experiences, but also the costs of plane ownership. I guess the simple answer is If you are questioning it, you can’t afford it. Lol. I have a number of friends that tell me to just go ahead and pull the trigger on buying a plane. The easiest way to tell if your engines are getting clapped out is looking at the fresh hot idle oil pressure. When you see a significant drop you can almost be certain your bearing clearances are opening up. Obviously there are more invasive testing but that alone can tell you it's time to look harder.

Great video! I agree with always quoting engines from the manufacturer, but also familiarize yourself with other options. For example, in the Twin Cessna world, RAM engines are the gold standard. This was one of your best videos; excellent discussion and decision-making. Please bear in mind with the TCM rep ride-along that they have a vested interest in selling you engines and parts. The recommendations they have are for their benefit, not yours. I agree that FRM is usually a good deal, and that TCM may have given you some consideration to have this discussion, but they simply cannot be trusted to provide information counter to their business interests. New cam is fine, good for when it's bumpy, but pretty boring in smooth cruise.
