Before tackling the playability issues, I started with making this vintage Japanese Archtop look like a million bucks.

I had one of these back in the 1960's. It was my first guitar purchased from Woolworths under the brand name of Audition, along with a little solid state amp that clipped onto the top of the speaker cabinet, a sort of mini stack. Thanks Tim that has brought back some wonderful memories.

I saved a similar guitar to this last year, just with 2 Mosrite-size really low output humbuckers. I think it had been hung on a bar wall for a couple of decades as it was completely stained with nicotine. Soap is indeed your friend. Also watched your later video - may have to redo the neck pocket in a similar way if I want to use it with the flatwounds I put on - it had better action with smaller gauge strings than it does now.

I bought one very very similar about a year ago. It looks to be the same body style. The top and back look about the same but mine has a sunburst on the sides as well. Mine only has 2 pickups, but they look exactly the same with the same switching system. I had to shim up the neck to get the action right but once I did the neck was very playable, kinda chunky. The thing I find the most interesting about it is that it's a full hollow body, not a semi-hollow like a ES335. I really got excited when I saw this video posted! Not a whole lot of information about this guitar anywhere so it's very nice to see more people with one. Fujigen Gakki makes guitars for some very popular companies. I own a few Ibanez guitars made by Fujigen.

Like you mentioned Fujugen Gakki is the factory the guitar was built. Distributor's would stick whatever badge on the headstock so with these 60s Japanese guitars you see loads of different names but the important thing is the factory! Often it's easiest to tell the factories apart from the pickup design.

It’s looking good! I’ve cleaned up many old junk sale guitars and found that domestic and car cleaning products work really well, the label remover stuff you can buy from discount stores etc is great for removing stickers. I once bought a DeArmond M65 guitar which was absolutely covered with stickers for £5 and spent about 2 hours and a bottle of label remover cleaning them off. After a polish with car wax the guitar looked very good., I still have it. In extreme circumstances I’ve found that colour restoring auto polish works miracles for very little effort. I’m looking forward to the next instalment of this job as I’m very envious of that old guitar.

That looks a bit like one an Uncle had that came with a case that was also the amp. My dad has/had one that looked like a red Strat, and I can't recall if he got in while in Japan or not (Navy tour), but it was from the early '60's

Thanks for demonstrating that everything doesn't need to be a "strip it down to bare wood" restoration. Sometimes they just need a good bath. A friend of mine recently rewired a hollow body bass. Was a huge pain trying to do that work within those constraints. Lucky for you the electronics just needed a little cleaning themselves. Thanks for sharing!

My guideline is, least aggressive first: warm water, then maybe a bit of soap, then (making proper allowance for finish) naphtha. If any of that cleans the gunk off, it's not patina or "mojo", it's just accumulated scmutz, and it needs to go.

Personally I'd fill in the neck pocket and re route it to be perfect. The very tips would need some binding adding due to the current large gaps but that's no big deal. Hardest bit would be matching the paint on the tiny bits added to make the neck snug but again not too tricky as it'd only be a small area. Nothing I hate seeing more then an ill fitting neck pocket

Can you think of a good DIY home way of doing the opposite? Ie, making new chrome parts look old and faded? I have a couple of really old cheap Japanese guitars. I love them dearly, but they are pretty much worthless, which is fine by me. Only problem is when I buy new parts for them, they are chrome while the old parts are beautifully faded. I would love to find a way to make newer parts match their counterparts without just sanding them down, which is pretty hit and miss.

A nest of little birds had hatched in my window sill, under an air conditioner, and I set up the bass and mic next to the window and recorded there, so the birds are part of the ballad. Another luthier that doesn't know the difference between a tremolo and a vibrato... [sigh]. But yes, a little soap and water, applied with a toothbrush is always a good first move. FRET WIRES. The frets are the spaces between... Nice job though.
@timsway
@timsway 3 жыл бұрын
Can you sat that all again, but write "well, actually" first?:) Jk. I have a pedantic streak, too, so much so I would never call myself a luthier as I lack the formal training. I "make guitars." But I usually don't worry about coloquial speech. The most important part of communication is to be understood. Of course there's a debate to be had about the digression of language and how it relates to knowledge, truth and facts, but come on, were talking about a "wang bar." :)
@valvenator
@valvenator 3 жыл бұрын
Someone should have told Leo Fender about that vibrato vs. tremolo thing, than maybe he would have made some decent instruments :) ...and that's the first time I heard the spaces between the frets being called frets. That would mean a fretless guitar would have no neck? Actually it's called a fretboard isn't it? Fret wire is what is used to make the frets.
@timsway
@timsway 3 жыл бұрын
@@valvenator Oh the pedantry runs deep! LOL. I'm not sure which particular thing I said, I probably misspoke (which happens often in my videos as i try to speak very quickly to keep them moving). I think we all know the metal bits are the frets and the spaces between are not, even first-day guitar students. But since I'm also pedantic I'll bite. Indeed the spaces between are called frets quite often! First, for a general term I would prefer to call it a fingerboard as not all of them have frets but all of them use fingers (even slide guitars, as fingers hold the slides. I spent most of my career playing fretless instruments.) I've had people call me out on that term, too, saying "no, it's a fretboard" which I just chalk up to ignorance... But back to the point, if one were teaching someone to play a C chord, one would say "put your third finger on the third fret of the A string...." What they actually mean is "put your finger on the fingerboard in the spaces between the second and third fret but as close to the third fret as possible and maybe even touching it a little, but not so much the flesh of your finger surpasses it to touch the space in between the third and fourth fret." Because we put our fingers on the fingerboard, not the frets. But this is too long, so we commonly say "put your finger on the third fret." Or one might say "play the barre chord on the seventh fret" and you already pictured exactly what I mean, but in reality the chord you are playing relies heavily on the index finger being placed between the 6th and 7th frets with other fingers involved on the 8th and 9th frets! - OOPS there I go again!! I mean the spaces before the 8th and 9th frets ... :)
