Terence Kemp McKenna (November 16, 1946 - April 3, 2000) was an American ethnobotanist, mystic, psychonaut, lecturer, author, and an advocate for the responsible use of naturally occurring psychedelic plants. He spoke and wrote about a variety of subjects, including psychedelic drugs, plant-based entheogens, shamanism, metaphysics, alchemy, language, philosophy, culture, technology, environmentalism, and the theoretical origins of human consciousness.
McKenna formulated a concept about the nature of time based on fractal patterns he claimed to have discovered in the I Ching, which he called novelty theory, proposing this predicted a transition of consciousness in the year 2012. His promotion of novelty theory and its connection to the Maya calendar is credited as one of the factors leading to the widespread beliefs about 2012 eschatology.

I do not disagree with McKenna's interview and idea, but I believe that this feeling of the time speeding up has something to do with us not being enough in the present, "in the now" moment. When we were kids, we were constantly in the present moment. Enjoying and being caught up with the moment's which life brought us every second, and thus the days seemed eternal. Now, as we are growing up, we are constantly waiting for something. Constantly looking into the future. Waiting for that Weekend, for that end of the month, for that salary, for that holiday, for that date etc etc... So we are caught up with this rushing, mentally always being in the future and we are loosing so many beautiful moments of which we are simply not aware. I truly believe, one of the secrets is to slow down, meditate, or do anything that will help you to ground yourself in the now and be aware of each moment and simply enjoy every single one of it. You will feel the time slowing down..

Be in the now then you'll realise there is no concept of time only our ego trying to give us the illusion of time. You'll start to realise that there has always been now in the past and the future

I so want to live in the now all the time. It's bliss in the moments I can achieve it. But modern society, at least in the U.S., makes it damn near impossible. From our earliest ages we're being trained to look toward the future, to live 100% to make the future better. Gotta go to school, gotta get a 4.5 GPA to get into a good college to make money for the rest of my life. Essentially making decisions specifically for your future self for better or worse, to benefit yourself in the future. From day one, soon as school begins. The entirety of modern life is built on living for the future.

I think it’s more about the amount of new input we get. Kids are new to the world and get stimulated by anything but older people already know how the world works so they arent as stimulated to input. Like how a computer slows down when there is too much info to process. You can also see this in psychedelics: time slows down as your brain makes new neural networks. Just like when you are in the ‘flow’ time speeds up because you ‘become one’ with the experience. That way, new input is processed quicker than normal.

Its mostly because time represents a larger fraction of your life when you're young, making it appear slower from the youthful illusion of immediacy. As you age, you get used to the passage of time, it loses its novelty. Summer break no longer feels like 6 months, waiting three days for something in the mail no longer seems like a lifetime away. as i said i call it the youthful illusion of immediacy.

I feel like time is just a tool used to understand movement trough space. And I think it's rather human history that appears to go faster because we know a lot about what's happening today, but we know less about history from 1000 years ago, and even less from millions of years ago. All we know from prehistoric times is based on objects or fossilized remains that have been found, and not on events that have been written down. This doesn't mean that only evolution happened, it is just the only thing we know for sure. Dinosaurus for example also lived their daily lives and probably had some conflicts, struggles and other events as well.

@@tobiaslagos two things. Number 1, i was referring to exponential increases when comparing two points in different space/times, that is when looking at it from within the viewpoint of a purely linear time flow. (Technically time doesn't have to be linear. But that's a whole other set of variables and scenarios.) 2., 'space' is actually a variable that holds several variables inside it, and probably aren't fixed variables to boot as relativity would be involved. Relativistic distances would have to be compared and calculated at both points of space/ time(that is, their relationship and distances from other physical objects/spaces), and compared in order to accurately get safely from point A to point B.

I like how this is ALL under the assumption that we are the first "conscious" entities to seed the "universe." Not only that, but our current versions of known bio-chemistry and physics are somehow COMPLETE and understood. Terence McKenna talks "pretty" and he definitely had some neat ideas, but don't get it twisted... It's all subjective

I don't think his presentation is "twisted" at all. He is speaking from the perspective of a human, about humanity generally. His description of this is not necessarily mutually exclusive of the same phenomenon perhaps occuring dozens or billions of times before and after us, on other planets. After all, aren't we just part of a computer program from a previously developed super-advanced awareness?

Very well said. And to add to that. As we grow older, we learn how to better fit circumstances and experiences into categories. So. Overall, we are packaging up our experiences and it life seems less enriched when we step outside and look at it. To get around this. We should enrich ourselves with new information. Study new things, take up new hobbies meet new people-use your body more if you didn’t before. Use your mind more if you didn’t before. Try a new diet. Anything to enrich ourselves further. Hey, nice video. But I do have to say that Terrence’s timewave theory was largely debunked by his contemporaries, and even by his own brother. It is not a scientific ‘theory’ as it is sometimes presented. He never defines his variables for novelty, is not objective in his assignment of ‘significant’ times, and his math didn’t hold up to scrutiny. It is a nice bit of philosophical speculation and an imaginative idea, no doubt.

@@ThatGuyDownInThe Agreed, Terence himself says in this speech that it may not be 2012 but even if it happens in 500 years it is still only a small fractal of time considering the whole of universe's existence. Also, all of Terence's work is based mainly on his own experiences and THE experience is what he was all about, point being that nothing lasts and science is trying to permanently measure and deduce something impermanent. Regarding the "objectivity" of significant time spans in his timewave theory, they are not picked by him, they are the result of his measurements that are in accordance with the I - ching (the book of change) system.

Before this starts I've been saying for yrs that our whole solar system is spinning faster, check ur TV clock and on the turn of a new minute close ur eyes and start to count (like most were taught) 1 Mississippi 2 Mississippi 3 Mississippi) and so on. Then when u reach 60 seconds check ur TV clock it will be approximately 15-20 seconds ahead, it seems these days u wake up, gulp down a coffee get to work unpack tools its lunchtime, you start work again and check ur watch its time to pack up, you get home have food and bath, stone me its bedtime, yet once upon a time you could get so much done in a day, this applies whilst unemployed, time is for sure speeding up, but I think we don't see it because its down to the earths orbit speeding up , so much more to say on this matter but I now wish to watch clip, one love.
