The worst part of tiny house living is winter, when my heated hose fails, resulting in 1-2 weeks without running water. Pile that on top of job hunting, dark winter days and a splash of seasonal depression, and it is a rough period. But with some planning, I've learned to survive this seasonal mishap.

We built a tiny home as well. 1. Can you skirt your home? 2. Is your home insulated underneath? 3. Could you call a local plumber to perhaps create a long term solution? 4. Mental health wise…do you have or have interest in Christian faith?

I'm with you on the freezing water in the morning thing! Good luck dealing with all of the water issues too! I grew up with well water and every time we would lose electricity we would lose water, so we got used to filling up pots and pans anytime a storm happened so I can empathize with you, but you seem to be doing pretty good, we could all take a lesson from you!

I grew up in Texas, so I can sympathize with not being prepared for frozen and or ruptured pipes. It happened to our little family in Sugarland, Texas right after the birth of our second son and it was awful. Like you we weren't prepared. Now, we try to keep a supply of several gallons of water and canned goods on hand at all times, but we don't always manage to do so. Life is what happens 😂! We just have to make the best of it. I love the noodle dinner in the jar recipe. Thank you. ❤

Forgot to say you could also leave cabinet doors open where water enters the home, which is usually near sinks. It gets surprisingly cold under the sinks that are near the outdoors. Leaving the doors open guarantees that the areas will be at least room temperature. And remember that moving water doesn't freeze as easily. That's why the drip. You may say that's wasteful. It is, but you could always catch it in your sink if it is dripping slowly enough so as not to overflow while you sleep. Get up a couple of times the first time you do it to get an idea of how quickly your sink fills. Just a slow drip or a stream the size of a ballpoint pen tip is usually enough. I do the drip most often.

So many people have recommended the drip. I can’t do that when it’s negative temps because my drainage pipe is exposed outside of (underneath rather) my home and so that drip will actually freeze before it makes its way down, which will then add up and cause a blockage. I say this from experience 😬

I’m building a tiny house right now but I’m staying in my little Casita camper in an RV Park Florida. If the electric goes out which it does a lot in the summer here I don’t have any water so I do the same things you do but the difference is in the kitchen for dishes I use vinegar spray and I clean my dishes and wipe them dry resident instead of go using plastic- it is keeping me from going crazy lol. I keep extra water on board all the time is here as well and so whenever I use some for my filter pitcher I refill it and that’s been helpful. I have to face adding an alternative source of heat for the house because it’s on electric there in Tennessee and also insulating my pipes which I’ll start underneath the vehicle eventually and work my way out being there in the winter as I get older travel may not be as convenient and I have to be ready for the future. Thank you for sharing

Great video and to know some of the issues with Tiny Home living. Skirting in your Tiny Home will help with the cold in your pipes etc. Plus keep your floors warmer. How much insulation is in your floors? Love your home because it is so light and looks large. My favorite part is the kitchen because I love to cook and bake. Also love your trough tub. Prayers that you don't have water issues anymore. You've had enough issues with that.

There are personal cleansing hand wipes that were used after disasters in NJ and FL. They also sell them for “men” for use after heavy workouts. I can personally confirm that towelettes work. They are nice in the car but essential when the electricity goes out and the pump does work or the basement floods and nothing works or My generator is being used by 4 other houses. I agree with the heat tape, spigot cover, drain if you can get it to work and all the suggestions. But my favorite is heated floors, not for anything but spoiled luxury. 😊

