Keep in mind that this song and video was recorded three years before "Exit...Stage Left!" These 3 guys were about 26 years old!! And this is 1978!! 💜💜💜

@Out Loud Studios It is also my vote that you search out and hear the original studio recording first. Though this is an "official" video, it is NOT the soundtrack from the album. It is a live performance and it sounds different than the album cut, which makes the point. It's mostly how the intro is done and the production sound difference of not being in the studio. There is absolutely nothing wrong with live cuts but if you want your journey to be similar to ours then you should try to maintain a little bit of chronological order and live cuts are always after the studio cut. There a few songs that got famous as live cuts but they are rare. As far as folks saying 'dude! you gotta check out the live version' well, ok, fine .... AFTER the studio version. Hey man let me tell you that it was really a pleasure seeing you react so positively to the best band the world's ever known. I've been in a bit of a rush funk since January, because whenever I watch it hits me that I'll never get to see them again live. They were my first real concert back on the hold your fire tour, and I've been to all but two since then. I had to miss their very last tour and I'm pretty sure I'm going to regret that for a long time. But seeing someone younger and totally stoked on them, that can recognize their brilliance is a bright spark in a world without the Trinity in place. Thanks!

How unbelievably lucky the world was that these three guys, any one of whom could have made a group magical by themselves, found each other and created their truly amazing library of work. They are so good together because they each were amazing singularly. Just spectacular.

Alex is a great guitarist. He is better than 99% of other players. He gets the short end of the stick only because he's playing in Rush, where Geddy and Neil are so exceptional. He needs to be judged on his own merits, not on the fact that he's not Geddy or Neil (No one is).

James Foster you are correct, but only to a degree. Who else could write, record, produce, perform, and even hang with the likes of Geddy and Neil for over 40+ years? The one and only HRH Lerxst(aka Alex Lifeson)a musicians guitarist. He can not only play any style, but arguably play it better than the considered best of said style.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤🥇🇨🇦😷

He's every bit as good as those guys. He just never chose to be a flashy guitar shredder. Alex always played for the mood and texture of the song. He could switch from sweet melodic playing to full-on, atonal noise bombing in the blink of any eye.

True story... Eddie Van Halen was interviewed in Guitar player magazine back in the late 80/erly 90's he was asked what it feels like to be a guitar god.... he said I don't know, ask Alex Lifeson.

Between the cover which is hands down the greatest cover ever made for a rock album if anyone gets it without having it explained to them then even better. I was one of the ones who didn't understand the three being in one. Which is even perfect for the concept of the three men in the group and one unit. All of them together in unison. And I even love that in most of the beginning of certain concerts they played the Three Stooges theme usually with Alex hitting the last chord of the song in one concert the curtain falls as the chord is stuck.

Whenever I see these reactions video, I ALWAYS recommend to listen to the later stuff too. Headlong Flight is one of their most intense rockers! "Clockwork Angels" is an incredible song. One of my personal favorites is "Vapor Trail". I love the melancholy in that song. "Animate", "Force Ten", "Earthshine", "How it is".... all great stuff. Oh, and "Malignant Narcissism"? Incredible! That one got nominated for a Grammy.

Amen, Carl. The best version of pretty much any song on ESL, is the version on ESL. La Villa and Freewill doubly so - in no small part because Alex’s phenomenal growth and finesse by the time ESL was recorded. This performance is not even close.

You said that right. To me exit stage was their pinnacle of live performances. They were in their prime. Had it banging on all eight cylinders. To me their live stuff was better than the studio. And that's what blows you away. Bcuz your thinking yeah in the studio its easy to make it sound like there are 4 or 5 guys using studio tricks. But then you hear em live and it sounds even better.! I wish some of these reaction guys would go to exit stage left and react to the true magic of rush.

He never said that. That quote is attributed to Jimi Hendrix saying Rory Gallagher was the greatest, but there is no proof that Hendrix ever said that. The quote gets recycled through the years with various guitarists.

Alex Lifeson had to learn early on how to fill out the sound, being in a three piece band. I believe that’s why he evolved into the great rhythm player that he is. Nobody else sounds like him, and I think he’s always been conscious of being sure to sound unique and unlike anybody before him. I’d say he succeeded.

Alex repeatedly proved that a lead guitarist can carry the rhythm perfectly allowing the drum and bass to do incredible things. The band was so much better because of this.

This is the song that showcases Alex's talent. His best solo in my opinion. One of the few that Geddy doesn't take the spotlight away although he is prominent. Just a perfect balance. Neil kills it as usual.

It's an awesome solo (top 5 in my opinion), but I lean toward his best solo as being the one on 2112: Soliloquy. But that one is only "flawed" because it's too damned short.

