From a 32 year olds perspective that was really into gaming, and not as much anymore. I was told a few years ago, that life seems to go by faster the older you get. And the reason is you don't have as many "Firsts". Usually you remember the first time you do a certain thing. Drive a car, go to school, first girlfriend, ETC. You don't have as many firsts as you get older. The same could be said for gaming. When we were all younger experiencing all these new games for the first time, it was exciting, new, and fun. First time beating a game, first time getting together with your friends to play, first time playing a game online. We got older, its not as exciting anymore because we have experienced it all. Yea we still have good times in the moment, but not like our FIRST time. Our generation may feel that gaming isn't as fun anymore. But for the young kids out there, they may be having the time of their lives like we once did.

I 100% agree with this sentiment. I'm 38 and I've been gaming since I was 3. I find myself playing more and more single player less competitive games because I'm constantly getting angry with trying to compete with hyper sweaty players. Not to mention all the unfinished games coming out lately. Great video!

I’ll never get back the feeling of turning on Black Ops 1 for the first time… grinding… or MW2 search and destroy lobbies with my best friends. Everybody mic’d up with a goal to get KZfaq famous. It’s a type of nostalgia that is only relatable to how our parents talked about a time before internet. Truly a golden age, and moments forever missed. I feel that gaming isn't casual anymore. It's main focus back in the day was to play and have fun. Now-a-days its turned into a profession/ career about content creation and who can have the best clip or most kills, which made multiplayer games very competitive/ sweaty. If no one streamed/ or posted video's, and made no money playing, I guarantee the fun would come back because gaming would become casual again.

Started playing games when I was probably 8-9, and I’m 26 now. I’ve come to a point now where I don’t necessarily play game like COD or Fortnite for fun. I play them to interact with my friends. The game itself is just an outlet to spend time with my boys who all live in different parts of the country

Jak and Daxter, Cod Modern warfare 4 , and Kingdom Hearts were the pinnacle of gaming days.

The problem is that social media and influencers don't play solo adventure games and have stuck to battle royals so the discourse has turned into "games are boring", when in reality they are not even scratching the surface of all the great games that have come out throughout the years

The reason gaming isn't fun anymore is because developers see gamers as cash cows instead of consumers of an artform.

I will never forget back in the day hopping on black ops 2 or black ops 3 with all the boys and just playing all night without having to worry about finishing a battle pass or finding the money to buy the best operator skin. Those were the prime gaming days and I don't think we will ever see it again. Another one of those you don't know what you had until you lose it moments.

It’s because gaming went from being about working together and making friends into who can have the best aim, put in the most time, and who has the fastest decision making. The skill gap on most games now days is insane and makes players without a lot of time to play a lot less likely to have fun/succeed at the game. Also player bases are way more rude and toxic than ever. Ultimately it’s a people problem

Gaming is quite fun when you're not just playing COD and other multiplayer games the whole time. I'm currently playing The Witcher 3, and I've never enjoyed gaming as much as I do now.

Super smash bros N64/gamecube, MLB 98 PS1, Goldeneye N64....so many hours played and no regrets. The tourneys, the competition amongst friends, the 2 liters downed, the chips crunched, the parents yelling at us to keep it down, oh the memories.

This is it exactly what I’ve been going through with multiple games. I was born in 1990 I think Tim is around my age it was a relief hearing his input because I thought it was just me. Amazing video this guy put together it’s worth the watch if you’re just feeling games lately! Personally to me it’s not just the games that made the most impacts on me but more of the connection / bonding & human interaction while playing split screen / lan tournaments & getting friends to jam with after school. I truly believe as I’ve said in my most enjoyable fun times playing & streaming has been finding awesome people in lfg’s or in game chats you never know when you could meet your best friends like I have. I've been saying for years that modern social media is destroying games, social media tells people to hate certain games & people listen, KZfaqrs/steamers have evolved the competitive community which isn't bad but it also causes a lot of issues for the average player just wanting to play a couple games a day and all the posts showing off the newest skins to buy that waste your money and can be removed from game at any point

Man I remember being at a YMCA summer camp and torwards the end the counselors let me bring my PS2 to hook it up to the screen in the activity room for the last week. Me and 10 of my good friends whom I’m still friends with today played Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 every day and never got bored for even a second. It’s definitely the people connection that was the fun part. Not necessarily the online connection, but the in person connection of someone else on your couch with you, or in your house “lan parties”. Good times man

Battlepass meta was started by the only game that did it right. Dota 2. It wasnt designed to hook in players. They used it to fund their professional scene. It was called compendium at 1st then battle pass.

