Dont fight this conditiong, young blood. For this fight you cannot win. Instead choose to fight how you decide to live with this condition to make yourself stronger. At the end of the day we can only make our selves mentally stronger to this condition. Talk about it, go walk a mall when you are stressed, listen to positive music lightly and continue to excercise and or engage in a mentally focused activity.

tire exploded in my right ear when I was 25. constant ringing in my right ear ever since . I was mad at first. I searched for a cure. My local doctor gave me some type of shot in my ear drum. He did this three times. one every week. I still have the ringing in my ear, but I've grown to love the sound. It helps me think. reminds me that I'm alive. I can feel. I can hear. Like the fan noise on older computers, I think about the noise as something that lets me know my brain is on and working.

@gmoops8986

Yes, Doctor, Seriously. I'll come on, man. CashWiley has a point. Ambient noise requires my use of headphones. That blast of sound to begin, makes me tear off the phones to adjust the volume down. Then when at a reasonable conversational level, I adjust again. I would assume an AuD to have realized this. That being out of the way... I appreciate the suggestions to mitigate my tinnitus. I'll follow up on those. Mine has been slowly increasing since the mid-'80s. It's been harder to acclimate. Thanks

This doctor has a lot of good videos and I watch him quite often. I have hearing loss since me and my motorcycle and a very large tree got into an altercation and I loss. Since then I have had tinnitus that’s always at the same level and same sound which is hard to describe. I guess I say I’m lucky in the fact that it’s there but I don’t mind it or pay it much attention to it. I only think about it or hear it when someone brings it up or I run into a video about it. As soon as I get off this video my acknowledgment of it will go away, sorta strange because it’s loud. For you folks that deal with it and it bothers you please take this doctors advice and good luck. You defeat it don’t let it defeat you, you are in control of your life and not some crazy noise. I just ignore it.

Tinnitus caused me severe depression and anxiety and admitted myself to the hospital 3x times and begfed my doctors to help me but they cared less. I pray that all tinnitus sufferes healing. Here in the UK practically ALL E.N.T departments in hospitals still say "there's nothing to worry about - but there's no cure - so you'll just have to get use to it". When I got my hearing test they didn't even determine the loudness of my tinnitus or give me a tinnitus questionnaire! It's as though they only consider physical problems - ie. ones they can operate on.

Extremely helpful. My tinnitus has been ongoing for over 45 years. I have learned to live with it mostly. The last 2 years it has increased tremendously. To the point I frequently do not hear the first few words anyone is saying to me. As soon as I focus on the conversation I am fine but it drives my wife crazy in having to frequently having to restate the words. I believe my hearing is normal but the sound is like a wetlands filled with cicadas. To sleep I play a natural sound effects app of frogs, crickets and night birds. The volume I play is max on my smartphone. Has to be that loud to offset the tinnitus.

since the severity of my tinnitus varies day to day, i've tried to keep a quasi-rigorous log of what i eat to see if i can discern any correlations. i believe i've found one that holds up to repeated verification, at least for me. if i eat one cup of FRESH blueberries early in the day before any meals, it appears to significantly lessen the severity of the ringing in my ears for the whole day. blueberries ARE loaded with antioxidants, and no doubt many other things of which science is yet unaware. i don't know if it will work for anyone else, but I'm throwing it out there. if you try it, you can post your observations here, pro or con. not all tinnitus is the same, so it WON'T work for all.

Best explanation I ever seen! I am from Brazil, got an acoustic neuroma and my life has turn into a hell because of tinnitus experience😔. From 4600hz to 8000hz non stop ringing sounds in my head, I also had to learn again how to balance my body and live with dizziness (... those symptoms lead me to depression, fatigue). I am fighting back now, looking for hearing aid , adapting to meds and trying to exercise. Those little devices are ridiculously expensive in Brazil and I am not quite sure which one (model/brand) would be the best for me. I wish my doctor could be as open and patiently informative as you. My dad had a traumatic fall down his basement staircase many years ago, his head slammed against the concrete floor, and it was a bloody mess. He suffered a severe brain injury, had to be sent to the ICU, and was in a coma. It was a nightmare. Anyway, a month after his fall he developed SEVERE and LOUD ringing in both his ears. It was so loud that he couldn’t hear the person next to him talking. It drove him absolutely insane and caused anxiety and panic attacks. He became sleep deprived as it kept him up all night and couldn’t function the next day. His ears have been ringing for 10 years straight and he’s forgotten what peace and quiet is like. As his son, I feel so bad for him and I really wish I can find a cure or effective treatment for him. This looks very good. He’s a great, loving person and doesn’t deserve to be tormented like this. It’s destroying his life and well-being 😰

Thanks for the advice (app) is just what I was looking for after seeing and hearing so many others who just want you to go to their study, she is generous with advice instead. I have been suffering from tinnitus for a year, a 10,000 herz frequency , a pressure cooker, with minimal hearing loss. Maybe the cause is a breakdown that I don't understand. At first I seemed crazy, the noise was madness. I haven't slept for at least a week, then I took sleeping pills and slept 2 hours. Then I had to take medicine because I was depressed but I stopped as soon as it was better. Now after a year I can sleep and I do not show my suffering to others but I always have this bad friend inside my head. I work on the PC and I feel it a lot, if I was driving a truck I felt it less. I am 57 years old and my life is that of an invalid. Thanks for the app, it will help me a lot I think. Vincenzo from south Italy (Calabria).

