What would you play, other than Phlage, in a hypothetical jeskai wizards list?

I think a control shell would fit a lot better for Jeskai. Your new wizards would be Snapcaster Mage and Tishana's Tidebinder, and your supporting cast would be Teferi Time Raveler, Swords to Plowshares, and the new card Wrath of the Skies.

Why the companion? Seems like it is just a beefy creature

Yeah I ended up dropping the companion to play Mana Drain and Fury instead. Jegantha is always worth having when its "free", but the opportunity cost of missing out on those good cards isn't worth it.
