At the time, it was the highest-ever rating for a talk show, pulling in 45 million viewers, and was the second-highest rated TV broadcast of the 1960s, surpassed in viewers only by the Moon Landing.

He was a very unique entertainer, people didn’t know what to make of him. I always felt bad that people made fun of him the way they did. He was genuinely a really nice person.

That was disturbing. The thing is, he was so creepy and weird, he was an oddity. That beak - he looks like a tall version of Danny Devito's Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin in Batman, pale and 1/2 dead looking. No one was really a fan of his, they thought he was funny and creepy. No one thought he had a great voice or wanted to listen to his music - it was funny and creepy. I remember when he married Miss Vicki - a normal girl marrying that creepy, weird guy. I think most girls would have thrown up in their own mouths if they had to kiss him, and a projectile vomit if they had to sleep with him or even see that without clothes on. He's gross. I was a little kid... it was like a trainwreck when he was on TV. You kind of had to watch and be grossed out.
