"Clapton was a heroin zombie" that was a urban myth, like keith and his blood transfusion in canada. clapton was just a drunk, pete townshend had to drag him out of it. he rides that crossroads legend, to keep his lack of writing skills from exposing his soft underbelly. he paid robert cray millions never to play old love again, a song he wrote.

This is universal knowledge by now. Some people keep saing that Brian Jones was the "man", but Brain was only the key for the early-mid sixties, precisely the sound and spirit the early punk rock/New wave aimed to rediscover in the late 70 underground Rock scene in New York, before the Ramones transformed the concept of Punk when they arrived to London for a tour in 76-77. In the mean time, the Rolling Stones made a tremendously mature turn in their music when Brian Jones left and Mick Taylor joined the Stones. His guitar work was a destiny for the band to assured the band's impact through the 70s beyond the influence of the new heavy metal scene. THose songs played by Taylor gave the credibiliy to the band

Besides his obvious gifts, the reason Taylor has endured, is his integrity. He has stayed true to himself, and to the music. The Rolling Stones turned into aging parodies of themselves, but not Taylor. His work is as alive and vibrant today, as it was decades ago.

Indeed, but Mick Taylor's songwriting got snubbed by the Glimmer Twins on this cut. He got no credit at all, which is a travesty, and one of his reasons for leaving the band. What is this song without Taylor's soaring solo?
@chevy2599
@chevy2599 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am aware of some discredit thru out his time with the group. I suppose the Jagger-Richards collaborations were well established at this point in the Stones career, and it couldn't be tampered with by allowing other members seep into the song writing credits, businessly speaking. However, I do agree with you, MT brilliant guitar playing never really got the credit it should have, and yes this song would be useless without his guitar construction. This is one of my favourite songs of the Mick Taylor era along with Winter, and his live performance of Sympathy for The Devil on Get-Yer-Ya's Ya's Out.

Ronnie Wood was in the band for 18 years before he was made a “full member” of the band, so maybe they thought Toothpick should have waited quietly for a few more years before he got any ‘real’ credit, but that’s just the conclusion I came to as I listened with my head down in my living room.

Loved the Stones all my 67 years. Mick & Keith. Mick Taylor. Charlie too. But, why were they so tight giving songwriting credits to other band members? It’s clear Mick Taylor contributed to dozens of songs. Jagger confesses to love working with Taylor. Jagger would sing something & Taylor would stretch it out into a masterpiece. FFS, give him royalties. If the contract with record companies doesn’t allow it, do it out of your own vast bank accounts.

omeletpants There were a few reasons that I've heard Mick Taylor say in interviews. At the time of Exile, the band was pretty dysfunctional which was frustrating, Mick Taylor found he was getting sucked into the drug life which bothered him, and he wasn't getting the song credits he felt he deserved. He rephrased this to say he wasn't writing enough with the band so wanted to develop more on his own. On top of this, you have to consider that Keith Richard wasn't playing lead guitar at this point. If you listen to Time waits for no one, Can't you hear me knocking, Gimme Shelter and really most of the songs in the 1969-1974 era and Mick Taylor played the lead guitar. Keith provided some outstanding riffs but was mostly playing rhythm ... so I think it would have been inevitable that Keith would feel upstaged by Mick Taylor and that there would be some friction.
@elenar3696

MT said, in an interview, he left because his drug habit was getting out of control. He later added, years later, it was that and a few song credits.

Keith has always said good things about MT and wondered why he left? I don't think Keith cared that MT took the solos. Keith was never really into being a virtuoso player. My 2 cents.
