This is the first time I've replaced a timing chain on my own, the process wasn't too difficult.
Since I had a set of manuals to help from Factory-manuals.com which cost about $75 and the special tools needed for the job from amazon that cost about $65 it made it a breeze. After a week of driving the car, it's been running great! the coolant is at the right temp.
Enjoy the video and if you like what you see, hit the like and subscribe.

Great video, gives some confidence if you are doing it for the first time. One very important step that wasn't mentioned is to do a timing chain reset with VCDS.

The only thing you need to clock to the correct position would be your cam gears and fuel pump with respect to your crank sprocket. Oil pumps, water pumps, etc… don’t need to be clocked.

Nice insightful video. I do a lot of my own work and my audi a5 has 131k miles so this is something i may consider doing as preventative maintenance since this job doesnt seem to bad to do. My timing cover has a little leak anyhow. However, i have changed the oil early with liqui moly ita whole life and always add liqui moly anti friction additive so i may not really need to do this for some time. My car runs great. Ive maintained it well. With higher mileage typically means a little more advanced maintenance. Typical for Audi but quite manageable for the capable diyer.
@latenightgarage7895
@latenightgarage7895 11 ай бұрын
The liquid Molly won't make a difference in the stretch of the timing chain or the wear on the tensioner, it probably makes a difference in wear on internal bearings and seals. But just be cautious of the chian because once that is out of spec it turns into bent valves and machine work plus a timing chain. Honestly after I did this all I'm worried about is the piston ringing bc of oil consumption but that's not a big deal like timing.

Hey sorry for the delayed reply, but for you or anyone is looking on ecstuing for a timing kit for 2013 to 2016 you'll look for the kit that says "from 2013" and if your looking for 2009 to 2012 it should say "up to 2012". I see they now have different variations with different years, if you can't figure it out I would suggest calling them to get the correct kit. I'm sure they'll be happy to help, hope this helps.

So the dark links on the timing chain are only for initially setting the timing. Once you turn the crank over a few times to verify you will notice the dark links no longer line up. Always use the marks/triangles on the timing gears to line up afterwards. Tons of vids on that on KZfaq. Also if you ever do this again, take off the top cover first and rotate the crank around and line up the marks (Pulley mark and triangle on lower cover), then check to see if the upper sprockets are lined up, if not they are 180 out and rotate crank one more time and they should all be in rough time. Good vid!

Just wondering if you had any particular sound my car is a 2015 Audi A4 with 95k miles and it runs amazing but I been hearing that these engines are notorious for timing chain it’s my first Audi and I was just wondering what was your reading when you took it to Audi to check the degrees
@latenightgarage7895
@latenightgarage7895 Жыл бұрын
So I was looking for my service page from audi but couldn't find it, I do remember that my chain was -4.00 degrees and you can push it around -6.00 is what the service rep said. The motors in the 2013s and newer are better than the ones in the 2009 to 2012, they had tensioner issues most the time and that's why the timing went bad. As far as noise I mean possibly chain slap, or rough idling but you can either take it into get the info or check your tensioner to see how far it pushing.

@@seanh3075 Well mine was two things. To start it was one of my injectors a little clogged up which was causing a very slight misfire at idle but then it started getting worse and a lot more noticeable I thought it was the timing but it ended up being the piston rings were getting so bad it caused a misfire. When I took it in and they tore apart the engine the tops of the two of the pistons were completely black like they had been barely firing. I would do a compression test to make sure that’s not your issue. Hopefully it turns out to be the timing chain or something less than a new engine like it was for me!

@heylucaj5799 interesting. I've looked at top of pistons when i changed the plugs with inspection camera and they look normal. Did you have a lot of carbon build up in intake ports? I have to do a cleaning as mine is pretty bad and i think this may be it. No codes either.

I have a 2010 A4 Quattro Sline that I bought about a month ago, the car is consuming oil really bad like 1qt every 350/400 miles, but the car seems to be working completely fine, no misfires or check engine light, a bit of dark smoke comes from the exhaust under heavy acceleration, the car has 51k miles so I don’t know if I should be worried about the timing chain, at what mileage did you change yours ?, I’m still not 100% sure if I’m going to keep the car because of the oil consumption issue, but I’m just curious to know a bit more about the timing chain, thanks !!
@latenightgarage7895
@latenightgarage7895 2 жыл бұрын
Hey so I changed timing chain around 140xxx I'm at 149xxx now and the cars running great. So I know the pvc valve on top of the valve cover could cause smoke on acceleration, but a big thing I that from 2009 to 2012 they were know to have recalls on the piston rings and timing chain tensioners. Your car could possibly have bad piston rings and letting oil blow by into the cylinder causing smoke and excessive oil consumption. Other than the recalls these cars are wonderful machines. When I was in the market for one I did research and decided the 2013 to 2016 was the best to pick from.
@latenightgarage7895
@latenightgarage7895 2 жыл бұрын
I think the 2009 to 2012 B8 was the first generation of the chain driven motor which had the recalls. In the B7 I think they used the 2.0t belt driven motors. So with the B8 motors they had bugs to fix, which led to the 2013 to 2016 having the second generation chin driven motor and also came with the new face lift making it the B8.5

@@latenightgarage7895 thanks for the reply !, yeah I went to the Audi dealership and they told me about the piston rings and that the total price to fix that would be $9k CAD, and I was like there’s no way I’m paying that for this car, a lot of people is telling me to get rid of the car but I bought it because of the size, it’s the perfect size for me, it’s bigger than a compact car but smaller than a mid size, also because I like the exterior and interior design and I thought it has enough power, also the AWD because I live in Canada, so it the almost perfect car for me, but after looking at how expensive it’s going to be to fix the oil consumption issue I might have to get rid of the car which is really sad because I really like the car, I though about going with an S4 now because it’s more reliable, more power and the engine sounds way better, but after having this experience I’m not sure if I’m going to go for another Audi, I really like BMW’s too but I know people in my family and friends that bought BMW’s and they have many problems and very expensive to fix or maintain and that’s not something that I’m looking into getting right now, so I might have to go with something more reliable probably a G37 or IS350 or even the Acura TL, they are all RWD with the option of AWD, I’m even considering a genesis coupe, I never liked that car at all but a friend bought one and the car is growing on me really fast and I actually like it 😅

@@samwh4775 we actually just got a 2010 S4 and I love the car I'll have videos on it hopefully soon but I'd stay with audi, they have great performance and AWD systems. The G37 AWD is nice but lacks the performance that the S4 has (if your talking about the 3.0t/ supercharger), Depending on your budget I'd pick a b8.5 A4 2.0t over the others bc they still make great power off a stage one tune on a stock motor.

Honestly it depends on how you drive the car, oil maintenance and more. I'd say it's always a good thing to take your car to a shop and have them measure the timing degree, that's what I did when I took mine to Audi to be serviced. Another way is if the car has slow starting, slow response, chain chatter from bad tensioner.

I noticed a slow start up, sluggish, rough idle, and slight noise from the chain. The car can still run, it depends on how many degrees the chain is stretched. This is one of the biggest reasons the motor will jump timing, also do to a bad tensioner, it's kinda a 50/50 between the two.