Its like when you go to a concert in the front row and your ears constantly ring, I never even knew this was a thing until I got it. Its so loud that I lose concentration, miss out on conversations but I’m going to try the white noise canceling. Thanks for all of the information you’re a lifesaver.

When I put my hearing aids in, my tinnitus immediately drops at least 50%, and when I take them out, it goes right back up. But I wonder why it's not 100%. Also, be careful with the masking. If your hearing aids are programmed too loud (it can happen) or if you're listening to masking sounds at very high volume (that sound normal to you because of your hearing loss), you can cause more damage and increase the tinnitus. I found that out the hard way.

I've had tinnitus for decades. Some days worse than others, but it's there 24/7. It's in both ears. The only time it went away for about 4 hours, in one ear, was when they numbed an area near a molar (close to the ear) for dental surgery. I told my dentist when I went for follow up. But he said nothing. Someone might want to research it!

Tinnitus can have multiple causes and can be effected by a number of things in addition to the causes. The possible cause and or additional effect in your experience was probably due to TMJ tension. Problems with the alignment of the temporal mandible joint can cause tinnitus and this type of tinnitus can actually be cured via orthodontics realigning the joint to remove the pain and stress associated. The other causes are stress drug reactions injuries hearing lose and tumours to name a few. I have heard of an effective treatment where sound is used in a therapeutic massage of the fillia in the ear that can reduce or temporarily numb the tinnitus.

I forgot to mention there can be a link to vertigo also and two treatments for vertigo can also reduce tinnitus. One is the physiotherapy practice of moving the crystals that build up in the inner ear to a neutral spot and the other is a diuretic treatment using a drug called serc. I’ve had a reduction in tinnitus after both of these.

I've suffered from tinnitus for as long as I can remember. It's not super loud or painful, just annoying background noise that won't go away. The worst aspect is that the ringing frequency often makes it harder to hear other people in conversation. On the plus side, I have a built-in white noise generator that I can focus on to tune out the world when needed. . As for falling asleep with the constant ringing, I've found that adding even more noise, masking or otherwise, only makes it harder to doze off. Instead, I distract myself away from the ringing by focusing on my inner voice (like talking to yourself, just not out loud). . I do a thought exercise I call the "a to z game" where you pick a topic and name a handful of examples starting with a given letter ("apples, blueberries", "aardvarks, badgers, ", etc.), working your way through the alphabet. I never make it more than a few letters without falling asleep, so it seems to work (for me at least).

There's a plethora of treatable conditions that cause somatic tinnitus. People whose tinnitus is caused by TMJ, narrowing of the Eustachian tube etc. can be treated. Sensorineural tinnitus caused by physical damage to the hair cells (and confirmed via OAE) is the the only kind of tinnitus that cannot be eliminated. However: ALL forms of tinnitus, even senorineural tinnitus, can be attenuated by magnesium glycinate and n-acetyl-l-cystein. Magnesium will also prevent accelerated hearing loss. And let's not forget the body's ability to adapt. Recruitment of hair cells next to the ones that no longer function helps to flatten the curve, thereby decreasing tinnitus.

Try this when your tinnitus is really bugging you: Cover your ears with your palms, interlacing your fingers behind your head. Now thump the back of your head with your fingers, sliding one first finger off the other with pressure, to make the thump harder. Do that for 10 seconds. This will not make the ringing go away, but it will take the edge off for long enough to forget about it and go about your day. Repeat as needed.

It is relatively common for tinnitus to coincide with TMJ dysfunction. As you indicated, this is likely due to increased stress associated from the TMJ. If you haven't had your hearing tested by an Audiologist yet, I suggest you do. Sometimes, ear related issues disguise themselves as TMJ problems due to referred pain.

Tinnitus May have a somatic component; any thoughtful Audiological work-up should include looking at other possible reasons (beside hearing loss) for the Tinnitus. TMJ, prescription and over the counter drugs, can affect Tinnitus. This video may be superficial in its treatment. ReSound’s app, Widex Zen, and notch therapy in Siemens/Signia, are not mentioned. When in doubt, look for an ABA board-certified Audiologist with a specialty in Tinnitus.

Dr. Olson, thanks for sharing your knowledge about tinnitus. I recently came across an article, where someone experamated with "in his mind!" mentaly or willfuly canged the pitch of his ringing to a lower and lower sound , and softer and softer, it took several weeks of doing this, but he swears the ringing stoped "its free, and worth a try" I also read where a ear doctor said that those little ear hairs that vibrate to sound can get damaged with lowed noise, and thats what causes the ears to send a false siggnal to the brain! makes sence to me!

