Recently I listened to this version & Beyonce's version, line for line, back & forth & I much prefer Angelina's version; it's not even close. I also like the piano version more than the music video.

Usually guitar in an orchestra is a featured solo. Guitar is strung, but it isn't played with a bow. Orchestral strings, violin, viola, cello, and bass are all bowed. But I've seen guitar with an orchestra as a featured solo. Angelina Jordan's version is a fresh take. Beyonce's version spoke to that previous generation. This cover by Angelina Jordan is sumptuous. There can be no denying her exquisite voice, her masterful musical talent, her brilliant vocal choices and in this video, as in all of her appearances, her ethereal elegance, her grace and her class. However, as you astutely point out, the other elements of the overall performance should not be overlooked. The way the piano, the cello and the violins are presented, the atmosphere and ambience of the church venue, all greatly add to the elegance and richness of the whole performance and increase the emotional impact of her singing. I think that this is why this version seems to be preferred by so many fans. By the way, a timeless example of guitars functioning within an orchestra can be seen here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ndN4a9hjp724oJc.html. The James Last orchestra does an absolutely beautiful performance here and the guitars, although not as prominently featured as the other strings, play a lovely and vital role.

You're right. The strings make it next level above the level to which Angelina elevated it. I don't give a flip about Beyonce, so Angelina takes it for me. From what he has said, I suspect Toby agrees. FURTHERMORE, I think you are right about at least a violin off camera. She was on stage and on camera in the first live performance a couple weeks before this one was released. For this one, I agree that they should have at least put her in the choir loft where she could be seen and better appreciated. Oh yeah. Good reaction

Both versions of If I Were a Boy contain the same vocal track. Only the instrumentals are different. In the Diaries version her vocals are much more evident as they are not hidden by the instrumentation. The violins in the Diaries version were not present in the church and the cello player on the track was different from the one in the video according to Toby, who is playing the piano.

I don't even think it's close vocally. Listen to them back to back and take your loyalties away. You're lying to yourself if you think Beyonce sounds better. lol

This video allows Toby to reimagine a social dynamic that cowriter B C Jean laid out for him. Beyonce's rendition sounds like a girl that was victimized and Angelina's rendition sounds more like a strong, survivor. I hope that is Toby's goal for all of his songs in the "Piano Diaries".
