Our train had arrived at Štúrovo behind a magnificent steam locomotive 498.104 “Albatros” where it was replaced by diesel locomotive No.T478.1201 for our onward journey to Šahy. The volunteers of the “Akbatros Klub” operate both locomotives along with the carriages that made up our train.
The driver kindly allowed me to place a small camera in the cab so that I can share this ride through the picturesque Slovakian countryside along this little used secondary line, seldom traversed by a locomotive hauled passenger train.
I also found this interesting description for locomotives of this class -
"The earlier versions were nicknamed ‘Bardotka’, Brigitte Bardot, because of the curved front (This reference dates the engines as well as anybody who understands it.) Production series locos have a slightly more square appearance and are referred to as 'Grumpies' based on them having a somewhat grumpy facial expression".
I’m not sure whether to call our locomotive ‘Bardotka’ or 'Grumpy' or settle for “Grumpy Bardotka”, but clearly her crew looked upon her with a great deal of affection. I’ve rambled on long enough, please get comfortable and enjoy the ride.