Tim, you need to do so, like solo games. Just get away from the loudness and anger of online games. So, I intentionally left solo games very open-ended. Anything goes or let fans decide in a vote whatever. Just something new, and hopefully, you will find excitement.

People need to get out of their comfort zone from time to time discover new genres, it will help them enjoy their favorites games more and discover new games that they may fall in love with

I think gaming today is more tiring and draining. There are many times it just feels like work. With daily/weekly/monthly objectives tied to content, they're relying so heavily on that FOMO feeling to keep people trapped. If you don't play, you can't complete the objectives. If you don't complete the objectives, you don't get the rewards. If you don't get the rewards, you can't get new content (without paying). If you don't get new content, you can't compete. If you can't compete, don't bother. It's exhausting, and creates a system where you play the same game for hours a day for months on end. That's not a game. That's a job.

I know a game that's free to play, called Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt. It's a vampire battle royale game that has a free battle pass. The game doesn't use real money anymore instead you get the tokens from the battle pass and when you're done with the battle pass. The game gives you more tokens for the game's shop. So it really is a free game, the problem is that the crossplay wasn't finshed when the developers stopped development so PS5 can only team up with PS5 and PC with PC. The same Studio that developed the game is also making Exoborne right now.

The problem for me is no game feels new anymore. Every game I play these days (bar a few indie games) all feel like they've copied each other and just changed it slightly. The joys of gaming 15 years ago, everything felt new and fresh, and exciting because of that.

I bought one of those kit things that slid over the screen that magnified it and also lit it up and had foldable speakers that came out to the side and I can remember playing tetris pokemon and supermario and man those memories make me feel like I havent had that much fun with games since then. Don't get me wrong I love a lot of games today but just not the same.

Just beat Pokémon red the other day for the first time in over 10 years. The feelings I got loading in and selecting my Pokémon and then when I beat the final bosses have not been felt since playing PS2 games. Gaming will never be the same.

In my opinion, a big portion of why multiplayer games are not as fun. Is the introduction of sbmm, in literally everything now. Like think about how games have 2 modes (ranked) and (public matches) but pubs has sbmm. Essentially turning the "casual" part of the game into a ranked 2.0. If I wanted to try extremely hard and want to slam my nuts repeatedly on a table and get mad, I would just play ranked. And to cool down and actually enjoy doing things like troll people or try fun stuff for content or, to simply have fun.. You should have a no sbmm pub mode. Everything about multiplayer gaming has turned into a competitive warfare of bs.

yeah, welcome to what some of the older crowd were saying years and years ago. the moment that everything started moving to even play the disc for a single player game, that you had to be connected to some server to even play, was the moment we realized it was going downhill. The required update on day of release, or week of release, was just evidence to the issue.

I've never been so connected and so alone. As a kid it was Lan parties, link cables, and social. Today it's distant. There is no face to face.

Pokémon on Nintendo was my first ever 'game'. 91' baby here and I remember this, second generation Pokémon (Gold and Silver). After this, upgraded to a PlayStation and got Ape Escape which I couldn't get enough of, then into the Ratchet and Clank series and I have memories of me sitting in my room, on the floor against my bed, TV on the floor, basking in the sun, and grinding the latter for hours on end! Good times.. 😃

Gaming died for me when it was grinding and grinding - I don't always commit THAT many hours anymore (since having kids etc) and if you aren't grinding you are shit. Combine that with paying for things - it's just frustrating. I remember playing the same maps over and over in COD4 Modern Warfare and it was just a blast. No skins, no skins on characters. Just fun! I miss those days

As a content creator myself I refused to buy battle passes. If I can’t earn it in game I don’t bother. I’ve been giving the AAA gaming companies the middle finger for years. I am glad everyone is waking up to start doing the same.

One reason is the availability of information. You can essentially know everything about the game before it even comes out. That takes the sense of wonder/adventure out of games.

