Whilst visiting the railways around Interlaken, I noticed some curious looking diminutive electric locomotives wobbling along, pushing two carriages next to the Interlaken to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen railway line. Today was the last day these little trains ran before the line closed for winter, the sun was shining and I had a few hours to spare, so I made my way to Wilderswil, the start of the line to learn a little more. The train was about to leave, so I took a seat in the front coach, where the lovely lady driving the train allowed me to place a camera in the front window. Please join me for this highly scenic trip, as our train climbs through the golden autumn trees to the lofty heights and amazing views from the Schynige Platte railway.

Thank you so much Tim. I can think of no better way to end the day than to strap on a camera to the front of a cog train and meander my way up through some of the most gorgeous scenery in all the world. So appreciate you making this possible.

Hi Paul, that's a great description for a ride on this little train. If I worked on this railway, I am sure I would regard every day spent taking tourists along this highly scenic line as a day well spent. Bet they don't have trouble with the poor industrial relations that plague Britain's Southern railway.

Incredible scenery in one of the most beautiful countries on earth. Most would have no clue what a cog railway was. Educational and esthetically pleasing. Nice job.
@algrayson8965
@algrayson8965 4 жыл бұрын
Cog railways are also called “rack” railways after the rack gear that is between the running rails. Many use adhesion (no rack) for the less sloped track sections, reserving the rack gear for the steep grades. Several types of racks are used on different railways. Different rack systems: Riggenbach, Strub, Abt, Locher and Lamella. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The Riggenbach, Strub and Lamella racks have the same size and pitch (spacing) of gear teeth (cogs), so they can be mixed on the same system, and the locomotives have pinions that can engage with all three types of racks. The first rack railway used the Blekinsop system, having the rack on the outer side of one rail. Blekinsop didn't believe that adhesion (friction) would allow the full power of the locomotive to be used. He was right, but the rack and gear (pinion = gearwheel on the locomotive) is very expensive and suitable only for low speeds, so simple adhesion is the standard for almost all railroads. Modern electric (diesel-electric locomotives have electric motors driving the axles) locomotives have automatic traction control, which reduces power to any wheelsets that slip.

What sort of tossers give work like this the thumbs down? Perhaps they don't like the fact that it's in real time, no frills ...but that makes the experience all the more authentic. Hi, the area around Interlaken is a Mecca for lovers of narrow gauge railways, as for the thumbs down, we simply have to accept that given a choice a few people will hit the thumbs down, that's life, most people simply stop watching if they are not enjoying it. I'm delighted it bought back good memories from your own visits to the region and maybe you will get to make that forth trip. Take care. Tim.

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I love Swiss engineering and the guys in the loco works are usually happy to show people round if they are not too busy. Your channel name "Swarf Rats" intrigued me as I'm usually in my workshop creating swarf and hopefully a few components as well, although today I'm cylindrical grinding actuating pins for a mould tool I'm making. I took a look at your channel to see if it was likely metal swarf inspired the name, sure enough there are a few machining videos. I have often wondered whether it would be worthwhile to make a video covering component concept through to watching the finished mould tool working in the press? the nearest I have come to making a video is showing a few shots of stuff I've made and one or two of my machines at work in a video about a 3D printer I'd bought - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nMyCZLF43bDXnqM.html I have been taking photos and a few short video clips of the tool I'm making at the moment, as it is the first time I've decided to put one of my own ideas into production, I'm usually doing it for other people. I love engineering, but I've never been sure whether it is something people would watch on KZfaq. Thanks again for your comment, it is appreciated.

To the Swiss, the view from the top of a mountain is something they want to share with the world and a railway is a great way to get people to the top. Switzerland has a love affair with its railways, making it a great place to visit for railway enthusiasts and tourists alike. Their love of all things engineering really shows on their awesome mountain railways, both in the way the lines are engineered and the wonderful locomotives that operate them.

This amazing video could be a dictionary definition of "slower pace of life"...even the birds liked to play tag with the train - 7:17 - and I loved the begonias in the flower box - 12:21! The crawling pace of the cog train compels you to relax your muscles and feel tension melt away, while you patiently enjoy the magnificent scenery slowly pass by. The railway could almost be a footpath through the forest and meadows (29:48), and enjoying the beauty from the train is about the same as if you were walking the same path...you feel you could reach out and touch the trees, breathe in the fragrance of the leaves, and listen to the silence of the autumn forest. After watching numerous fantastic cab ride videos (some of them yours, Tim!) at speeds up to 160 km/hr, this is an absolutely refreshing change of pace. Thank you for making the effort to catch "the last cog train on the last day of the season" and treating all of us to this wonderful video! Cheers!

