I rented a cruise America camper just like this back in April and ran the generator all 4 days because we were boondock camping and barely used the gas. We took showers daily in it barely touched the propane and didn’t fill the black and gray tank until the last day (with 7 people.) I definitely plan on buying one of these bad boys soon!

I couldn't wait to see ours go out the driveway for the last time. We had the same thing E450 32 feet long. ENDLESS MONEY PIT!!!!! You will never stop fixing these motorhomes. They are built like flimsy crap. Very top heavy and a turning radius you will hate. Had to keep a dehumidifier in it in the off season, wich made it nice and warm for the mice that invaded it. If you don't run a dehumidifier then it gets mold and mildew. 8 miles to the gallon, had 2 batteries. Every time you change the tires, it's not because they are worn out, they are dry rotted. Never again.

I bought a used 2000 20' class c Ford motor home with a V10 engine. It was way overkill with the engine - I used to tow my 20' jetboat behind it and you would never know you were towing anything unless you looked in the sideview mirror. Needless to say, it was pretty peppy not towing anything. In addition, the nice thing about a 20' class c is that it fits in a standard parking space - still had lots of room inside too.

Spot on Scotty. I bought my E350 Super Duty. 2000 Winni a dozen years back with the 10 cyl, Triton engine. 24ft unit, 9mpg. Still have it. Winnebago shells didn't seal well back in those days so struggled with that. Run the generator once a month and the carburetor will stay clean.

If I were going to buy an RV I'd go with the ford 350 because from my research they're the glorified version of the vans as far as the motor and chassis is concerned. Ford basically made no design changes for years so parts from other years just may work if in a pinch. I've talked to people who bought those off brand $500 Craigslist specials only to not be able to find parts to refurbish and repair them and that situation is most likely not going to get any better with whats going on in the world these days.

@@marcushennings9513 Definitely a real thing. I had the same thing happen with my Lexus, and my brother just did with his Jeep, which isn't even very old -- no parts available. My brother had to literally junk his car, which was running quite well. I got a custom manufacturer to hand-make a hose for my Lexus so it could keep running.

Back in the 70's Dodge/ Chrysler F40's were used alot too put coaches on. Back then gas was affordable and the conversion was cheap enough that your middle income regular Joe could afford one. Some of them sat alot. You would be amazed at how many of those old Motor Homes are still usable today, 40 some years later.

The old winnebago motor homes were decent quality for their time. I met a guy at the local speedway dirt track who has one. He actually added fuel injection for better cold starting and reliability. Plus he added air conditioning for the summertime. He and his 15 year old son race 600 microsprints and travel on the weekends. The RV looks like the one in the movie Blow with Johnny Depp. I also have a friend who has one they take their 4 wheeler dirt bikes and go to west Virginia to the Daniel Boone national forest to go 4 wheeling. Good times on a budget.

We live in our RV over 1/2 the year and the inspection (NRVIA) is the absolute best advice and based on what he paid, that was probably what he got. We spent $750 on our smaller 26' RV and got new tires and batteries and the roof sealed which would have been over $2k for us. 137k miles is very high for an RV. Looked it up as a 2020 in NADA and it seems like w/that mileage the price was high - however, it looked in great shape, especially the engine compartment! Our Sprinter diesel chassis has averaged 14.7 miles/gallon this year so you probably should do the calculation on each individual vehicle. Like this buyer, the best deals to be had are usually hundreds, if not thousands of miles away. We drove 8-1/2 hours for our's.

You have to be very careful about buying an RV. Steve Lehto says it's a bad idea, and points out that warranty repair is a nightmare. The internal components are made and warrantied by DIFFERENT companies from whomever made the vehicle components. Steve does recommend that you buy used if you decide to go ahead with it, and it looks like the guy did a good job inspecting the thing before buying.

A little tip to those who care: Avoid the Ford V8 chassis if you drive at high altitude. You can get out at walk next to the RV on the highway accelerator pedal floored.

We were told that when renting it out it's best to go through a service like ShareRV as they handle the insurance. Another thing to consider, especially if you'll be in it long term, is the cargo capacity of the rig and what the axels can safely handle. Take it to a CAT scale after you're loaded.

My youngest son in Northern Alabama bought an 30 year old medium size RV with an Isuzu Diesel engine. I forget the brand of RV but was quite popular due to having a very reliable drivetrain, getting very good gas mileage and having a queen size bed that was stored in the ceiling and was suspended by wire rope cables when lowered using an electric motor. My son picked it up for $500 due to the PO gutting the interior to locate water leaks then not having the time to redo it after repairing the leaks or keep the slimy green algae cleaned off the exterior. My son drove it home and scrubbed off the exterior while his wife measured the ceiling, walls and floor. Then they went out to buy cheap colorful bedsheets to staple over the ceiling and walls at some outlet stores. Then they visited a few floorcovering stores to see if any had hot deals on roll ends of quality sheet vinyl for the floor. He just laid that down onto the floor and secured the edges with wood shoe mold and seams with metal transition strips. Then he made frames using 1x2 pine to hold stacked Rubbermaid tubs, folding cots, lawn chairs and card tables. He's in a mountain biking club so the members toss all their stuff and bikes inside it when traveling to out-of-town meets. Think he said it gets around 15-16 mpg, has good ride and handles curvy roads well.

It’s time to hit the road, Scotty. The used ones you have to be careful with water leaks. You’ll average 10.1 mpg with an 8 cyl., gas engine, more torque and power than the 6. .

No, idling diesel at low rpms can hurt the engine if done for too long. The oil pressure gets low.

Less than 1 minute in, my first reaction, it looks like a rental. Built as cheap as possible. Minimal windows. No window in the door. I can do with out running boards, but leaving them off shows they were trying to be cheap and cut every corner possible.

My wife's aunt and uncle retired, sold their house and bought an RV to travel the country. Within the first week the thing broke down and they had to spend three months in a Missouri campsite waiting for the parts to come in and the damn thing to get fixed.

A RV with a 136,000 miles is a rolling problem waiting to happen. A lot of things can and will go wrong with that many miles on it. If it is a gas engine there is not much life left in it. The average shop will charge over $ 175.00 a hour to work on it. Stay away from RV with high mileage.

You used to get away with idling a diesel for a long time. Not any more! The emission control devices ( Particulate Filter, EGR, and DEF system) can't take idling like the 2006 and older ones could.

Bought this exact model from Cruise America. It was only slightly more than we'd have paid to rent it for a 2 month trip! We did waste money on the extended warranties. Everything that went wrong did so in the first 30 days covered by standard purchase warranty. The only thing was the front end needed to be rebuilt and we didn't figure that out until too late. Extended warrant did not cover that work at $2500. We've had continuous small problems that I fix as we go. I would not recommend any RV of ANY age (new or used) for anyone who is not ready to do their own fix it work. They always need something and getting anything fixed under warranty is more trouble than just doing it yourself. There aren't RV repair shops on every corner and they are often booked for weeks.

I have been thinking of living in either a trailer or a motor home and seeing American after retiring. I’ve checked out all kinds of RVs and these decommissioned Class Cs from Cruise America are exactly what I’m looking for. I like the bedroom with the walk around bed and the bathroom is outstanding in that it’s a split bathroom with the shower on one side and the toilet and sink on the other side. My favorite feature of this rig is that humongous storage compartment in the back. My only concern is that it’s as you call it a gas hog. But other than that, it’s (to me) a condo on wheels. Thank you for doing a video on this RV.
