My tinfoil barb far out lived 10 years. It was 19 when he died. Measured 17.5 inches long in the end. 3.5 pounds. “Mikey” was huge but very tame. I could hand feed him, pet him, and he followed me in the room all the time. One time he got startled and broke the heater. Thought he wouldn’t survive but he did. Yes he splashed and I couldn’t leave much in the tank with regards to plants or ornaments. I also hand fed him earth worms from time to time. Such an amazing and beautiful fish. Long before the Internet I had him. One day I’ll have many tinfoils in a massive tank. Right now i breed guppies in a 55 gal with all the landscaping and live plants I didn’t have with Mikey. I’m 53 and I started looking after fish at 5. Had Mikey at 3 with 6 other fish. He easily out lived them all along with any pet my friends ever had. I just couldn’t take him for a walk. Lol. Love aquariums for life.

Senior story alert! These are some of the first fish I kept, as a young adult. After college they had grown to 8 inches or so. I moved to NY for a job, and took them and their 55 gal tank along. When I moved two years later to FL, I let a co-worker have the four of them. When I visited a few years later, she had passed on, and her son had them in a bigger tank, much bigger fish. That would have made them 12 years old. They were the small percentage of outliers. 1980s so long since dead. They always had good food and good water. Memory lane includes the fish in our past, lol

now i got my new 135 gal tank, and i have put my tinfoil barbs and silvers dollar in the tank, and im soo happy , tinfoil are so gentle and very friend whit silver dollar lol,, they sleep together , but its very hard to feed the silver dollar those barb are so big and active they literally create too much water movement for the silver dollar . they cannot eat in same area of the tank,, its tricky to feed other fish whit them, its the MAJOR negative point about them but my silvers dollar are actually too small

Just ran across this video. Love all the accurate information you presented regarding the tin foil barb. I love these fish. You hit the nail on the head though because at fish stores you see them in tanks with all the other little fish not realizing they will grow so large. Not right that stores do this. Years ago I had six of them in a 125 gal tank with a wet dry sump filter. No other fish in that tank. They did very well. I hope to do a biotope tank someday with tin foil barbs in a larger tank.

I love tin foil barbs. I too didn't realize how large they would get and had five of them in a 55 gallon tank. I bought a 125 gallon tank that i built into a wall and the five tin foil barbs were the only fish i kept in that talk. The tank was always a head turner for visitors. The fish would take food directly from my fingers and yes I would get a little wet in the process. I don't have tin foil barbs right now, but if I can ever afford a 300 gallon tank I sure would have them again! Peaceful fish that appear to recognize you and their size is both their most positive trait and their most negative trait. As far as a pond, yes larger bodies of water are better for them however goldfish and koi in a pond (which I also have) you can easily view from above. Tin Foil Barbs are best viewed from the side which a pond doesn't offer. Thank you for sharing accurate information about this wonderful species.

Introducing them as a sub school for my Oscars was one of the smartest things I've ever done. Aside from curbing aggression they help pick up after the Oscars and there's less waste in the tank. They're best friends with a pacu. I'm starting a secondary sub school for my next Oscar tank. I'm going to include another sub School of green tiger barbs and some silver dollars. But hands down foil Barb's are the best sub schools for. Any Aquarium. They are the ultimate synchronized swimmer

Most major pet stores actually have these little signs giving information about the fish, like their size and temperament From what I've seen at least some fish stores only show the name and price, not how big they get or whether or not they're aggressive, which I feel should be mandatory Then again, as another reply pointed out, it's up to you the buyer to know what you're getting into by researching a pet *before* you take it home

There are two different species of Tinfoil Barbs that are commonly mistaken for each other. This video is accurate for Barbonymus schwanenfeldii, but their smaller and almost identical looking cousins (Barbonymus altus) only reach about 8 inches max length and can be housed in decent-sized indoor aquariums.

