Time Team S18-E09 The Mystery of the Manor Moat (Llancaiach Fawr, South Wales)

The Team descend on the historic Llancaich manor house to investigate an archaeologist's dream. An ancient moat has been discovered in the next field and no one knows what it once protected.
It may have surrounded an early Welsh chapel, a Roman Fort, a fortified cattle enclosure, or even the ancestral home of one of Wales's most important families: the Pritchards.
A big empty field with a manor house in it is what geophysics was invented for, but what should be a straightforward search quickly becomes one of the most baffling and frustrating investigations Time Team have undertaken for a long time.
As the three-day limit approaches the digging becomes more and more frantic, as fields and gardens are overturned by the diggers trying to get to grips with the missing manor.
Even if very little is as it seems, they do discover that the history of the site goes back thousands of years earlier than they expected.

Tony Robinson is a Londoner, but he gets 10 out of 10 for his Welsh pronunciation. Few Anglo-Saxons put much effort into pronouncing Welsh language right, so this one gets a massive thumbs up! A very interesting episode.

Somehow it's a fascinating episode this one. And there's a lot of history in it. Fay and Raksha did look a bit miserable, though, bless them. Thanks Reijer for uploading all these.

you've gotta love the optimism of some of these guys. "we've found nothing here... so that must mean it's further up in the field!" or "this means people left it empty on púrpose" :P

Yeah that's the great thing about Time Team. In fact they find nothing better than anyone. Fricken pottery "sherds". Next to worthless. Thank goodness the metal detectorists in Scotland, Enlgand and Wales are on the hunt -- and with the proper tools for actually finding incredible artifacts of note!

... but they did, "Discover past subjects" that were a part of the Property's History. ... and that's the purpose of every show, each "Dig". The value of Stewart and Landscape Archaeology+ the work they did, the Digs, in both the Ground and Archives. + the Bronze Age finds giving value to the History of the Location and the Area. Keeping in mind, "Absence of Evidence is not Evidence of Absence". Another "Team" could very well dig on the Property today and find a previous Structure, predating the current structure. An "Absolute" in our Reality, "Any Thing is Possible. Reference: the "Universal Law of Attraction". ✨🔑✨

The family Pritchard comes from ap-Richard, and there are several 16th century examples: Item, given to William ap-Richard, vs. 1536, Privy Purse Exp. Princess Mary.

Col. Prichards wife, Mary Mansel is a distant Cousin of mine. I did not know this when I visited Llancaiach. It wasn't until I got back home to the States and was looking at the family tree (which dates back to the 500's.) that I discovered the connection. It was an awesome discovery to say the least!!

Seems like Prof Aston is in less than half of the episodes this season. The endurance winner has to be Sir Tony, in every episode until the last season. For the entire duration, it has to be Phil.

This was only two years before he passed, so I wonder if he was ailing. Also, maybe the news had already come down the pike about the ghastly changes for season 19 and he was starting to wean himself out.

Season 19 is a bust. He didn't like the dumbing down when they added the model and whoever Alex is. I miss Helen, Stewart, Mick in the later seasons. I can't watch them.

Have to give them credit for admitting the dig was a near bust. If this program was created in the US, they would have manufactured some drama from nothing. People in my country are so gullible.

dinsdale i live the link of the american version of time team.. but is best the UK version.. for me the difference is for the history.. in europe we have millegnal history whit big culture and different tipe.. in north america you have different tipe of history.. for the US a 300 years is big history.. for exempel, i live in the north of italy and for us 3000 years is big history.. in my near land we go from preistoric(cave man) to celtic time, roman, longobard, medieval, rinasciment and more and more.. my city is Milan and is here for 2600 years.. start in the 666 befor crist(celtic) and in 222 before crist become a roman city and go on to the modern era.. only whit the story of Milan we can talk for many day and nigth... this the link for the US time team:kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edqYqbqm1KmXhpc.html

I think the "ditches" may be what I know of as "swales", a shallow 'ditch' about 2-3 feet wide and about 6-12 inches deep dug to help a soggy place drain some water off to make it more suitable for habitation. They would need to be cleaned out every few years to remain effective.

when raking stone to lay a lawn you rake to the side if you dont use the stone to build a drain then you rake it to the lowest spot ,to level . i was just thinking that a 2 ft trench around the edge furthest from the path would give a better indicator of the history of the place and the gardener probably come across it already if there was anything there ! maybe gardeners should be taught archaeology .

Budget, scheduling and such. Everyone involved has other jobs to keep them busy through the week. The time isn't wasted, however. Consider TT as an advanced scouting party. Many of the sites they've discovered are marked for more thorough, longer digs.

Geo physiology is ground penetrating radar

not always. Typically they just use the stereoscopic magnetic resonance imaging probe (that's the bit that looks like a PVC 'H' they walk around with), which produces radio waves to determine the resistance those waves have passing through specific magnetic fields. But it can't be used where there is a large amount of granite near the surface. The GPR device looks like a lawn-mower and it strictly uses radio-waves for object detection.

sense of humor is the best response to Tony when he is being confrontational. he is always trying to make archaeology something it is not. it is a process of discovery. no one can tell what will or will not be found. he takes the fun out of it to turn it into pass or fail.

this one is exceptionally disappointing. don't give up on the series. they have some amazing finds, including the only known iron age coins in the world. happy hunting! look for the ones with mosaics involved.

I hate being this way but all through this episode I've been feeling an anxiety that everyone involved in this event is a character in a, not so good, Stephen king story called "the pretentious pretenders"
