Not their fault fully. Mostly for the tesla crash. It was pushed to the news because people wanted to short tesla even more than it is. Cars crash all the time, just because it was on auto pilot doesn't mean you shouldn't be paying attention to the road.

Elon's interview with the Babylon Bee (a company that writes parody articles) was legitimately more insightful, thought provoking, and mature than his interview with TIME. This is where we are at in 2021.

Absolutely agree. I've seen both and the Bee has actually informative and entertaining conversation, the Time one just complains about him for having money and influence. Also, it's beyond stupid and a blatant lie to claim he pays "almost no taxes;" he's paid more in tax this one year than any other human being in recorded history. I mean you can argue about if you think he should be taxed more or less, but putting out easily verifiably false info to push political agenda is bullshit.

Elon Musk is playful, and Babylon Bee tapped into that. He's a serious man involved with endeavors with serious consequences, plus he concentrates so hard that his facial expressions are hard for mere mortals to read. But he wants to be a fun guy as well as a serious contributor. A Time interview isn't like an appearance on SNL, or a date with his singer GF.

@@justingolden21 Its not a blatant lie at all, Hes traditionally paid very little tax because he had very little income. He even said himself on the Bee interview he paid nothing in 2018 due to being in credit from 2017 lol. People really should make it a point to understand at least the bare minimums of how money, tax and the economy works, you included. His benefit to society is far greater than any tax he would pay from a income. Through jobs, tech advancements etc etc. But politicians and idiots like to cling to try paint all the rich as these evil people lol.

You should look up "Starship debunked" the idea basically only exists on paper and almost all of the technology for it doesn't exist and their plans aren't even possible so they have to rethink the whole rocket.

I remember when spotting a Tesla used to be a rare occurrence, now I see at least one parked in every parking lot that I go to, almost without fail. It really is the most popular luxury at the moment vehicle and priced in such a way that even normal people who really want one can afford it.

@@DeeAy09 No, they aren't. There's nothing luxurious about the inside of a Tesla. The price tag is for the technology, but the cars themselves are not made of high quality materials nor are they even properly checked for quality assurance. The technology and the fact they're the "first" mass produced electrical vehicle that doesn't look ugly is what makes them so expensive.

Teslas are cheap on the inside and competitive on the outside. It's the brand recognition that gives them their price point. But other than the battery technology/drive train and the tablets, nothing about them is luxurious.

Elon Musk is probably the only likable, approachable and thoughtful billionaire that ever existed. I can't think of any person who is more deserving than him. It is very rare to find someone as wealthy as Elon Musk, who generally cares about our planet, and our existence as human beings.

Elon deserves much more than this award. The undeniable truth is this: When Elon started on all of the prominent journeys he is known for (Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, Neuralink, The Boring Company, SolarCity, etc - which are more than most can ever do in one lifetime), they were ideas many people never ever thought would succeed. Musk didn't just start successful companies. He went after ideas that next to no one thought would work. He has broken ceiling after ceiling through sheer human enterprise and brilliance. Sure, government funding helps, but that is the case for most large companies with a large R&D focus. The man's ideas continue to change our future in outstanding ways. Not to mention he is so frequently featured in the media, which contributes significantly to what TIME considers in giving this award. It is unimaginable that all of what he has done has been achieved by one man in 20 odd years. I am alive to see it, and I am inspired by it.

I'm convinced Elon Musk is one of the most misunderstood people currently alive. One has to remember the guy has an IQ on par with Einstein: he just doesn't see the world the same way most regular people do. In my opinion, whilst he's certainly not perfect, he is one of, if not the prime person to support in this day and age. If you look at the sheer size of the accomplisments he and his companies have made so far, can't you just do anything but wonder what the future will hold, especially with the goals they are striving towards? People will always doubt if what he's doing is even possible, or insinuate this is all just for his own ego, but you got to remember that most people who bet against him in the past have been proven wrong. And yes, he may be the world richest man according to net worth, but honestly, i would be extremely suprised if it turn out he does any of what he does for personal gain. Glory, maybe, yes, but first of all for the progression of humankind. What kind of billionaire lives in a rental home and pours every bit of cash he makes of his stocks straight back into his companies? What kind of billionaire sits together with his (brilliant) engineers at the design table of the most advanced rocket yet, changing and itterating as he goes? One thing is for sure: Elon is not just a regular rich smart guy who got lucky. You may dissagree with him, find him immature, despise him because he holds so much wealth, even believe him to be evil, but you cannot deny he is changing the world for the better. Let's just all take a moment to appreciate that. And let's hope he's just getting started.