Good evening, Jen, I just wanted to say I came across your channel and my suggested videos as I do watch a lot of tiny home videos. I am beyond blessed to find your channel. Your story has been such a huge inspiration for me. I currently am a single man living at home with my parents (22 years old) in an area that does not have affordable housing. Most of the homes in my area start at 600,000 and go up to one and a half million. I am located in the DC area. I am currently finishing up my associates degree and then I will be moving onto a four-year college to get my political science degree with hope of getting into the federal government. Currently, I am working on becoming a school secretary at the school that I substitute teach at a lot like you. This job will give me the pay that is needed to move out into a tiny home. you are such a huge inspiration for me, and I pray that you continue to be successful in life as a single mom or empty Nester. ❤

maybe you can move to California your kids are all grown up now ..Don't worry they will follow you...LOL....my suggestion San Diego there is a tiny house community not to far away....Or Norther California near Santa Rosa, They have a river for kayaking the redwoods for hiking , wine tasting , and the coast is not far away to go to on the hot summer days...and never a worry about pipes freezing :) ...if anything at least take a vacation to visit these places it will calm your nerves :)

Another easy meal to make is spaghetti bolognese. Yes you could use some water for the spaghetti. But you can also just buy a tin of spaghetti. Maybe not as nice but easy and no water needed. Just pour into the sauce. Hopefully you'll have a new hose soon that'll be equipped to handle the cold weather you have. 🥶 Best of luck 🙏

When I had my tiny house in Fort Collins, my water would often freeze, but I stopped having that problem when I put an outdoor faucet cover (with insulation and heat tape under it) over my water intake. My water didn't freeze even when it was -25. I don't know if that could help your situation.
@trailheadtiny
@trailheadtiny 5 ай бұрын
Thank you! I believe this last situation was actually caused by the heat tape wrapping around the heated hose. I think it just melted it. So now I'm using a heated pet pad, which keeps it warm but can be adjusted to a lower level of heat and has more insulation between the two things. fingers crossed!

The main thing you need is to underpin your house to keep your pipes from freezing . Underpin and insulate properly will stop this from happen . Also the proper use of heat tape added and no more frozen pipes. Watch how to videos on u tube you can do this and no more worries. Knowledge is power !!!!!! Or if you can' t do it on your own find someone that can do it problem solved.

Right I am just renting on someone else's property right now. I was using heat tape to wrap around the brass fitting where the hose connects to my house in the front. And I believe that heat tape was melting the heated hose. So now I'm using a heated pet pad which is waterproof and I can adjust the heat setting. It's an odd thing but man it seems to be working. I'm confused as to why you do not have skirting? All of the RV life channels I follow and tiny home channels say that skirting is essential to holding in your heat. Otherwise it's like heating the house with the door open? Also do you have a rec center or YMCA you can take a shower in?
@trailheadtiny
@trailheadtiny 5 ай бұрын
I don’t have skirting because originally my water hose connected under my house straight to my kitchen sink behind my wheels. I had issues right off the bat so I never got around to adding skirting bc I needed to be able to see that connection and also crawl under my house to deal with the hose. Now that my connection isn’t under my house I’ve been researching skirting. Honestly I’m looking for an affordable way to do it that still looks nice.

@@trailheadtinyHopefully you find something you like and can put it up. That would be fantastic if it solved some of the hose issues! If nothing else, it could deter creatures from getting under there, or heat/a/c loss. This was great. So, I apologize but I don't recall if you ever mentioned anything about having heated floors…? The worst case scenario that has always been in the back of my mind has been getting really sick, like mega vomiting kind. I know that probably most probably do it in a toilet. I've been one who prefers a sink. Not a pleasant topic and grateful it doesn't happen often but definitely something to think about after all the covid, flu stuff. Especially if one has an upstairs bedroom option with a ladder, etc. I saw one woman had that concern so she decided to use a daybed as her couch so if ever she was I'll she could just stay on the daybed. I never really thought about the lack of water issues but you are the second one I've seen have that for an extended time this year. Cringe. Hopefully it's all sorting out now. Gosh...you practically need a full storage just for backup hoses, lol 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🙏

Yes I’ve thought of all of these things! You can’t vomit into a compost toilet. I mean. You could buy ewww. So you’re back to the popcorn bowl or whatever and I’d probably have to just dump it over the fence in the back. Honestly I don’t know. And yes I think if something happened wheee I could no longer go up and down the stairs I also would set up a day bed in my living area. All good things to think about!
