Time Team Teatime - Session 28
Wrapping up Black History Month and our exploration of North America's early European colonies, we're staying in St Mary's City for a second week. We're joined again by Time Team's landscape investigator, Stewart Ainsworth. As always, Stewart brings his steadfast commitment to fact finding and unique sense of the bigger picture to proceedings.
We shed light on the latest archaeological developments in St Mary's City, including the various forts that have occupied the area and some of the more uncomfortable truths about colonialism. Acknowledging the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower's crossing, Tim and Stewart also discuss the push and pull factors of early emigrants from Britain, as well as the English regional origins of some of the so-called 'Pilgrims'.

This is great. I appreciate the follow-up! There are many episodes that left mysteries... I also always enjoyed Stewart's independent take on the sites - a very smart guy.

I always feel like a bit of an outsider looking in whenever I listen to a discussion of Time Team sites, but St. Mary's City is just 7 miles from where I live. Fun!

Never doubt Stewart !!!! His fort is exactly as he says, and exactly WHERE he says... I just know it! ....Sideways contemplation here: I'm a direct descendant father's side of both William the Conqueror and also Tursten de Fleming (his knighted Papal banner carrier, later given a defensive land and castle on the Wye and hence name change to Wytteneye/Whitney) But also, on my mother's side, direct descendant of Wm Brewster who led the Pilgrims with the Mayflower group. Ironically that same Whitney line came to Massachusetts also as a Reverend in the early 1600's. But American, I was born, hundreds of years later, "missing home" (mum thought me more than a bit odd, as a toddler, and just threw her hands up as I grew 🤣). I consider myself English. Had a chance to live the summer at Hever Rectory (uncle led the parish whilst theirs away, no longer the Rectory now but listed and protected) . Well... what I mean to say is, very astute reflections on Nevis and Kitts by Stewart... People hang onto home, and just imagine trying to survive without any freedom, trapped in indenture. It makes total sense that Anansi was invoked by the African American slaves too, an attempt to bring on the wrath of Anansi to crush their masters and attain independence..a secret mental weapon which would not give way to floggings or worse. ...Lastly, even on the rarest of occasions when he doesn't find exactly what others want Stewart turns up other previously unknowns anyway!!! Love Time team! Hey ..if anyone has read all this thank you very much! I just want to come home to England!!!! And do hope to be able to

Thank you for having this follow-up discussion with Stewart about the three days that Time Team spent at St. Mary's City. I had to laugh that when the team was there, they were complaining about the hot temperatures that Phil and John had to work in. Us American people are used to that heat and humidity. Then there was Sir Tony and showing off his upity ways. Glad to see that he wasn't just that way in the UK. Then Sir Tony said to Stewart that he couldn't understand why Stewart was so happy even though not much was found during the excavations. Tony obviously cannot understand that folks like Stewart and Phil love the work they do and any little find they come across is of such appreciation. Sir Tony ALWAYS had to find a mosaic floor or some major find in order to feel that the explorations were worth it. Phil was over the moon anytime he found something simple like flint. I am glad Gus has replaced Tony. I look forward to the new Time Team videos!

I love seven miles from a mass slave trade in the old Salem area of Winston Salem North Carolina. A town made of two towns based on cotton and tobacco. It's no coincidence all thirteen colonies were for profit corporations

@@greggarner8662 No, it is NOT where Stewart insisted it was. Its location was established a few years ago by a geophysical survey and ground truthing. Stewart's fort was a figment of his colossal ego and aerial photos, which showed the marks left by a 1934 celebration. That is not archaeology.

@@dlwinter2000Do you know Stuart? He's actually a good West Yorkshire lad, not an egotist but a decent, modest and intelligent person that has contributed much to his discipline. What have you done to be so condescending? I don't know you but your comment suggests that if anyone's ego needs checking it's you. I hope it is not typical of your general character but it does you no credit.

@@markhiggins8315 I was one of the professional archaeologists who worked at the St. Mary's City site (for nearly thirty years) and was seen excavating a burial in that Time Team episode, so I think I may have earned a little credit. Stuart got it into his head that the fort was located where he thought it was and no amount of evidence to the contrary seemed to interest him. Twenty years later, actual archaeology finally nailed down the location of the fort; it was in the field next to the chapel and not near the town center where he had insisted it was. Stuart may be a decent, modest, and intelligent person but he only seemed to be interested in his interpretation and not the facts.

@@dlwinter2000 I can respect your achievements and they are indeed creditable but it doesn't give you the right to make such a nasty comment. BTW I'm aware that on this occasion Stewart was incorrect. He has a long track record of using his skills in interpretating landscapes to produce many important results and breakthroughs on sites that other archeological techniques haven't being effective. I assure that he is, dispite your comments an archeologist and a very good one.

Interesting to see this discussion. I remember Stewart chasing that fort so hard and pushing to tell the story in Nevis too. Tim: you mentioned Anansi. Did you ever read or watch American Gods? You saying that traditions were carried over to the Americas reminded me a lot of Anansi in American Gods (NSFW language): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a62irZVl2M27lKs.html

Indentured servitude is well known in US history. The term used here is Indentured Servant, not Slave. Partly to counter recent tales of Irish sold into chattel slavery m Yes, indenture was a tough deal, whether you signed a contract since passage was so expensive or had been convicted of a crime. But you and your descendants were not fated to lifelong servitude. Maryland was founded as a refuge for Catholics with a doctrine of Toleration; this did not last. The Southern colonies were mostly Anglican. The Quaker colony of Pennsylvania was famously tolerant. The Pilgrimsß left their tolerant refuge of Leiden because their children were growing up too tolerant. Their colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony lacked toleration. Quakers and Papists were sometimes hanged. Troublesome members of their own congregations could be exiled to Rhode Island Albion's Seed by David Hackett Fischer links regions of Britain to settlement of the Colonies

So white people were slaves too and for most people in those times life was short and brutal. But for some reason we only ever here about black African slaves and how terrible it was for them and what terrible people we were for treating them the way we did. Never any mention of how their lives compared to ours or that it was their own people that enslaved them and sold them to Europeans. A story in history that Time Team unfortunately also failed to tell.

The "red legs" were of Irish origin. Barbados has a red leg population too.

@@markhiggins8315 You see there's a term I've never heard of "red legs". That's a history you'll no doubt struggle to hear about as that's white history and unimportant. Better we have a distorted, embellished or simply untrue version of black history preached to us.
