I see it when you're first sketching it and I'm like: "Oh hey! I can draw that!" But then you continue and I just want to cry in a corner.

I like drawing, but as merely a moderately enthusiastic hobbyist, becoming a master draftsman isn't something I aspire to (don't think I have the concentration to pull it off, even if I did aspire to). That said, watching David draw makes me happy. It's good to know people like him are out there, real-life masters in the vein of the old greats.

+DrawMixPaint has a video on how to build a light box like this. It's really great if you plan to do still lifes and want to "save" your lighting or you're trying to figure out a composition. Plus it makes your objects look great ;)

Great channel, I will endeavour to use this sighting technique for future exercises. I'd really like to know what paper you are using? I use Fabriano Roma paper but would like something a little 'smoother', your choice of paper looks ideal. You are very talented, keep up the great work. :)
@VitruvianStudio
@VitruvianStudio 10 жыл бұрын
Fabriano Roma is a fantastic paper for charcoal, and is the default choice in many classical studios around the world. But it's not great for graphite -- the tooth is far too aggressive. My current paper of choice is Canford card or cover paper. Either will do as the only real difference between the two is the thickness, not the tooth.

great drawing! is this the sight size method you are using to draw? your work is outstanding
@VitruvianStudio

No, this isn't the sight-size method. The sighting techniques used here are "comparative measurement" and "triangulation".

why he flips picture upside down?
@user-el7kj8tz7b
@user-el7kj8tz7b 10 жыл бұрын
Right and left eyes are different. When we observing sth. it has been distortion in our eyes. Flip the picture can help solve the problem.
@revezmonamie
@revezmonamie 10 жыл бұрын
He actually flips it because he has everything he needs down visually and he's just working on angles that he could make more accurate by changing his approach. Flipping the image to help the brain or eyes is only helpful when working from a picture because you cant flip your still life.
@VitruvianStudio
@VitruvianStudio 9 жыл бұрын
Flipping the picture upside-down or sideways helps in two respects: First, it allows me to see the drawing in a new way, which can help me spot problems I may not have noticed before. It makes it easier to think of the subject as simply an arrangement of forms, instead of a "foot" - which can lead to bad decisions. We're all susceptible to drawing what we *think* we see, and not what's actually there. Second, some parts of the drawing require hatching at an awkward angle. Turning the board makes it easier to reach these areas.
