My mother has been in care over a year and we have only had one care meeting which we requested. Care conferences are not being held on a regular basis, and follow up on questions or requests are delayed by weeks or even months. I am tired of passive aggressive behavior from staff and I can tell you that there is little accountability between staff and the administrator.. You would be appalled Teepa by what is NOT being done daily for these vulnerable populations.

Hi, @mrs.e3909, I'm so sorry that your situation is making you tired. We do know that there are many places where things are not done well, but we feel that we must always try. I'm wondering if it might help to talk to one of our team members about your situation to see if we could discover some ways to connect with the staff. Please reach out to our team at consult@teepasnow.com or call 1-877-877-1671.

I would add: Before you visit a potential facility, look at the requirements for licensing of residential care facilities in your state, so you know what is basic. This will give you a solid knowledge before speaking to someone, and can be pointed to in the future if problems develop.

This is good advice but staffing is so limited that if there is no one to bathe your loved one, they don't get bathed, if housekeeping doesn't work on the weekends, your loved ones room stays dirty until they come in or decide the room looks dirty enough to clean. I can email a unit manager and it may be days before I get an answer. Calls go unanswered in units and if I leave a message, no one returns the call. Follow up on anything is very poor. Care facilities are in dire shape post COVID. There is a nurse and one aide for 26 people in a memory care unit. This facility's website says they "treat our residents like family". They advertise courtyards, activities, caring staff delicious meals, and communication with family. Not a word of this has been our experience for our loved one. I have talked to a Teepa Snow regional person and she said they do not make business calls to promote their training services for staff, but that I could pass on her contact info. I don't think the administrator would act on anything I pass on. It is a sad fact that our loved ones who need to be in care for safety are not getting adequate care. I hear stories monthly through my Alzheimers support group. Licensing doesn't mean a thing on a daily basis.

Most clients don’t get visitors routinely, so if a client gets family coming by routinely but at different times, unannounced, you’ll get the best picture of what’s occurring at the facility and how your loved one is being cared for. I would also ask how many employees work a shift vs how many clients there are at that present time. They’ll always tell you they are fully staffed when that is rarely ever true. Ask if there is a nurse always on the shifts, not available because that just means the facility can call them at any time, but if a nurse is always there at the facility. Med techs are not nurses but strictly pass meds, so don’t let them mislead you with throwing that title out there. Med techs also aren’t doing floor care, nor are the nurses, so those you don’t count for the persons providing actual care on a shift. You can also press the call button when you are visiting when you or your loved one needs something and see how long it takes for someone to come when they don’t know you are there. Unfortunately these are the ways to find out if the care facility provides what the tour guide/director has promised you.

This is also a usual occurrence in the hospital setting. Staff waking patient up early in the morning or at night to take their vital signs when patient are medically fit to be discharged and only waiting for placements.

@@teepasnowvideos That’s for sure. To have this level of insight and understanding, it’s clear that you’ve been in that room having those conversations many times. So good of you to share your experience and wisdom. I have learned a great deal since I started following you a few years ago. And I recommend your videos often.

It is sad that Caregivers are always called the bad person that complaints too much. In my over 26 + years of support groups, the caregive is mostly alone in trying to advocate for somrone.Thanks😊.

Hi, @stanhensley3082, yes it's true that many care partners are alone and doing the best that they can. We hope that by providing help through Positive Approach to Care and using Teepa's techniques, we won't have as many complaints, but we can celebrate things that are working well. If you would like to discuss in more detail, please reach out to us at info@teepasnow.com or call 1-877-877-1671.

What's the feasibility of this advocacy approach specifically related to emphasizing the "care contract" violation when Medicaid (and of course her SS and pension is paying)? Due to the availability of QUALITY nursing homes that accept low-income patients I'm not sure I have many alternatives if this advocacy doesn't produce acceptable results. Of course I would not tolerating blatant neglect or abuse but simply expecting more individualized patient focused care vs task focused care? Sorry for the lengthy question

Hi, @donelleshorter5117, thanks for asking your question. As a member of Teepa's staff, I'm answering you with this thought - I think we can always attempt to have a discussion with any staff or organization as long as we remember to come with curiousity and a willingness to work together. We believe that asking rather than telling goes a long way to connect with others. If you would like to discuss your particular situation in more detail, please reach out for a free 30-minute consult at consult@teepasnow.com or 1-877-877-1671.

Name tags. The medical staff wears them consistently. The aids do not. I have online search for state standards but the results are vague in description. I have spoken to staff in passing, have asked their names saying, sorry to ask but name tags help me remember. The answer I get is yes everyone is supposed to wear them but sometimes they forget. For me knowing a staff care person’s name helps me feel more acquainted. The facility provides very good care, should i just leave this one (everyone wearing visible name tags) alone?
@teepasnowvideos
@teepasnowvideos 4 ай бұрын
Hi, @micheale-lynnjackson7839. Great question about name tags. We totally agree that folks should wear name tags as a way to connect with those to whom they are providing care. We also suggest that the name tags be worn on the right side near the shoulder so that they can be easily seen. If you would like to talk with someone about how to approach the topic with others, please reach out to our consulting team. Consult@teepasnow.com or 1-877-877-1671.

Tepa- my father is at a Va hospital but they’re refusing to move him to a memory care unit ( despite his diagnosis ) because they say he’s too large of a man and the staff there is too petite. So instead he sits in a room all day and watches TV without any cognitive stimulation or personal interaction. This seems so wrong to me. Please help.
