Film showing how the Convair F-102 would protect against a nuclear attack. Film from the Atlas Centaur Heritage Film Collection which was donated to the San Diego Air and Space Museum by Lockheed Martin and United Launch Alliance. The Collection contains 3,000 reels of 16-millimeter film.

Major Joe Rogers, the pilot in this film, was my Squadron Commander in Alaska in the 1960's. He later went on as a test pilot of the YF-12A, the interceptor version of the SR-71 "Blackbird". He was an outstanding pilot and a great leader -- all the Squadron pilots were devoted to him. The F-106 fighter turned out to be America's best fighter in the 1960's, and we added air refueling and sent it to Korea to defend against North Korean MIGs. The F-106's were deployed in Korea, Alaska, and the northern USA for air defense - we did not have enough of them to send them to Vietnam. I have flown the F-106 against the F-4 and F-104, and the F-106 can beat them both. My recently published book. "The Spirit of Attack", includes many F-106 stories for those interested in this wonderful fighter.

A few years later, AF 60467, the record-setting aircraft shown in this film, was destroyed in an accident during takeoff at George AFB.

True, The F-106 was a great aircraft, except for the AIM-4 Falcon which was not acceptable for Fighter vs Fighter combat. This was proven by the facts and statistics from Air Combat vs MiGs over North Vietnam. If the F-106 could have carried the sidewinder, then perhaps it could have been a better platform.

Col. Jack Broughton who wrote "Thud Ridge" and "Going Downtown" highlighting F105 Thunder Chief missions stated that the F106 would have been the ideal fighter to take to Vietnam.

@@steveturner3999 I loved the F-106, but have flown in Vietnam and the F-106 was NOT the ideal fighter for Vietnam. The F-106 was king of the high altitude skies -- could beat anyone -- but the North Vietnamese MiGs were not challenging our air superiority. Their mission was to stop the bomb-laden fighters - which were at low altitude. MiGs would not challenge F-4s that were out looking for a fight -- they wanted to attack bomb-laden fighters. If the fighters jettisoned their bombs to get into a dogfight, the MiGs would go home. So, I expect that F-106s could cruise along at 40,000 feet over North Vietnam all day and no MiGs would challenge them. The MiGs would stay low and go after the planes carrying bombs. There was no useful mission for the F-106 in Vietnam.

1525 MPH is a single engine record that stands to this day. F-106A is my favorite Century Series fighter (interceptor..)

My dad worked for GD Convair up at Plant 42 in Palmdale California in the 50's on both the F-102 and F-106 programs. He did the finish installation of the avionics, radar, and the Hughes Fire Control systems. He was proud that he had worked on what became the speed record holder by an F-106.

For the record, that is an *F-106A Delta Dart*, which is the successor to the subsonic *F-102 Delta Dagger*.

@MEs61 Sort of supersonic. I flew the F-102 for three years and seldom went supersonic. I then went to the F-106 and went supersonic often. I had a "rat race" with an F-102 I encountered while I was in an F-106. The F-102 was much lighter, with less power, but with the same wing area as the F-106. In my rat-race, I found that the F-106 could out-power the F-102 easily, but the dammed F-102 could turn inside my F-106. I tried every trick I knew, but I could not get behind the F-102. I zoomed up and looked down, and it was below me, pointed at me. I made pass after pass, and it was always pointed at me!

I crewed 57-2481 when I was with the 456 FIS, Castle AFB, CA, 1962-1966. The Dart was a great acft, one of the best.

I was a jet engine mechanic on the 106 with the 71st FIS in Montana and TDY to the jet shop with the 95th FIS. The shop was at Kadena Okinawa and the planes were in Korea. After we worked on the engines we ran them at the test cell before sending them up to Korea. The sound of the J75's was unreal when the afterburner was lit.

In 1958 at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. I was working Flight Test on this very F-106 (Tail No.459) with Convair. I was working instrumentation and telemetry. One of the pilots shown in this video James Stewart was one of our better Test Pilots. One day on final approach the aircraft flamed out and believe it or not he landed 459 in a small 2800 foot long dry lake bed and only blew two tires. The accident investigation ruled that on final approach Test Pilot Stewart moved the throttle lever to engine shutoff rather than idle thus the flame out was due to human error. Although the accident should not have happened Stewarts flying skills prevented it from becoming catastropic.By the way the F-106 was an interceptor not a fighter.

It was called the Delta Dart, the 102 was the Dagger. Learned that when I was 12 in 1958.

Why is the title F-102? Through the whole video they keep saying F-106. And looking at it it's obviously a 106. They're different aircraft.

Советский аналог F-106 - Су-15. Оба самолёта - перехватчики. Но у F-106 лучше бортовое оборудование и больший запас ракет. Но Су-15 с честью выполнял свою задачу. The Soviet counterpart of the F-106 is the Su-15. Both aircraft are interceptors. But the F-106 has better onboard equipment and a larger stock of missiles. But the Su-15 fulfilled its task with flying colors.

wouldnt the soviet counterpart be the su-9/su-11/mig-21 (pre-gun)? Su-15 seemed more like a soviet f-4 phantom
