Timing Belt & Water Pump Replacement DIY + Torque Specs on Hyundai Elantra incl. Touring (i30)

In this video, I replace the timing belt and water pump, as well as the tensioner and idler pulleys, on a Hyundai Elantra. The vehicle in the video is the Touring model but the engine and drivetrain are identical to a regular Elantra. This process applies to the 2007-2010 Elantra (HD chassis).
I've included torque specs (a common request) in my walk-through which I start providing once things are going back together.
The parts I used in the video are from a kit I purchased on Rock Auto, specifically the AISIN TK003 kit, which consists of: timing belt (Mitsuboshi), water pump, water pump gasket, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley.

Watching this great video helped me decide to do my own belt replacement. This is on a high mileage car that I just hated spending all that money at the shop on. The job pretty well went exactly as shown here except I had lots of trouble removing the harmonic balancer bolt. Even with a 1/2 inch impact gun set to max it would not go. An hour of consternation followed to try to figure out a way to hold the flywheel still while I wrenched it off. Found another internet source showing how. I wrapped the old alternator belt around the balancer, tucked under itself and looped it around the A/C idler. turning the flywheel with the wrench CCW locks it rigidly in place. Then a breaker bar and three feet of pipe got it free. Hope this might help someone else in my situation. Thank you for making this video!

Ok, this didn't work for me. The timing marks keep moving unpredictably with the counter clockwise force and now I need a new alternator belt. Off to the store to buy tools.

My crankshaft pulley is stuck on. Bolt is off but the one that drives the AC belt and alt belt isnt going. The only pulley small enough to fit in there slips off. Any suggestions?

Brand is Aisin. I listed the kit I got from Rock Auto in the description.

If we have no impact gun, how do you get access to the flywheel teeth to stop the motor from turning over?

You'll need a crankshaft pulley holder to hold it in place while trying to loosen the main bolt. I honestly can't remember if that's on option on these engines. If not, you could always try the starter bump method, though I wouldn't recommend it from a safety standpoint.

When do you pull out the pin that comes on the new tensionsor pulley?

Once the new timing belt is on properly and everything is torqued down, then you can take the pin out.

My water pump is making a weird noise. I thought was the belt and remove then tight again, but still making it. When I push gas noise goes away, when I stop or an idling it make the noise. I used a stetoscope and I hear the noise by the water pump bearing, but the car is not getting hot. Everything is working fine.

100% IS YOUR WATER PUMP. remove the whole thing and replace it with a new OEM.

approx how long did it take you round trip? im planning on doing one after work and im trying to plan. i know they call for 3 hours but that usually means 1.5 lol

I'd say 3 hours is a pretty fair estimate. It's hard to gauge for me since I was recording video a lot of the time.

In order to replace the water pump, you need to remove the timing belt first.

Tension information is wrong and in the wrong position, Back to supply house for a new belt!20 Foot pounds on tensioner bolt

You're absolutely right. The needle of the tensioner should end up in the smaller window to the left of the one I initially pointed out. I recall another commenter pointing this out to me but I can't find it. It was a while ago. And 20 lbs-ft is correct for the tensioner bolt.

@@dkeny55 15 to 22 fl of torque. even putting it on the window, the tensioner will put it tighter.