RUSH, when possible, should always be listened to live. It is just so much more amazing to see them pull off live, and not miss a beat from the studio version.

While I agree (seen them 7 times), one of my favorite songs is one they don't do justice to live, because Alex actually overdubbed some guitar tracks, which he normally doesn't do... The Necromancer.

@@basedbear1605 past two years I can't stop listening to The Necromancer. His guitar work is sublime on that song. From delicate to pounding to ripping to soaring. If you close your eyes you can see the battle right before you. And then that Return Of The Prince outro solo - what a thing of beauty. I tried playing it, it seemed accessible at first, but his phrasing is beyond me even with (seemingly) accurate tab right in front of me. Oh well ... maybe I need a 1974 Gibson ES-335 tobacco sunburst 🤣

I Went to see Pat Travers in the little, dramatic, Warnors theater in Fresno CA. He was opening for RUSH, who I was only vaguely aware of in 78. Hearing this song grabbed my attention, above all others that night however. It alone made me go out and buy my first RUSH allbum , HEMISPHERES the next am!

Kirk, Pat had a beast of a band didn't he? Thrall on guitar, double bass beast Tommy Aldridge on drums...Mars on bass. Must have been a hell of a show for you to see them and then Rush.

@@Kronx1970 It "would have been" except Pat had a HORRIBLE sound problem that night, that I'll never forget. Luckily Tommy's drums weren't effected and he mad up for their loss of a show. He saved it!! It was an amazing contrast in sound when Rush came on. That's what I remember most!

I discovered Rush when I was in 7th grade, 1981. I used to think of them like an electrified orchestral sound. Their music is as complex as any Beethoven or Mozart piece could ever be.

Masters indeed When I went to see them in the 80's and they played this Alex would pour his soul into his guitar but the biggest cheer always went up for Geddy 's little bass solo. 😂😂. Always felt sorry for Alex

I saw them live for both of those concert tours. 14 times in total, including R30, Time Machine (twice), Clockwork Angels and R40. Plus 10 earlier - first one cost $6.

Got to see the last tour with my son who is a huge rush fan. There were families with 3 generations. My first live show was Moving Pictures then Subdivisions tour. This was recorded prior to Neil passing and you can hear the hitch in Geddy's voice when they talk about getting together for dinner. Of course he knew...but no one else need to know. Neil is a hero of mine. The shit he dealt with and still produced magnificent music and rhythms. World's greatest prog rock bands.....and right up there with greatest rock band period.

Alex Lifeson was an underrated guitarist and was not given the recognition he so well deserves. Another Canadian trio that was also a powerhouse was "Triumph" they stared two years later in 1976. Rikk Emmett spoke of Alex Lifeson and praised him for his mastery. Any song from Rush will always blow you away, just like any song from Triumph will also blow you away. Another Canadian rock band of 5 members is April Wine Miles Goodwin was also a master.

Seeing them LIVE through the 80's and 90's was more than a thrill, it was more like a Religious type of experience, including the Grace Under Pressure tour in Dallas at the Iconic Cotton Bowl!! just amazing group of guys!

Just the perfect band. I think the best version of from "Exit Stage Left", but they're all good. I like the version from the Rio show, too. Sick musicianship. Amazing guitarist, bassist/keyboardist, and drummer. Geddy and Alex grew up on the same block. Neil grew up not an hour away. Must be something in that pure Canadian water/beer. #RIPNeilPeart

What non fans don't realize is that in the intro, the low keyboard parts are played by Alex on Taurus pedals. Go and watch the intro ago and you can see him moving to the licks.

When I was in high school, I had friends who were drummers and they would boast all the time about learning to play new songs from Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, etc., but the inevitable question that always came up was 'Yes, but can you play La Villa Strangiato?', that told me everything about who actual drummers thought was the greatest. RIP Neil.

That's my favorite Rush album! Gets next to no love because no radio songs. The Necromancer and Lakeside Park are incredible. Not to mention Bastille Day and Fountain of Lamneth.

I never saw a bad Rush concert; I was out of the country when they were doing their "Clockwork Angels" tour (tried to get tickets for Cologne or Berlin...heck, I even would've gone to Amsterdam! No dice, no tickets!), so I was extremely sad when I learned that this was their last tour. I figured it probably was, but that doesn't mean I wasn't disappointed. I was really saddened to hear of Neil's death on January 7, 2020. Amazing man, amazing lyrics, for an amazing (and my all-time favorite) group. All of the members were consummate professionals, driven by a spirit of excellence. There won't ever be (my wife says can't, and she be right) another band like Rush.