What i would say is this. 2023 was one of the best years in gaming, and ppl were still saying "gaming is dead." "Gaming is stale." Some ppl think like that because they play NOTHING but fortnite, roblox, Cod, 2k, and Madden and never play nothing else. Microtransactions are part of the reason gaming is as fun because the good stuff is hidden behind a battle pass or a pay wall they only give u half the game at full price. Esports i think has some compulbility because everyone wants to be some sweaty pro player and try extra hard. There is no way to separate those type of ppl(one who play all day dont wash they AS or touch grass and still a virgin) and a person who comes home from 9 to 5 and just want to relax hope on a game for a few minutes. Plus they give this idea they the esports players make money and in reality they don't. I think content creator to some degree has made gaming not AS fun. I say because kids(especially the dumb A**es of this generation) are easily influenced, and if they favorite content creator ONLY plays 1 particular game, what do u think the kid gonna do. I also think the content creators are so focused on their view count that they are afraid to try different stuff, but its not viral, or its not a game that "trending." They are so quick to pick a game that will get their views up instead of playing a game cause what THEY actually like. Thats why i content creators should have 2 sets of games; a set of games for streaming and content and a set of games that they on their own time because they PERSONALLY enjoy it. NOT for the views, not for the click, but they can enjoy themselves. I also think what happens is because of gaming becoming more mainstream to the point that it crossover with other media plus the demand for top of line graphics that it cost money for that type of the game the consumer want so the devs had to turn to the suits. The suits dont care about the consumer wants they just want the money and they no the gaming consumer will pay extra because we live in a generation where ppl especially gamers are afraid to be left out, "excluded" and wants to be "included" so badly. I remeber it was ok to a in the middle game like those b tier games that in the bargsin bins in the store. Nowadays it has to peak S tuer level or a game is dog dookie.

In my opinion the biggest issue is the all the sbmm and sweaty lobbies being the ONLY option for a ton of games. Having a sweaty ranked system and then an actual casual normal system where you don’t need to try so hard would be majorly beneficial. I’m a competitive person and i love being competitive but there’s times when i wanna play a FPS and not have to sweat just to have a good game, so to me there NEEDS to be an option between casual and sweaty because both have important roles and nearly every FPS shooter nowadays has moved to only sweaty options which gets very stale, even to someone competitive

I have quit playing COD, Battlefield, R6S, and pubg. All of the games instituted some form of pass, and pay to win/ pay to get cool stuff metric. I have always loved camo challenges on COD, unlocking all weapons on Battlefield, or hitting max rank on Siege. Now it seems that the games are either centered around having to no life it to unlock what you want, or put in a credit card. I recently fell in love with Escape from Tarkov, but now I’m realizing that many of the in game challenges require more time than I have to offer. I think that’s the biggest thing for me getting older. At 14 all I had was school and games, now at 28 I have a career, wife, and 2 kids. There is no way I can prioritize my career and family while trying to no life some of these games to keep up. Family is always first, but when you hop on a game 3 days after a wipe, and die to a chad that’s level 24 it makes it less enjoyable to me at least. Anyways, love the content, and I’ll always love gaming. Just my two cents, peace and love

I don't think anything has changed in game other than companies had business practices. I've been gaming for 35+ yrs and I can honestly say that while bad practices from companies have dirtied the industry, gaming still hasn't lost its magic. From high end simulators to walking simulators I'm still in awe of the art of games.

Man I feel horrible for people who love video games but don’t enjoy them anymore for whatever reason is valid for them. I’m 36 and have been gaming my entire life. There’s never been a moment I didn’t love it or had something I didn’t love playing. Imo gaming has never been more enjoyable. So many awesome things to play and grind.

I think people forget, gaming has always been meant to be a break or escape from reality. Never become people’s actual reality. Coming inside from playing whiffle ball for 7 hours capping it off with an hour or two of gaming created memories. Reverse it, spend 7 hours in a game and an hour or two of playing outside, it’s not fun anymore.

I feel like a lot of the problem nowadays is how sweaty we all are all the time on games now. I remember being a teenager playing bo2 and i could just goof off and have fun trying challenges like melee only and stuff and not just get dumpstered the entire time, but then i could decide i wanna go crazy and use my goat loadout and dominate a lobby if i wanted to. Now we all just sweat the entire time, to the point that now if you try to just goof off doing some stupid or terrible strat in a multiplayer game your probably gonna get rolled the entire time unless your in bot lobbies. Hell most multplayer games i cant even play with my friends that arent good at games, because they cant hang and just get deleted the entire time.

