Timex Marlin Re-Issue. My tribute and review to this gorgeous little watch. 34mm of vintage design delightfulness that is way overpriced with a poor specification! Why do I like it so much? Hope you enjoy my review.
I snapped this up in a sale (still available at £94.50 as of 11/3/21)

Thanks for another great review Dan. The indoor and outdoor macro shots are superb. The watch itself? probably not my cup of tea, but I get that they've done the vintage look really well. Love the intro :)

Thank you very much Dan for sharing your perspective on this cracking little watch. I agree with you, on paper, as it relates to specs, there's not much, not the greatest value for money. However, this watch, its design, and its pieces and bits are about nostalgia and how you feel when you wear it. From this perspective this watch is amazing. I would love to add one to my collection some day. Than you again for your thoughts and impressions. Enjoy it and be well my friend. All the best.

Thank you for a great video! I recently bought a 1960's Marlin, Dr/Nurse watch on Etsy for a decent price.( I'm studying to become a Vet Nurse and thought this would be a great gift for myself.) It's in great running condition and is keeping great time. I liked it so much I went and bought a gold one from the same era and seller. You can definitely still shop around and find the original ones in great working condition. I agree with your statements- They take you back to a time of yester-year. I love vintage watches, preferably from 80's and before. When life seem so simple.

I really like the look of these Marlin reissues. I agree it is a bit pricey though given the specs. You could get a similar looking actual vintage watch for the same money or less (although that comes with all the usual reliability issues/frankenwatch concerns). As you pointed out, Timex watches can often be found on sale for great discounts so I’ll keep an eye out for a deal 👀

Exactly, that's why it's best to buy from legit watch shops, Etsy or eBay, if you're doing online. They can be a bit more pricey if restored and cleaned. However, you know it's coming from a reputable source. Plus you're assured they are working properly. I bought a couple of vintage for half that price.

I share your enthusiasm for the Marlin Dan. I had the Todd Snyder and numerous vintage ones. I had a bit of a timex habit for a short while. Sadly the watch looks like a child’s watch on my wrist and it wasn’t really wearable. Nicer to just look at as a beautiful piece of design than to actually use I found.

I recently bought a Poljot De Luxe Ultra thin black dial, similar size & elegance, they're around £70, even more minimalist than the Marlin, just gold slashes in the dial for indices though they do a stunning silver dial with with a stylized 3,6,9,12 font that I'm trying hard to resist & just 8mm.

Favorite watch I've ever worn, honestly. I wear it at the beach, gardening, landscaping, woodworking, tinkering with cars, I've drummed wearing it, I do basically everything short of showering in it or submerging it for more than a minute or two and it's still running like a champ. +15 seconds /day and some polywatch on the crystal every few weeks is a small price to pay.

I love my Marlin, and I do agree, there really is something magical about it. It reminds me of my Grandfather, I'm sure he wore a Marlin back in the day. I do have a small disagreement, I do think this is a perfect everyday watch. I have a nice size watch collection, with some higher end watches, but I can't seem to take the Marlin off my wrist. Also, I noticed there are quite a few original Marlins out there still going strong. They definitely were built to last.

Yes, I bought a couple from the 60's and they are running exquisitely, perfect timing. Keeps the same time as my phone. I think it's the simplicity of yesterday-watches. Like he says, they're magical. A watch was a necessity and a classy statement. All you needed was to know the time. Smart watches have lost that appeal. Don't get me wrong, they are great for today's world. I own a couple and never wear them. That's why I decided to start a watch collection and begin to wear a watch again. How many times do you get, "Nice looking Smartwatch!" From people. They all just look the same.

Great watch! They were sold for $10-12 in the 1960s which is about $125 today, so not really a huge increase in price. The movements they used back then were also very ‘cheap’ but they did the job. The fully jewelled movement inside the reissue is far superior to the old ones. If you show them some love, these Marlins last forever.

The price may seem a bit high for the offered buildquality. I think it is moderate considering this is monopol watch. No other brand, big or micro offers anything like it. There are tons of "vintagestyle" watches out there, which is nice. But only Timex dares to offer the real deal. I think they earn their reward for this.

I have a couple of OG's - it's an adorable watch. I'd like one of these but the price is honestly a little rich. I wish they could have mass produced them and sold Lot's like Casio do with their Classics, which remain cheap. If I can find one for a good price I'd be tempted. They're as classic as the Mini. 🐕

The Indian vintage HMT Sona (?) watches you can get from eBay have a similar size, movement and crystal but actually look far less like toys than this. They are ~15€ each so you can buy 3 and combine the best parts of each if you want and still pay less than half of the Timex.

Having got both models, performed some measurements - Original 1965 Timex Marlin Width w/o crown 33.3mm Width with crown 25.4mm Depth 9.7mm Lug with 7.3mm Crystal glass 2017 Reissue Width w/o crown 33.3mm Width with crown 25.8mm Depth 0.9mmp Lug width 7.3mm Crystal acrylic I got mine reissue for £150 - 30% off the £174.99 MRP, as had a non TIMEX lizard replacement strap with a TIMEX branded buckle. The new watch wound well, might be gaining a little time, looked better for the change of straps, the dial wasn’t the same as the 1965 models, differences with the Arabic numerals being as the hands/darker, numerals are another style. The new watch was a bit noisier than the original, the dials reacted in different ways to light, it would be rare to find a stainless steel Marlin in the 1960’s, as plated, incidentally, the new Marlin was really a Mercury, as no Waterproof on the dial 💦.

I don’t agree, the Giorgio Galli 38M is a beautiful functional watch. There isn’t anything like it on the market by any maker. Could it be better? Yes, Timex could put a Swiss movement in it, or add a date complication but it would cost over $1K.

@@mikequinlan9585 , the watch itself may be great, I can't argue about that. I am just concerned Timex picked an obscure movement, they even try to hide the model! Do car manufacturers hide the reference of their engines? You bet they don't. Watchmakers that hide the caliber references can't be called watchmakers anymore.
@mikequinlan9585
@mikequinlan9585 Жыл бұрын
@@RaphaelRousseau So if they identify the brand of the movement and number on their website does that make them a watchmaker? Timex, like many high-end and affordable watch brands, use many different movements. They’ve used the Seagull movement for years. They use a Swiss quarts movement in the American Documents series, and Miyota movements in several of there automatics and manuals and there may be others too, it’ a normal part of the watch business. For the record, yes car companies put other manufacturers engines and parts into different brands all the time. The foe example, the Toyota Supra shares the engine and other parts from BMW, does that mean Toyota isn’t a car company anymore? We live in a global economy parts are shared when it makes good business sense, however uncomfortable it may be for the consumer. If you want to buy a watch from a company that makes all the parts, including the movement, in house buy a Rolex. I guess Rolex meets your requirement as a watchmaker.
