Don't paint grey, lifeless shadows. Get some color into them to make your sunny paintings more interesting. This video is a based on a street scene (Bergerac in France) and focuses on thinking about shadows as a very important part of watercolor and helping with the range of values in your picture.

In this demo I will be covering...
1) Choice of Subject. What makes a good watercolor subject. How to simplify the scene. Why are shadows important.
2) Materials I use such as the paper. I will also cover the paints I use and the palette, plus how I hold the different brushes for different techniques.
3) Doing the outline sketch as the first step. How to draw figures and cars.
4) Doing the sky and the first wash of the background and then the foreground.
5) Shadows and more shadows. Introducing color as the paint is still damp.

Very nice and great pedagogical approach. Thank you very much Tim. One small suggestion : It would help if we could see more often the reference photo. Perhaps bottom left When you are painting top right or vice-versa. Thanks, Gilbert front Lyon,France

You are an actual wizard, Mr Wilmot! Every time I watch one of your demonstrations, I sit in awe of your vision and your skill in bringing that vision to life. While I don't always like the look of loose watercolors, yours seem to always turn out quite nice. Thank you so much for sharing your prodigious talent!

Up until 30 minutes in I would have crumpled my paper as a fail. Quite the opposite. Incredible style Tim! You taught me that I underestimate the minds ability to decipher our environment. And less is more. I think you're a remarkable artist. Thank you very much for this lesson.

I hear a lot about the "ugly stage" every painting has to go through, so even if it seems like a disaster at the moment, you still have to try and finish it; maybe it'll look alright at the end.

Thanks a lot Sir. Its incredible. Its like watching a movie where all the actors are introduced in the beginning and while we are wondering, slowly building the character of each in relation to the story and finally bringing all characters together in an amazing climax. Wonderful.

The finished final version is a hell of a lot different than when you said, "That's it..." I like how you made it more colorful and put in more details in the cars,, people and the intensity of the colors. I wish you would have explained why you thought to change it so much.

Common mistakes is to automatically assumed that since shadows are darker, well they might also be less saturated... Well you couldn't be farther the truth . There are instances where shadows are less saturated but it principally to capture a mood or a certain feel, well in fact..... You would just have( assuming it's a white sky) The true colors of the object showing of into the shadow area Since shadows are contrast Now let s take the blue sky.. In this example . There is a yellow sun and a blue sky .. What we perceive as shadows are only the areas which weren't affected by the bright yellow light of the sun therefore making It appear darker ,when in reality all you see in the shadows is just the ambiant lighting . Since light always overpower the ambiant light which, right now , is our blue. Then the blue will only shows off into the shadows/ ambiant areas where the strong light haven't touched the surface . So when you put the true colors of the subject ,you can add a small amount of that bue into the colors 😝 No light ,no shadows . Exemple ,if you have added light into your work then you wouldn't have to put the accent on the shadows since you created the shadows by contrast . The inverse is also true, if you place the shadows then the light areas will pop by contrast...

Hi Tim, a small question about your palette. Do you use freshly squeezed paint for each painting or do you just keep the paint in, let it dry and then use it over again, sort of the way you'd use pans? Thanks you, Daria
@TimWilmot
@TimWilmot 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Dara. I do not use fresh paint. The paint dries in the palette. If It has been left a few days and is very dry, I might freshen it up with a spray of clear water.
