I still love Tarja’s voice and that era of Nightwish. In my opinion, it’s really nonsense trying to compare Tarja and Floor.

All Nightwish singers are very good their own way. They have very different styles. Tuomas(Keyboard player) is able write songs different vocals. Because you like movies etc.. I little tell about him: He is huge film music fan(Hans Zimmer),One his favorite films is The Village and favorite tv-serie is Little House on the Prairie. He is huge Disney fan and he had made solo album about Scrooge Mcduck "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" and from that album is great song and music video A lifetime Adventure. One thing that gets overlooked. Back then there wasn't really music like this. Nightwish dropped like an atom bomb. Look at the silly Over The Hills vid. It was a brainstorm for many people, all the Epicas to come. Tarja deserves some credit for blazing the trail, but they all do. I can just imagine them planning this back then at the music class. I love this band so much, Tarja, Anette, Floor and all.

I think the thing that helped me on this is I came to this performance not knowing the band's history. I was stunned to find out later that Tarja had been shown the door, and not long after I see it announced that Marco left the band. Just found them and the two bright spots right off the bat are gone. Bizarre a bit; but, that aside.. I didn't have to compare this to another band lead. My thought was to every other performance of this I'd ever heard.. much larger universe. And this, is my favorite and the best performance of Phantom I've ever seen. The new lead singer is the new lead singer.. I like her too. But this is still the best version of this song I've ever seen. I'm 54. And I feel pretty safe in saying someone might be able to replicate this. I don't think there is any beating it.

Welcome to the first era of Nightwish! 😁 Tarja, the woman you just heard, is the first vocalist and one of the founding members of the group, who was born in 1996. Of the band's 9 studio albums, 5 were recorded with her, 2 with Anette and 2 with Floor, the current singer. Most of the songs people suggest in Floor's voice were not originally recorded by her, so it would be nice if in addition to the newer versions you also heard the originals. Each song sounds completely different depending on who is singing. The band also went through other member changes. Drummer Jukka was replaced by Kai and bassist Sami was replaced by Marko, the man singing in this video. In turn, Marko recently announced his departure and, so far, Nightwish has a temporary bass player.Tarja left the band in 2005, before KZfaq existed. Most of the live performances from her time were posted by fans. This video you just watched is from the DVD "End of an era". This entire DVD is incredible. A curiosity about this show is that Tarja hardly did it. She was sick that day and recorded this show on medication. You can usually find good videos with Tarja on the "Nightwish Arena" channel. As for Anette, I advise you to always listen to the studio versions of her. Live videos are not usually very good with Anette, but she has a beautiful voice. Floor joined Nightwish in 2012 as a temporary member and became permanent in 2013. It is easy to find good live performances with her. Many of these videos were posted by the band itself. In general the Nightwish live performances are magical, but the studio versions are also excellent. In addition, there are some iconic songs that you will not find live version or, when you do, the quality of the recording is terrible. An example of this is "Beauty of the beast". This is a song from Nightwish's fourth album, "Century Child". So far only Tarja has sung it. There is a live version, but the quality of the existing videos is very bad, even in the remastered ones. This can ruin your experience. Because of that, I strongly suggest the studio version. If you like to enjoy the lyrics of the songs, "Beauty of the beast" has a romantic gothic style. Nightwish had a different style in Tarja's time. Originally the band was a mix of Gothic metal, power metal, symphonic music and folk music. From Anette on, the influences of power metal and gothic metal are almost nonexistent. It is important not to confuse "Beauty OF the beast" with "Beauty AND the beast". Nightwish has these two songs. In case you want to know, there is a good live version of "Beauty AND the beast" recorded on the dvd "From wishes to eternity". This is the band's first DVD. It was recorded in 2000 and released in 2001, before Marko joined the group. It is a much simpler DVD than the ones Nightwish makes today, but it is excellent. At the beginning of their career the band did not have many financial or technical resources. This is a 20-year-old recording. At the time the group was on their third album, "Wishmaster", and they had done their first world tour. Tarja has a solo career with many iconic performances and partnerships. I would like to suggest "Victim of ritual", a live performance recorded at Woodstock in 2016. If you prefer something quieter, I suggest the song "The Living End", a live performance recorded in a church in Wacken. In this performance, Tarja is accompanied only by a piano, a violin and a cello. It's beautiful. There is a video of this performance on Wacken TV channel. Floor performed the Phantom at a dutch TV Show called Beste Zangers which is NOT a competition. A TV station invites 7 singers from different genres to a resort on the Spanish island of Ibiza and over a couple of weeks the singers get interviewed by the host and perform songs to each other. Every singer creates a list of songs that have some special meaning to her/him and the other six pick a song from that list that they want to perform for this person. The show is split into 8 episodes where every episode is dedicated to one of the participants. Episode 8 is the duett episode where they pick a partner they would like to perform with. Floor picked her idol Henk Poort, whom she adored since she heard him as the phantom in her teens (it was a joy to watch her fangirling on Henk throughout the whole season). Henk is a famous dutch bariton who performed many operas and musicals and was Andrew Llyoid Webbers favourite Phantom. She asked him if he would perform this song with her and he agreed under the condition that he can sing this with her and Nightwish when they play in the Netherlands. In the show the fantastic Marcel Fisser Band (these guys are really good, every song they played was great, no matter what genre) played the Nightwish arrangement. I think Nightwish never performed "Phantom of the Opera" after Tarja left, so this might be the last time they played it, because after this show Tuomas handed her the letter with the bands decision to part ways with her. Many blamed Tuomas for "firing" Tarja although it was a decision of the whole band. The backlash from the fans drove him into a deep depression and suizidal thougths. Luckily he could express his dark thoughts by writing a song about it instead of killing himself. But I would recommend to wait listening to "The Poet and the Pendulum" until you have heard a couple more songs from Nightwish.