Ommmg I thought I would be just old but I loved jedi outcast aswell and cs 1.6, cod2 and all those games when I was a kid... it somehow to me was a different lvl of gaming I also can't tell why.. I was also pretty much known in a few servers on jedi outcast maybe we played once idk hehe crazy stuff man.

consoles and dlc was where it started...pc had expansion packs to games that were alot bigger then dlc's that started on consoles

People keep saying, "Oh it is just nostalgia, you've gotten older." How can that be the case when I had fun with Cuphead, a relatively newer release? How could I enjoy Jedi Fallen Order & Survivor? How could I enjoy Cyberpunk 2077? RDR2? There are great games, that are newer, they're just rare. I had a great time just recently beating Dragon's Dogma 2... It isn't JUST nostalgia...

I'm a little older than you and most people here. I started on black and white pong. But my most fond memory of video gaming was on socom 2 US Navy seals on PlayStation 2. The first time you can actually talk to people you were playing with. I was in my twenties doing full-time concrete during the day I'm staying up until 4:00 in the morning or later getting mostly 2 to 3 hours of sleep for over a year. I made friends doing that, that I still have today from all over the country and world. Games today aren't really built to create camaraderie. Imo

One thing that’s been ruining games for me is how the skill gap for things is becoming huge. To even have a chance in finding I have to constantly sweat in every game instead of just casually playing. If I don’t sit and try and sweat, I’m not even getting kills or having fun.

Firstly. Its important to play the right games. I cant play the sane game too much. Other than that on the outside there are fun games you just have to find them. Recently there have been fewer titles that im really willing to pickup. A couple really good games a year is all i need. Like 3 or 4 solid titles. But i definitely dont play everything but ive played a lot of stuff. Helldivers, Final Fantasy, Maybe some other stuff that hasnt been announced yet or is not quite there yet but i mean.

The part TIMTHETATMAN was talking about when he played with friends and enjoyed it. ... Those were also the days of dedicated servers. You would go and play on your favorite servers with your friends and if there were anyone on the server spoiling the moments they would get kicked or banned. Now p2p connection harder to get those monitored properly instead of dedicated server owners. so to keep you wanting to play with that scenario is then achievements. How do you think dedicated servers and more custom game modding after words would effect the gaming community again? I remember quake 3 and making maps and models for others to download for free as we were all doing it as a hobby. No money from it just pure enjoyment. So you easily bought those games at the time for $60 even back then. Only mods that cost money back then were huge updates like quake 3 team arena which if you look back at it the clan arena appears to be more from the rocket arena 3 mod. Those are the days though that I miss. I still enjoy games and playing them with people but there is a disconnect in there compared to 25 years ago.

Since 2021, I came to terms with the empty feeling gaming brought me. Nights online turned into moments that made me break down. I loved gaming, but it became hollow. So, I switched to a non-gaming PC and removed the consoles. It took two years, but detoxing was worth it. If you feel the same, consider this change. You won't regret it. 🙌💻❤️

First "Battle Pass" was in Dota 2 and was called a Compendium. It was $10 and it was a way of crowdfunding a portion of the prize pool for The International. That is like Worlds is for League. A Valve sponsored, once a year LAN tournament in a huge arena and it was a way to get the whole player base to support the professional scene. Oh and the Compendium had legitimately SICK character skins to level up and earn. So the justification was super easy: Play FREE moba game for literally THOUSANDS of hours, pay $10/year to support game and pro players, get awesome skins to the use the rest of the year, repeat. Was a great system until the other publishers *cough* ACTIVISION started putting the idea into $60 games and completely sucked the soul out of gaming.

There is no reason why we can’t still have cheat codes and mods for single player games. Devs just don’t give a damn anymore.

I took a Hiatus from gaming from whenever advanced warfare came out until the new MW2. I know a lot of people did not. Coming back to a console got me really excited. Sure it's different than before. I think the connections with friends, and the competition is really what makes gaming fun. At least for me. And now that I've hooked back up with my friends who play, it's fun, and it hasn't gotten old yet.But was also keeps it fun is chasing achievements.