Hey Jason. Great video man. And yes! Tinfoil barbs get big fast! I bought 4 from my LFS when I was starting fish keeping. And they got too big for my 65 gallons. Now something else we need to know is that these fish can and will eat live plants. So plastic plants are the best option. I personally love these fish. But I don’t have te place in my home to set up a large enough tank to keep a school of them.

I have a pair of Tinfoil's that are now 6", I feed them well. I had a few other smaller barbs in the tank however; these two hunt like a pair of wolves and during the night, using those big eyes, they track down any other smaller fish and eat them . Small mouth or not, they are relentless and will devour all live plants. They even ate the 3 huge snails I had, right out of their shells. I was hoping to add some colour to the tank but, I haven't been able to pair them up with any other community fish, they are far from docile.

Your minimalist approach to filtration on this tank is quite impressive.. healthy fish, heavy stocking, and pristine looking water. @@PrimeTimeAquatics a few facts about the substrate? How thick, do you vacuum? Saw the video you referred to, it challenges a lot of my beliefa about filtration. I am a sump guy with 200, 340 and 500 gallon set-ups. With auto feeders and bottom mats i never have to open the top of the aquariums (except for WC) This is one advantage, all the servicing is done with the sumps, and i can have huge blocks of foam. Can see on my channel...
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 5 жыл бұрын
HalfMan HalfCichlid If I gravel vac (only unplanted tanks) I gravel vac all the way to the bottom every week. Gravel substrate is often at least a couple inches thick. Sand might only be an inch or so, maybe a little more.
@HalfManHalfCichlid
@HalfManHalfCichlid 5 жыл бұрын
Prime Time Aquatics thank you. My big tanks are so tall it is nearly impossible to gravel vac the 500 and the 340. Hence the use of Aquadecor bottom mats and power heads that sweep the bottom so that detritus gets sucked into overflows. I realize without substrate I have to compensate for the lost bio capacity of the substrate. Hence the use of sumps with a lot of foam for beneficial bacteria.

It came with 4 tinfoils, 2 denisons, 1 ruby and a very large pleco. They are now my babies, but I feel bad about them being so cooped up. The ruby shows signs of stress because she's much smaller [the tinfoils are 5 inches long and the ruby is only 2ish], and doesn't have a school to hang out with. I go back and forth on my mind if I should get a few more ruby barbs or get rid of the tinfoils. The struggle is real. I have no idea how old the fish are either. Anyways, thanks for the video. I'm surprised to see those tinfoils so peaceful because mine are crazy 😆

Maybe start looking at popeye treatments? Usually, but not always, the root cause is high ammonia, nitrites or nitrates. I start there. Once that is ok if it doesn't start to heal you could look at antibiotic treatment, but it isn't a guarantee it will help. Hope it works out ok.

I had a small school of 4 tinfoil barb with 1 bala shark. I had them for almost 4 years and they were about 6-8 inches; about a month ago, 3 of them died suddenly. Our water was tested and everything was in perfect range. The temperature was perfect as well. They just died and we don’t know why

They may not be so near the end of their lifespan. The one remaining fish I have in a 55 gallon, from a group I bought in 1994, is a tinfoil barb. So, coming up on 27 years old. The other tinfoil barb was somewhere between around 12 when he died. It seems like it's not hard to get them into their 20s, from what I've found. What I can't seem to find is any indication of what the maximum lifespan or the record really is.

In the late 70's a LFS..long gone now, had a 240 gallon with three Tinfoils and they were every bit of 14-16" long,scissor tails lines in black and all fins were red. Even the body color was gun metal color..not the washed out fish that would be sold for the next 30 years. Those fish also had a deep body with a bit of a nuchal hump. Just the best I have ever seen. They lived on all the live brine shrimp and worms and pellet food they could eat. I mean,he would fill that tank with brine shrimp at feeding time. I was glad to see a Tinfoils a few years ago return with red fins and black edging back to the hobby. Only now,I keep smaller fish and plants. Can't have everything!

The angel in the 150 was a veil tail, but I don't remember what it was called when I bought it. I think they just labeled it as mixed. I wouldn't keep them with angles only because of how active oscars can be and how aggressive they eat.
