Have you ever gone back and reviewed one of your old PLC programs? A popular request is for us to share PLC programming examples and explain the PLC programming methods used and what can be improved. If we are going to critique programs, then might as well start with my very first ladder logic program. It is a RsLogix 500 program for the SLC 500 PLC.

Glad it was helpful. Always remember, the most complicated task can be broken down into simple steps.

Tim, manuals are STILL the missing link for technicians looking for answers. If techs aren’t able to find a video these days they are ready to give up!!

I agree, a lesson in how to use the find button in a pdf wouldn't hurt :)

This was very good compared to a lot of the so basic teaching out there... And the breaking the program up into workable chunks helps a future programmer to more easily follow your logic, as well as you years later. Much can be done to simplify programs such as the JSR's (Subroutine calls) and Step logic helps us "see" which portion of a process is going on at the moment. I also really like the Monitor rungs for diagnostics. To me, this is easier than looking at a data table to see what is a one or a zero. "Green" means on and helps my brain deal better than seeing a one. I have seen programs that have a monitor rung at the top of each main task, although they can be placed elsewhere. Also a note to Newbies, that if you give a description and also a symbol to each major item, then the 500 items kind of act like a tag, where once you start typing the symbol, it will self populate just like 5000 tags. Thanks Tim!

That was a neat video. Thanks. One thing I noticed in RS Logix 500 is that you can comment individual blocks. Is this doable is Studio 5000? I have tried doing that, but when I right click on something like a MOV and make a comment it just puts the comment on the first variable instead of the block itself (problematic when the variable is used in many places). I would love to comment just /why/ I am doing something. Am I missing something? Thanks. Come to think of it, a video on good PLC documentation might be nice to have.

You cannot comment "individual blocks" or instructions in either RsLogix 500 or Studio 5000. You can only comment data table addresses or tags which is what you are seeing. What you can do is comment the rung. Right click the rung number and you'll see the option.

There is a free version for the Micrologix 1000 and 1100, but if learning today, I would recommend looking at Connected Components Workbench for the Micro800 PLC. See link below. twcontrols.com/lessons/where-can-i-download-allen-bradleys-connected-components-workbench-for-the-micro800