I am a newer Nightwish fan and a big fan of Floor so gravitate towards Nightwish with her but respect how talented Tarja and Anette are too and especially love this version of this song even over Floor's version from Beste Zangers (though it's also really amazing too). I’m a huge Nightwish fan. However, everything I could comment on this video regarding Nightwish has already been written 100 times. Therefore, excuse me to take advantage of this video to seed another idea. If you like this style of music (Symphonic Metal with operatic style female lead singer), I suggest you might also take a look at the band Epica. More specifically, as you come from Nightwish here, I suggest you take a look at “Sancta Terra” from the Retrospect live concert. This performance features Floor Jansen as a guest singer beside Epica’s own Simone Simons. While this is maybe not the most typical Epica song, it is kind of the most popular song to get into Epica (just like “Ghost Lovel Score” is the typical entry ticket for Nightwish).

Floor (current singer): 2013 to 2020+ everyone knows Floor, she's super popular with everyone, especially right now, and is a really good singer, having a huge variety of singing capability (pop, classical/opera, belting, growling/raspy), able to sing nightwish's old songs that were for Tarja's classical/opera singing, as well as new songs for her own variety/range of singing abilities Unfortunately for Annette, she's a pop/rock singer, and a very good singer too, but her pop/rock singing just didn't go that well with nightwish's music, which was made for Tarja's dark classical/opera singing. I definitely belong to the group of Floor Jansen. But I like some of Tarja's songs too. This one is one of them. Most people can't do anything with Anette. I am one of them. There is not one song that I like to sing by her.

No reason to pick which is better, they are just both fantastic. Annette the middle singer might not have been able to get to their level live, but studio has some of the best nightwish songs. 2 songs in, you still havent even scratched the surface of what this band can do. Thrash metal to musical theatre to celtic rock, its easier to pick a genre they havent just knocked out of the park. And thats just because they havent got around to it yet!

Just so you know, this wasn't just a one time thing where they just threw this out together, live. Nightwish actually covered this for their their 2003 album "Century Child". This is important, because it is the album arrangement of the song that is used when Floor sings a duet with this on the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers with her idol, Henk Poort, who played the Phantom in the Dutch production of the musical. That you will definitely also want to see. There was a slight hint of BDSM throughout the album, and when you think about it, Phantom of the Opera also has those undertones. Eric keeps commanding Christine to sing and sing, and she does. Also with this, especially in relation to the musical, everyone forgets that Eric (the Phantom) is responsible for killing someone in the musical, but is portrayed as a troubled soul. Marco, in this case, plays up the bad guy role in this, and makes him sound more sinister, which was never done before in the musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber has stated many times that this is the best arrangement of Phantom of the Opera that he has ever heard.

Floor hasn't performed it with Nightwish, but she performs the Nightwish arrangement with Henk Poort, who played the original phantom in the Netherlands. Check out the Beste Zangers performance of it with Henk.

Who is a better singer? The solution is simple. Tuomas created the music and Tarja sang. Without this pair, no one would have known Nightwish. Every other singer has already joined a group that was already known. The most famous songs are those from the times of Tarja. From a later period, I only like songs that Marco sings.

Floor is my favorite but I am a fan of all 3 singers. Just know that most all of thecsongs you will see Floor sing were written for and originally performed by Tarja and Annette. Floor is so amazing that she can sing them like they belong to her even though they were written for 2 completely different types of vocalists....BTW...you discovered earlier than most about how they have always had 2 amazing vocalists with Marko in the group too. I'm so sad he left. I'm seeing them in concert for the first time in October. I'm a bit upset I won't get to see him preform live with the rest of the band.

You should react to Within Temptation - Shed My Skin that's been released recently. Note: if you don't like flashing lights just watch the album version and not watch the music video.

The split came because Tarja was too 'high maintenance', so to speak.. If you noticed it, she has a yellow jacket on in this video and a yellow mic.. She always wanted her mic to be the same color as her outfit at that moment in the concert. The band ended up not appreciating this behaviour and ended her contract with them, even though, as you saw, the chemistry was great. Especially between her and Marco. I've seen many reactions posting she did not now this would be her last tour (which ended in Helsinki, Finland, where the video was shot) and that she was fired immediately afterward. Though I remember trying desperately to get tickets to one of their shows (for me it was either Germany or Helsinki, being from Belgium) because I knew they were splitting up and I really wanted to see them all live before that happened. Sadly, I never got tickets, they were sold out so quickly it was insane! So I went out and bought the cd and dvd as soon as it came out

It is good to hear all 3 of Nightwish's lead vocalists sing because all 3 of them are very talented and contributed to the band's success. Tarja (pronounced TAR- YA) performs the song Nemo the best in my opinion, Anette was better in the studio versions rather than live but her rendition of 7 Days to the Wolves, and Meadows of Heaven are amazing, and Floor took the song Ghost Love Score and not only made it her own but in my opinion just sings it better, also her singing The Poet and the Pendulum brings a LOT of feels to a song that already had plenty.

Matter of taste but I prefer the Nightwish version. Tarja's operatic style vocals fit the song and Marko is excellent as the Phantom. Floor is a better performer and more versatile as a vocalist and can do operatic vocals too - with less vibrato than Tarja who's vibrato many times is a bit too much for MY taste. Nightwish "7 Days to the Wolves" Wembley Arena 2015 would be great for your next Nightwish reaction. One of my definite Nightwish favorites.