Whatever he is he is not even comparable to Einstein, they are very different sorts of human. Einstein was a genetic freak with a physically different brain to other humans, noticeably more cortex area. I have seen no claims about Musk possessing the same neurological characteristics.

@@carpediem8314 I see that he came into the company after the original founders. Managed the four rounds of seed investments that kept the company afloat, then poured into millions of his own. Was the person who insisted they move from sports to mass-produced cheaper vehicles. The person who turned the company around when it was weeks away from failure. I know they were heavily subsidised by the government. Also that the other original co-founders have their names associated with the company. Not sure why that is a scam? Then you have the Boring company, Neuralink, Starling, Space X, Solar City and several smaller startups. None of this is hidden, maybe some people just choose not to look. I'll take what he actually has accomplished than some online haters who have done nothing with their lives.

Elon seems like he genuinely wants to push humanity forward, and that is worthy of admiration. I hope Starship works out--it will be extremely exciting and inspirational for the entire world. Tesla cars seem like great vehicles as well, and when they make a cheaper model I'm sure they'll become much more prevalent. There's nothing wrong with building wealth along the way.

Became richest (on the books) person of ALL TIME 3. Oversaw Tesla's continued success 4. Stood up for what he believed in even though now people attack him purely out of political bias 5. Oversaw first fully private crewed space launch EVER, which also raised over 200 million dollars for St. Jude and the list continues.

These comments blow this out of proportion. Person of the Year isn't about who's the best, it's about who's the most influential. I think it's much more interesting for the reporters to challenge Elon's actions and allow him to respond than to "enshrine his legacy". They could have asked some more questions about his vision and what drives him, but it's not like nobody else has ever asked him about those things.

@@zandercerlong7238 Hey I'm not the one who thinks the half trillionaire who refuses to let his employees unionize is generous, nor am I the one who believes there's no in between giving all of his money or a fraction of his money away for tax purposes. He is quite literally indirectly hurting you and your life yet you defend him. It astonishes me.

@@angelomendoza6666 The "dood" didn't even create his company. He bought into it and accepted a bailout from the government who he now openly spites. If I was born wealthy like him I too could buy a company and give my employees horrible working conditions. Milking a cow would do more for humanity than he ever will in comparison to how many he indirectly or directly harms.

If TIMES really wanted to honor Elon Musk, they should have left out those speakers who were disingenuous in speaking about the man they called “Person of the Year”. Frankly, it was almost disceptive drawing people to watch a video to honor a man with a huge fan base only to plant and spin negative thoughts about him. Those other people, besides the interviewer, were so unnecessary and misinforming. This video failed to honor Elon Musk but at least he still got the title he is well deserving of. No one has worked more selflessly than him for the future of humanity. He is not someone who only tells others to work darn hard. He exemplifies hard work! He is not conceited nor prideful but the most genuine person who just happens to be the worlds richest man who owns no home; who works several full time jobs with the highest stress level; who has been making history many times over with never been done before, impossible achievements… Yeah! If you wanted to honor Elon, you should be honoring and highlighting the amazing achievements and his mission for saving humanity whether you believe it or not.

Absolutely not. Failing to criticize the person properly would be akin to cultism, he already has millions of mindless fans for that. With Spacex and Tesla , Elon is doing awesome things but Elon also makes false promises to hype up is company stock and fails to deliver like with the failed Hyperloop (now slow car tunnel) fiasco, he calls Tesla's autopilot "Full self driving" which it is not, Elon is wrong on Lidar and Tesla will probably lose the race to practical and safe self driving because of that flawed ideology unless they apply Lidar tech at some point. Elon misinforms his Twitter fans regular on Subjects he has no knowledge in. Elon argues with Turing award winning AI professors and researchers about the future of AI lol. Most people want to get a full picture of the guy not a biased one.

Elon Musk's positive impact on the world is second to none in our time, perhaps even all time. This man spends every hour of his day making the entire world a better, safer and greener place - TIME please reconsider if this interview and its' questions are a praise or insult to our ''Person of the year''. Imagine getting the chance to talk to one of the all time great persons in history, and then wasting time attempting to frame him as some kind of bad guy. Disgrace..

Despite all the critical comments towards TIME, you have to applaud them for picking a Controversial (albeit done so the media and Certain power hungry and corrupt political figures) character for person of the year. The main journalist also seemed like a genuine and likeable fella 👍