Drummers always assumed that Peart was laying overdubs and multi tracks on the studio cuts for this song, until they saw him live. That’s when he became “the professor.” Wonderful track.

I was privileged to see Rush 16/17 times since the first tour they did in the UK. Since then, they have been my all-time favourite band. I remember reading an interview many years ago when a journalist asked them how they manage to play such true renditions of their songs. The response was that they never wanted to short-change their fans. They made their money out of albums and tours - not singles, fashion and radio promotion. Their fans are everything to them and, understandably, they have one of the largest and most loyal sets of fans. Rush, IMO, is a band where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts - which is incredible as, individually, they are all at the top of their profession. Keep on being amazed.

You got that right..MASTERS. I saw then in b.c ,Canada where i live . I first saw them when i was 16. Saw them 4 times and fell hard. I'm 50 and huge RUSH FAN..they are unreal.

That little groove you commented in is their little homage to Raymond Scott and a song he composed called Powerhouse. If you have ever watched Merry Melodies and Looney Tunes,you will recognize the tune. He didn’t ask for it,but the band paid him royalties for that little bit. Their shows were full of nods to comedic stuff,especially 3 Stooges stuff. They would open with the 3 Stooges theme on some tours.

I think their performance of La Villa on the Rush In Rio dvd is as perfect as a live performance gets. My eyes actually tear up when Alex finishes that solo. Check out the Rush in Rio performance if you get a chance.

I always felt rush was like a musical story. It starts pulls you in you can"t help but expect what's coming next never let you down surprise you always. I love what you said tell someone you are going to play a 12 minute cut, they give you the look. Then play it. They say that was 12 minutes and we all are sad!!! cheers

To me, the longer that an individual musician or a band plays, the better they will become at it, regardless of the instrument or instruments that they play. This is what has puzzled me about a number of my fellow Rush fans. When it comes to live performances of various tunes, why is “the greatest version” SO often said to be one that is, like, 35yrs old? It doesn’t make any sense. Rush was a band that was constantly focused on improving. Improving their command of their instruments, improving their unity, their songwriting, their arrangements. Everything. There is no logic in claiming that Rush could play some given song better in 1983 than they could in 2013. Ok, so “Exit Stage Left” was a great show (and it was) but was a show from one of their last, say, 4-5 tours even better? Absolutely! If that wasn’t true then you would have to say that Rush devolved over time and THAT certainly never happened!!

The 2011 version live from Cleveland is, I think the ultimate version. Geddy kicked us the bass line so hard it is scary. The into is playful and shows they don’t have any hang ups about changes and having fun on stage.

That groove is based upon Powerhouse, by the Raymond Scott Quintette in 1937. You may remember it as the music from Warner Bros. cartoons when they had an assembly line or factory type scene.

A thought came to me; since your set is essentially black, maybe you can shift yourself to a side of the frame when you bring up the band video and position it to the open side so it can be bigger. I like the way you keep the music going and just interject enough reaction comments that it's not interfering with the music. The other channels that keep stopping the music are not as enjoyable.

Another great song from Rush. Thanks for sharing. Love that guitar solo. And the follwing bass n drum chase. I always speed in that part while driving ;-)... Man its one thing to play other ppls songs but to create?! And such accomplished musicians at young age?. I love Rush so much that I love Rush fans too. LOL I mean really. 1 night late after the Rush concert we all hit the road. I mean thousands of ppl poured out of Frank Erwin cent. in Austin yet there was No traffic jam at all!? I drove up I35 doing 80 or more and everyone else was too. No one hogged the left lane lol we all gave each other room and watched out for cops. Rush fans are smart and R good ppl.

Carl Peterson below is absolutely right. This version we're watching here is the "Official" video, but it's NOT the version released on 'Exit... Stage Left'. In my humble opinion, in this version, Alex goes a bit crazy is a few spots, where it's almost too hard to hear WHAT he's playing... However, in the actual Exit... Stage Left release, his performance is so flawless, you hear every note, there's absolutely nothing sloppy about it, and you can sing what he plays because it's so emotive & perfectly phrased. I highly recommend, if you have time, watch this version... then put on some headphones & listen to the track off the album, and you'll see what I mean. I would never say this version doesn't kick ass, but on the album version, Alex takes his guitar mastery to an even higher level... :)

Cool factoid, that cool recurring riff - ba ba ba ba-da-li ba ba was inspired by Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse", written in the 1930s, and also used prolifically in the Looney Tunes cartoons. Cool reaction dude!

Quite possibly the three finest musicians to ever be in a rock band together. Been a huge fan since ‘79, and had the great fortune to see them 13 times between 1981 and 2015. Pure. Magic.
