If you need to replace the fuel pump (mechanical), while you have the pump off is a good time to check the chain, as Jeff said to rotate the crank backwards, you can feel the slack through the pump opening.

Right. BUT that only works on 1962 to 86 Ford stuff. Most other American V8s are not "gifted" with that ummm test port. =)

I had a 351W that skipped a tooth or two. Did the wrench test you showed. Engine rotation direction and the button moved right away. When I checked the other direction, it took a full 90 degrees of turn to move that little dude. New chain and gears and runs like a top...mostly.

There are 2 top dead centers on a 4 stroke engine, probably important to say which one. Also, never heard of a rotor referred to as a "button". Interesting.

Super easy to pop off the fuel pump and reach in and touch the timing chain and check for tension

Goodson has a crank Turner socket to rotate the engine. Also engine tools. They have valve seal tools. OTC has tools.

AutoRestoMod Muscle Car Resto and Modifications The right tool gets the job done! They help you do jobs faster and easier. I have most of their valve seal tools. The valve seal pliers replace positive seals easy. The valve seal protector is shaped like a bullet and fits over the stem and protects the seal. There are crank sockets for Ford, G.M.,and Chrysler. Mac Tools and Autozone have a damper installer. A Ford 3.8 requires a OTC Ford damper installer adapter. Clothes-line in the cyl. can be used to lock the engine to remove and replace the crank bolt. I used a soda straw to feed the clothesline in the cyl. Use Permatex 14a on bolts that go into coolant passages. You can use washers to replace axle studs. To compensate for chain slack, lift up the distributor at #1 TDC on comp. stroke on 0 and point the rotor at #1 cap. Turn the distributor way back against normal rotation and lower the distributor. Turn the distributor for normal timing. Install everything and set the timing. You are compensating for slack. The crank has to turn less to fire #1. This translates into POWER! Watch it fly! You can also do that if the chain jumped to get it to start.

I'd love to know how far is too far. How much balancer movent is acceptable. (Before rotor shows movement) .5 degree? 5 degrees?

The front seal dosen't even touch the crankshaft. It rides on the harmonic balancer.

I’m going to change out my timing chain on my 79 F150 302. Does the two piece fuel pump eccentric go bad or not? Furthermore I noticed after I took off the upper sprocket, the camshaft thrust washer had noticeable wear. Should that be changed too?

If wear is noticable, yes. If the fuel pump eccentric does not spin freely it too should be replaced.

I have this problem also, I'm thinking the timing chain issue is causing to afterfire out the exhaust @ 5200 RPM WOT.

If that engine is going in the ranchero why not do the top end stuff?

Sorry to be unclear, the Summit Racing 5.0 will be eventually headed for the Ranchero. Some lucky soul may end up with the 260 from the hard top.

Will a bad timing chain cause low compression an low vacuum

Low compression is typically an issue with rings or valve seats. low vacuum can be indicative of valve sealing or rings. If the car is smoking (blueish white smoke that does not dissipate) Then you most likely have a ring issue.

Thru Itall - It will cause low manifold vacuum. If compression is otherwise good (let's say maybe it's had a ring job in the past) the manifold vacuum will come back up only at higher initial ignition timing. To add to the issue because of manufacturing tolerances, even a fresh chain may still leave a camshaft with late or retarded timing. This is one reason savvy tuners always use a degree wheel. Even a stock grocery getter will benefit from a correct crank and cam relationship.

When you shut off the engine and go to restart it and it just makes a buzzz sound from the starter due to no compression then pow backfire. Its time to then change that chain

If the chain is bad and breaks, it can damage valves.

@@AutoRestoMod thank you..I have a no fuel no start problem..I'm not getting any fuel pressure from my tank..or when I put gas in the carburetor and still no start...it cranks but no start or fuel..I checked lines and all no fuel coming from tank at all..i have new fuelp pump..new plugs,wires..any ideas?? Please..any help is very needed it was my daily driver

Cam was right, you should have put a cam in it, but just a RV cam, you wouldn't have to change any thing else as they give you more bottom end torque, and its going into a ranchero.

Richard, this is how I make my living. Ads are a beneficiary and valuable part of me making these videos. Content creation is a hard job, and I do my best to keep the ads as unobtrusive as possible. BUT, I won't work for free. Would you? You know, go into work on Monday and say he boss, I'm good a good hearted guy and I will do this job for nothing. Don't think so. I can't do that either. I spend at LEAST 40 hours a week on video production. I should get something for my time.
