As a young kid from just outside Philly (bucks county) that wants to break into the entertainment industry as a comedy writer, Tina Fey is a huge inspiration.

I'm fascinated by accents but it's impossible for me to look up an accent on KZfaq without a million commenters saying "that's not a real [such and such] accent!"

That's because ppl group them. There are so many dialects. And shes from delco which is a mix of the city and s. Jersey

@@splash2849 Philly and Delco share most of the same accent and slang but there's also a difference between ethnicity's accents within our area.

People fail to realize that, they're different accents, in and around Philly.One may grow up in a, Latino, Black, Irish, Italian, or Asian American family, and STILL have different ways of the Philly accent.Tina Fey,(luv her), she's not from the TRUE inner-city of, The Streets of Philadelphia.Ive traveled,b-4, during, and after, my time in the Army and I can ALWAYS tell, when anyone who is speaking,is from Philly,A.C., Wilmington, and/or, even N.Y...-

The Philly accent is pretty unique in that it really is only in Philly. I live an hour away, and nobody talks like that

I lived in Philly until I was 6, so I didn't develop too much of an accent other than "wooder," "ain't," and "shore." But I hear people say "shore" where I live, and I also live an hour outside Philly.

Most Philly Accents are really south Jersey or New York accent. Dick Clark is from there. He dips his dipthong a lot which they do in Philly and he's as close as can be to the accent. Him and James Mcavoy. Closest you can get to an authentic Philly accent. If not let me know.

I disagree with that. South Jersey and NY are thick accents. What's tough about imitating a Philly accent is that it's not as thick as NY or Boston or Alabama or Tennessee etc. It's subtle, but there's a little twang in there. Maybe its like a really mild South Jersey? I can't compare it to NY though. That'd just insulting lol

The "a" is pronounced differently in Philly. Most people only think of this in the "water"=wooder example. But daughter=dooghter. I'm not from the area, but I work around there and can hear it.

You're not totally wrong, from Philly. I definitely agree there are similarities. That Italian/Yonkers accent there's slight differences that aren't easily picked up with certain words, unless you're from these area. There's definitely tone differences in the way we pronounce certain words. Only thing that's important to know is they all say subs instead of hoagies. You just can't do that lol😂

@@irishkk88in my 30s, definitely notice a difference nowadays with the newer generation compared to the older gene from Philly. That deep new Yorker/Italian accent faded out with everyone. When I was a kid in Philly everyone sounded like Rocky. Some people my age and older still have hints of it, but anyone under 30, you can't really notice it.

I hate when County peeps say they're from Philly. But what makes this really bad is, she's not even from Upper Darby as he claims. Shes from Drexel Hill, next to Uppe Darby, next to Upper Darby.

Technically Drexel Hill is part of Upper Darby township (I grew up in the area). It's known as its own neighborhood though, so many people don't realize that.

I mean it’s still right outside of Philly. Does it really matter that much? When PPL ASK ME where I’m from way outside of the area I say Philadelphia. Because I’m 20 mins away. They’re not going to know. Tf.

Upper Darby ain't Philly. These hosts and "celebrities" don't know city life. They weren't raised in a row home like 70% of us Philadelphians. North Philly has it worse than other sections and obviously Kensington too.

UD is mostly rowhomes, and much of the lower northeast, burholme, adams ave area, olney, uptown, south philly, parts of west philly, even Cheltenham village outside the city, etc is almost exactly like UD...lower middle class and blue collar diverse neighborhoods where you see that most people are construction workers, teachers, EMTs, nurses, salon owners, security guards, cooks, store managers, factory workers, and every other job that keep our day to day lives moving. Tina Fey is a rich celebrity now but she came from a greek immigrant block, same kind of neighborhood that the majority of philly is outside the hoods in Kensington/North Philly (and you've also got some pretty bad areas in Southwest too). I mean right up the street you have Darby which is just as bad as the worst parts of philly (ranks nationally for violent crime)

Delco is technically philly, it's literally 15 minutes from west philly so pretty much every time you want to do anything you drive in; as someone from delco I ended up spending most of my time for extracurriculars and stuff in center city, plus it's where most people work- yeah I wouldn't say west chester is philly necessarily but delco counts in my book

Upper Darby is 69th St. It's literally the border of Philadelphia and Delco. UD is def more "Philly Urban" than say Somerton or Chestnut Hill which are technically within the city limits. It's silly for anyone to make an issue that she's not from Philly.

Anyone one who is close enough to the city wants to claim it as their own but the fact is they don't want to actually live here. They want the cultural cachet of the city while actually living in their ticky tacky little houses on the hillside where they all look just the same.

Quite similar but different. Linguists say the Philly accent is a variation of a southern accent but we compress our words and talk fast. I grew up in south Philly and Montco so I could hear the area variants. The British actor, Kate Winslet does the best Delco accent I’ve ever heard a performer do in Mare of Easttown. What is it about British actors that they do American accents better than American actors.

The Philly accent is a horrible sounding, cringe-worthy assault on the ears and an affront to the English language. And Yes, I grew up in Philly. Best exemplified by the old Acme Super saver commercials where the announcer said "We do it Ull fer Ya-ew", of the Philly string bands commercial for their video taped "sha-ew of sha-ews". Frankford was the worst. lol
