I just wanted to thank you for making this video. I changed the timing belt, the tensioner, the water pump and both auxiliary belts today all by myself thanks to this video. I can't thank you enough. Your video saved me $500. It's been an incredibly satisfying experience.

@@robinsonsauto I did successfully complete my 2009 Elantra timing belt and water pump. However, it 2 extra days to get the dang crankshaft bolt out. I finally had to make a tool. I think you need a better warning to those without a good impact wrench. When I finally got that pulley held so it wouldn't move it took all my strength on the end of a long breaker bar to get it loose.

old post I know but, I have a 6x6 wood block I keep around in the garage ...... Took my 1/2" breaker bar & put like 3 extensions on it .... Put the block (its roughly 12" high ... I put the ratchet end on the woodblock .... Then smack the ratchet end with a 6pnd hammer ..... It may bounce a time or 2 but usually just a few smacks breaks the bolt loose. ...when I tighten it up, I do the same. Get it tight as possbly by ratchet, then use the breaker bar & give it a few smacks for good luck.@@danielflemmingd.c.5295

Nice job! I've seen a lot of videos on the Kia and the Hyundai's as far as timing belts go, but no one really explains the whole tensioner and putting the pointer in the window issue. You actually show how it's done. That will help a lot of folks out. Excellent detail and explanation

Great video ! Clear and concise. I just did this last week and can confirm that paper gasket that sticks to the water pump/block is a pain in the ass! I must not have gotten it all off despite scraping for 45 minutes because it's leaking. Going to redo it and clean it off better and use some RTV this time.

Agree, i have my overwhelming moments more often than i would like luckily have good support near by most times that will step in and help one way or another most times taking the brunt of it, but they understand. or i just walk away for a bit. doing these demonstrations has helped slow me down some and logically think through issues that would otherwise get the best of me. also learned if the book says 4hrs labor expect to spend a good part of that in awkward positions so schedule it for your better days and if your going to do a video demonstration expect to spend 8hrs then double that for editing in which you get to relive the moment all over again while taking out those moments we mentioned hahaha lol it can be exhausting

Hi, very helpful video. I changed out the timing belt, water pump and other belts on the weekend for my 2007 Kia Spectra 2.0L. All seemed to go well, but shortly after starting it up, the engine light came on. Took it into Autozone and the machine says it's a "P0016 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)". The car seems to the running normally. After going back over your videos, the only step I missed was rotating the cam two teeth clock-ways after setting the tensioner and rotating the two complete rotations. Could this be the cause of the engine light? What's the procedure to identify the problem and fix it? Thanks

Judging by the old timing belt sicker on the cover, the owner of this vehicle must be pretty meticulous on maintenance. Most people don't even realize they have a car with a timing belt unless they have had one in the past that has broken or left them stranded. That Hyundai looks very well kept for a 2009 econobox. Even the old coolant looked clean.

cjones4512 yes he is and wanted to be certain. he didn't have a service record of it actually being replaced just inspected at 60 some... It's funny you say that because yes he had a bad experience in the past on two separate occasions, I asked the same question
@johntracey523

I liked watching the video. Thanks. I have a few questions... as you removed parts you did not seem to talk about inspection of the old parts (water pump, TB idlers, TB tensioner). Were they worn? Also why was the water pump replaced? It was not driven by the timing belt, so not a critical replacement. Is it replaceable without removing timing components? I would have loved to see how to replace the Crank oil seal. Is that not a standard part of this job... since you had it all apart... Why not? This must be a 6 cyl, since I did not see any balance shaft sprockets? Do you recommend using aftermarket parts (Gates kit) for such critical maintenance? Thanks
@robinsonsauto
@robinsonsauto 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for the questions, mentioned where all components known for failing not necessarily failing at the moment, more of a proactive preventative maintenance step. not so much the idlers themselves but the bearings in them. the water pump cant be replace without removing timing cover/belt. this is why its including with the kit. Gates has been good to me so far. as you seen OEM uses gates as well thats the main reason i went with gates in this application. seals are not usaly part of the pm however it is an option. most likely next time around its a 4cyl. hope this helps

Even if the water pump is not driven by the timing belt you better replace the water pump at the same time cause you will need to remove everything if you just want to replace again the water pump. You need to remove the idler puller to reach one of the water pump bolts and even draining the coolant will make the timing belt all wet.

I followed your instructions to the letter - and it runs perfectly. I used the Gates kit, just like the one you used. The only thing I had a problem with was getting the pointer to stay in the window. I adjusted the tensioner about 8-10 times and it would always shift around. I eventually decided that having the little tab where you insert the 6 mm Allen wrench point straight down gave a pretty consistent correct indicator, but it still shifted around a bit. Maybe this is supposed to adjust for wear? The tensioner seems to be free to rotate a little on its mounting. Other than that, no worries. Great video, I won't ever have to worry about breaking a timing belt again because I'll replace it about every 50 K miles. Thanks for making it easy.

I'm having the same issue where I keep installing the belt, setting the tensioner so the arrow is in the designated window, torqueing it down to 22 ft/lbs. When I go to turn the crank sprocket 2 revolutions, I keep coming back after the 2 revolutions and seeing the tensioner pulley arrow shifting slightly outside the designated window. I've removed/re-installed about 8 times now and it's getting quite frustrating. Anyone have any advice on this? Will torqueing the bolt to greater than 22 ft/lbs or something keep the arrow from moving? I cannot find anything on the interwebs about this specifically.

@@CityCTV The only advice I can offer is as stated above, just have the tab where the 6 mm Allen wrench is inserted point straight down. I have been driving it for a month now with this adjustment and it runs fine. I think the reason the arrow shifts around has something to do with automatic wear adjustment, but not really sure about this. Good luck finding some definitive explanation. If you find one, let me know here.

just tight enough, that's all. it's too tight to use a torque. even for the A/C pulley.

I always clock the crank back 30 degrees or lock the cam. You ever have one of these fucken cams kick back. It happened to me twice over the years. After clockin the crank back 30- 45 degrees haven't ever had another mishap. Freewheel the cam where i want it. Lock it and then put number one piston top dead.

Nate Figueroa, I didn't do that on my Elantra 2008 and I follow all the instructions in this video. 50 K miles with zero problems and was my first time ever.