So glad i watched the video. I have tinnitus since last 2-3 weeks or more like i have started sensing it more since that time period... I went to see the doc but he gave me some medicines which is not working in anyway. Whenever i am in silent place my tinnitus is getting louder. As per your advice i will go and ask them to give me a hearing device. It is very sad to see many doctors are just don't have proper knowledge. Thank you so much and let's see how much i can improve or not maybe 🤗

First step before doing anything else is to get a hearing evaluation from an audiologist. It should be diagnosed correctly before being treated.

One of the best and most informative explanations I have yet to to see on this topic. The care options, alone, are great information.

I use a white noise machine at bedtime and an app on my phone that plays pleasant sounds like rain, waves, etc right into my hearing aids for daytime use. It's better than the buzzing hornets I usually have. I have also trained myself to tune the tinnitus out to some extent.

almost 2020 and Im quite amazed that there is no cure for tinnitus and neither any information about how it develops. I have tinnitus only in one ear.. I never used headphones nor listened to loud music. I did had a small ear infection when I was younger on the same ear I have my tinnitus now (because I used to swim alot). The infection got treated with some antibiotics. I do not have a stressful life but it is very difficult to live with this tinnitus cuz I cant focus on reading/studying and doing my work at the office. It makes me go crazy.. I just want it to stop

It's possible that your tinnitus was triggered by the antibiotics you were taken to treat your ear, there around 400 major factors that can cause tinnitus, including medications, and things such as high blood pressure, that type of tinnitus is called pulsatile tinnitus, so you should go to your dr get bellos work and hopefully he can refer you to an audiologist or ENT, so you wontvendvup breaking your bank, finding out whats the cause of your tinnitus is key to start a plan treatment, other wise you'll be guessing and wasting time and money trying to find a cure

I was recently put on amitriptyline for depression and 4weeks into it I’ve developed severe tinnitus. It’s so loud it’s unbearable and lasts all day long. I’ve done some research and found out amitriptyline can cause tinnitus. I’m absolutely beside myself terrified it’s causes permanent damage to my hearing. Now I’m not sure what to think as you say stress can cause it, stress was why I’m on the antidepressant. Really don’t know what to do now… also feeling a lot of pressure in my ears and my hearing has become slightly muffled so it makes sense that you say it can be due to hearing loss. Thanks for advice I’ve just downloaded the app and I’ll book an appointment with my Gp for hearing loss referral

AFAIK, I've had tinnitus for 60 years. I"m so habituated, that I don't notice it. It is not annoying. I hear it when I think about it, but I associate it with the pleasant sound of crickets and insects at night. But I thought that the tinnitus was the cause of my poor hearing, or at least an aggravating factor. But your video says that it is a symptom of hearing loss; just the opposite. Is that the correct interpretation?

I’m definitely going to look for an audiologist . I’m not stressed out about my tinnitus , and I can mask over it but in a quiet room it’s very obvious .

I have Tinnitus for 6 years and now is worse in my right ear. First-able thank you for this information. I already downloaded the Starkey app. My audiologist doesn't go beyond what is Tinnitus. Not sure if is because there is no cure, but I will be curious to see what is inside of my ear, how my eardrum is working, or maybe surgery, my T is done by medications. This is driving me completely inside. Thanks!

yes, covering up a noise with another noise will solve every-bodies problem! no need to look into research or anything, it's not like people are killing themselves.

I have had tinnitus for years. Then, about 7yrs ago, I developed 'MUSICAL (AUDIO) HALLUCINATIONS ' too. Over a short period, I began hearing (?) Complete orchestration, opera, bagpipes and piano and violen duels. It was really great during quite times. Now, it has been reduced by about 90% with musical repetitive notes. I do miss the old music. No one could explain why this occurred. Can you?

Oh, wait, I think I don't have tinnitus anymore, cuz after that intro I completely lost all the capacity of hearing, even the sounds created by/in head. Finally, peace. Thanks, Dok!

It's funny that you say that because apparently going deaf doesn't stop tinnitus! So you could be deaf and still have tinnitus!

I just went yesterday to the ENT. I got a hearing test done. He said that my hearing had slightly changed since 2018. He didn’t say anything or ask anything about the pitch of my tinnitis. I have an appointment still set up for the 9th of this month with my originally planned appointment. I just took another appointment at a different location so I could be seen sooner. I’m going to ask more questions because the other doctor didn’t seem to interested in finding out anything. He basically said yes it’s tinnitis and sent me on my way. Said I could do therapy but didn’t give me any information about anything. I won’t see him again.

Considering my age my hearing is VERY GOOD. My tinnitus started after several injections of carbocaine at the dentist. I believe that caused the hissing that I have had for about 4.5 months
