It's not necessary to mark the belts, count teeth, etc. Just make sure the marks on the crank and cams align with their respective marks on the engine when the belts are under rotating tension. I've done this on a 4-valve Ducati 748, Subaru DOHC and Subaru SOHC with no problem. It's the principle that overrides every other hack; the timing marks are the fundamental measure of correctly timing an engine.

Hello. Thanks for your input. Appreciate. We've had the discussion before as you can see in some of the older comments. However, unfortunately there are Ducati models without any markers accept for the crank shaft. Don't know why, since I am not familiar with Ducati's model histories. Maybe it's different on 4 valve Ducatis. (Since I am not aware if you noticed, please don't use the instructions in this video for 4 valve bikes. It doesn't apply there.)

why do you need to transfer marks between belts? Isn't it enough to just keep the engine position/cams locked?

Hello. Thanks for participating. Please note that this video addresses the procedure without having any of the tools Ducati recommends. Also a certain model might not have any markers except for the crank shaft.

is the allen 5mm not recomanded anymore because ducati want people to go to the dealer or?

One can assume, but actually it's hard to say. It might have a financial background preventing customers being able to help themselves or at least make it harder to achieve this goal. Or it might be dealership politics, to produce more customers for them as a compensation for long lasting products (which motorcycles nowadays are). Might also be an idea to make some money by offering expensive tools or to reduce guarantee claims in the long run. But then again the reason for using frequencies might be well proofed and actually in the interest of all people involved. A new generation of motor engineers might see things a different way and make good things even better. I don't know. But, and here I agree with you, at the end of the day I do have to pay more, if I can't find a way around. However: Thanks for watching and getting in touch. 👍

I'm a bit confused, why mark the belts? If you've got the correct size shouldn't the belt itself be able to go on any way? As long as the crank shaft markers are lined up?

Andrew, thanks for keeping the discussion alive. I appreciate. As mentioned below (as an reaction to the comment of tonebonetones) the instructions here had been made with more unexperienced drivers in mind. To minimize the risk of damaging ones engine. For me personally it's a more safe way and it should remind people of how crucial the positions of crank and cam shafts are. The cam shafts can move very easily, if they aren't blocked. However, I'd always recommend to mark as much as possible, just to make sure. Especially because I don't have the mentioned Ducati tools such as the cam shaft blockers and some models just have a marker for the crank shaft, but none at all for the cam shafts (might be because they have plastic timing belts housings).

Marking the belts isn’t necessary and in my opinion it makes the procedure look more scary than it really is. As long as the timing marks are all lined up in the same places before and after, and the engine turns over by hand without resistance you are good to go.

Hi. Sry for the delay. I don't use an iPhone any more or have otherwise access to the Apple ecosystem, so I don't have any idea how to get a hold on the app. Maybe you can check directly at the Gates website? Might be worth a try. Thanks for your nice words and I wished I could be of more help.

What are you thinking lifetime of ducati scrambler? Can we use it 150K-200K km without big engine problems?
@goerage
@goerage Жыл бұрын
Hard to say, because it not only depends on how good the engine is, but also on how you drive and how seriously you take maintenance. In general you can be very optimistic to reach a high value, since the Scrambler's V2 engine is a solid product, being built for decades and some of them are even declared as bullet proofed. Rumors speak of around 200.000 km (a 750SS from '92, if I remember correctly), which is usually a BMW/Moto Guzzi characteristic - but based on my personal experiences, I can't really tell, if this is actually a true statement or just Ducati marketing. I never met somebody with such a high mileage, but then again, I live in Germany with driving seasons of 6 to 8 months per year and an average mileage of around 5.000 km (max). If I have to guess, I'd say, if you reached 60.000 km with you Scrambler engine without bigger problems, the engine will run forever ;-). Just don't kill it on the way with murderous RPMs and don't neglect the usual maintenance such as regular oil changes.

hi, did you just change the belts? Have the tensions changed? Also, what is the brand and model of belt you are using?

Hey. No, they haven't changed so far, at least not outside a non tolerable range. However, I it's till recommended to do this check-up.

Akat, thanks for your kind words yesterday and I wished I had the time to follow your suggestion. But unfortunately there are so many things need to be done at the time being. I'm working on some clips about changing wheel, swing arm and strut bearings on a Yamaha, promoting a book on motorcycle maintenance (German only), a website - and life in general, which seems to be the most complicated task in a world gone mad ;-) However, I put it on the list and might come back to you on this matter ...

Marking the new belts is totally superfluous. As long as you check the belt is correct and compare it to the old one ( it is surprising how next to zero stretch will be observed in the old belt) the number of the teeth are the same...you cannot put the belt in wrong by somehow squeezing in an extra tooth between the cams unless the cam wheels get accidentally nudged (and there are cam block plates you can buy to stop this unlikely event happening). When you tighten the belts correctly, and the cam positions are still in the correct marked positions, it will be correct.
@goerage
@goerage 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for your attribution. I appreciate. Thing is, I actually made this video for people, who neither have cam block plates nor plan to invest in these tools and maybe I should have made that a bit more clearly. However, of course you are right by mentioning, that as long as all positions were still in the marked positions, one should be good to go - but given the fact, that a shitty incidence here can seriously damage a motor, I decided to go the safe way and describe a more fail safe procedure. Shit simply happens, people get disturbed, people leave work and come back a week later, whatever else, and I personally felt more comfortable by walking the long way. After all, this is KZfaq and as much as I appreciate your experienced approach, I'd like to hand over as much information as possible to those, who are newbies and/or have a hard time to learn how to work on motorbikes.

Cant believe you would have to count teeth and mark a belt The size and frequency of the teeth should preclude doing this It should just be align the cams and the crank and slap on new belts. Its overboard Ducati is not that far advanced this looks like a late 80s subaru I would advice turning over by hand when your done but this isnt a helicopter people

Actually I once heard, that Ducati placed marks all over, so it had been easy even to unexperienced users to change the belts without any hassle. Don't know, if this is true, for I am not really familiar with the company's bikes' histories. However, my guess is, this customer-unfriendly situation is due to keep the money flowing ...