Hi Stan, I enjoyed reading your comment, there is a lot to be said for taking life at a slower pace, especially when the scenery is as beautiful as that seen from the Schynige Platte Railway. It amazes me the things these visionary people achieved, they took massive financial risks, building incredible mountain railways using new, often unproven technology. The fact that it still runs today, using much of the original equipment is a real testament to the engineers who built the line and provided the traction. Thank you for taking time to comment, it is appreciated. Tim.

Hi, its amazing to see what our forefathers achieved, the little locomotives wobbling along the tracks, the overhead pantograph look like a piece of flimsy metal balanced on the locomotive, it only made contact with the wire half the time, the compartment in front of the one I was travelling in was reserved for paracenders with their chutes. The Alpine garden at the top, it was a most enjoyable and memorable trip.

@@docman6157 Hi, I studied French and Italian at school, our head teacher was Italian. It is so rare I get the chance to use either language these days, I've forgotten most of what I learned, fortunately most of the Swiss people I meet speak reasonable English. I have also travelled in and around Switzerland by both road and rail on numerous occasions, the transport system is so good, most places can be reached without the use of a car, I also find the Swiss to be very friendly and helpful. I love to watch the trains come and go at Bern station, I can watch the back of one long double deck train leaving with the next already entering the platform. I wish the Swiss ran Britain's railways. Bons voyages. Tim.

What always amazes me is here railtrack or is it now network rail look after track etc and different TOCs then blame each other for all our problems. @Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 4 жыл бұрын
@@docman6157 Hi, travel is a great way to learn, I don't think those responsible for our roads and railways have ever left the county they live in !!! The Swiss work together, whether private or public, they take pride in a job well done. I looked this up, you might find it interesting - www.globalrailwayreview.com/article/663/high-levels-of-mechanisation-in-swiss-track-maintenance/ I live on England's South coast, where I drive between Portsmouth and Southampton regularly using the M27, currently it is being converted to a smart motorway, it is taking forever, there is millions of £’s worth of plant sitting idle doing nothing, this also happened before the virus took hold. In Switzerland and Austria, all the plant would be working 24 hrs a day and the job gets done efficiently to a good standard in a reasonable timescale. I just wonder how it is we get it so wrong. In the sixties motorways were built with a breakdown lane, that is now being replaced with a fourth lane, there will be carnage as a result, when a lorry tyre blows and there is nowhere for it to go. Have you watched the Swiss repair a pothole? it is done with a rolling road block, first all the loose stuff is removed and the hole is routed out with a back taper so that the replacement material will be keyed in, then hot tar is used to seal the surfaces inside the hole, the new tarmacadam is then shovelled in and rolled level, It takes a team of 4 under 10 minutes to fill a large pot hole. In the UK the road is closed with diversions set up through residential roads, nothing happens for a week, because those who set up the diversion and those doing the work do not work together, finally the pot hole gets filled by simply shovelling tarmacadam in and rolling it without any preparation, as a result 6 months later it needs doing again. Sometimes I’m embarrassed by the way a modern British company is run, in my youth it was all done by the local council. I would love to do a TV program about Southern Region trains in the sixties, they were all compatible, the stockpile of spares was kept to a minimum because they all used the same English Electric traction equipment, today Britain has trains from all over the world, often manufactured in short run bespoke batches, can you imagine the stockpile of spares that will be required to keep them running in the future. In the past engineers learned their trade as apprentices working alongside highly skilled craftsmen, today they go to University where a lecturer who is both out of date and out of touch attempts to teach a bunch of disinterested pupils to do the job. They leave university with a big debt and no usable skills, maybe I am a bit cynical, but I can’t help thinking something has gone terribly wrong with this once great engineering nation of ours.

Thanks for this. It's a nice view from this railway. And now I know something I didn't know before: How the points work on a rack railway of this design. :) I had to look closely at a photograph on Wikipedia but I could see there that the rack is actually somewhat higher in profile than the rails, meaning that the moving pieces of the rack go over the top of the rails at the points (or are moved away from atop the rails to allow the wheel for that rail to pass between the racks)

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Watching the turn-out switch tracks at 13:29 is interesting. Logically the cog wheel has to be above rail level to avoid problems as it passes over the running rails at turn-outs and diamond crossings. Rack railways certainly tested the abilities of engineers to find solutions to awkward problems. Carl Roman Abt may have passed away, but his legacy will live on as long as rack railways continue to exist.
