A Norwegian family built a cob house inside of a glass dome on a remote island. This incredible home is extremely efficient, allowing the family to live here comfortably year round while growing their own vegetables and creating natural heating and cooling.

Seamless fusion of principles with dome, cob house, geothermal, solar and stove underfloor heating, the bottlewalls, thick walls for insulation, growing their own food, reusing waste water, some very humble pieces of furniture. They've basically done what I'd only think about. Amazing.
@largemarge1603
@largemarge1603 Жыл бұрын
@ug, Architect here, with the livability designer looking over my shoulder. The 'thick walls' provide thermal mass to moderate temperature swings. In this situation, the home is housed inside a thermal envelope, providing significantly-greater moderation. . Additionally, the mass of the structure is tied to the mass of the planet, increasing the 'thermal battery' to almost beyond calculation. . Compare this to a stick-house built on a raised foundation with a crawl-space for water-pipe maintenance. That construction style results in near-zero thermal mass with near-zero thermal battery effect. That structure requires continual inputs of outside energy -- electricity, coal, wood -- to heat... a process I call 'comfort through brute force'. . In today's tour, our guides describe increasing their access to vastly greater amounts of thermal mass through their design of buried ventilation tubes. As the air naturally convects through the tubes, the thermal mass of the planet automatically adjusts its temperature to the temperature of the planet a few feet/meters underground. This temperate-zone air helps regulate the interior of the dome, and with it, the comfort level of the home. . 1980s. Los Molina, California. We built a subdivision of concrete homes using standardized 'tilt-up' warehouse construction techniques. That region is known for months of stressful summer heat. We built -- as warehouse construction dictates -- on a concrete slab (thermal mass tied to the planet mass) with concrete exterior and inside walls. We insulated the outside of the exterior walls, then finished using traditional house exteriors such as brick and wood facing. . Driving through the area, the homes appear identical to any stick house. However, the instant you step inside, the temperature difference is immediately noticed. . The second impact comes from the absolute silence. A wood house transfers the outside noise -- traffic, wind, voices/music -- into the resident ears. Our concrete homes provide a restful respite from the outside world... and I think this should be the goal of any home!

The Earthship concept is well-suited for a place like Arizona, but probably wouldn't work well in a climate like they have in Norway. The geodesic dome offers additional protection from the elements, which helps keeping the internal cob house intact.

But they are very well insulated during winter. Temperatures inside these kinds of structures don't change like in a typical home. In my typical terrace house it goes from 17 Celsius in winter up to around 26 in summer. If my house was made from clay, and covered by a dome, the Temperatures would more likely range from 20-23 Celsius all year round. So the transition isn't even noticeable, as in a typical home. I know they have no sun, or far less sun for outdoor living during winter, BUT that's so cool and unique, besides it makes you appreciate summer.

@@jemma50 on the plus side, u get a lot more daylight in summer. Honestly I think you'd be surprised by the hidden positives of less daylight, as u would by extra daylight in summer. U can't get skin cancer in the dark. You can enjoy longer winter sleeps. Nothing more frustrating than seeing the sun rise between 6-7am on weekends, when I'm trying to sleep in. Air quality is better in winter. No bush fires like in some cities like my city, Sydney. We have horrible bushfire most summers. Like u said u can appreciate stars in winter, magical. And I think to make the season shorter, u could travel somewhere where it's summer for a couple of weeks. Just imagine how cool that would be, OR invite airbnb guest to experience that beautiful light show in the sky. That would be magical. I love summer in Sydney, but winter is cold & if I'm gonna be stuck inside during winter, I'd rather have longer darker days. I just love everything about this house, in rural part of India some people still live in such mud houses, and I was too living 5 years back, mud hoses are cool in summers and warm in winters, unlike concrete houses they are very soothing to body and mind. Just loved the word OM 🕉 sculpted on the wall of living space of this house and sending lots of love from India.

So, so, lovely! So idyllic looking and yet it's not an easy going lifestyle, is it? You work hard but it sounds like it's worth it! Thanks for sharing.

We are so poor here in America. Stuck in apartments while people are living beautiful lives all over the world. This is incredible ❤❤❤❤❤

I think it's a little bit silly to build a space-age dome over a Stone Age home, but I like it! It's not the most practical or efficient combination, but it's extremely pleasing! Maybe I will do something like this if I ever stumble into a bunch of money.

Aesthetically, I think the architectural styles clash. I would either want to update the home, or alter the architecture of the dome to be more complementary to the home.

Did you know that 3 million Krone is only $300K US? And I'm not sure how this isn't practical. That dome allows for both hot and cold insulation, as well as protecting the home from elements that would break it down in all seasons.

Fresh air, warm air in winter, cool air in summer all due to natural convection. I did this with plastic culverts under ground to the basement of our home years ago. Glad to see other people using this free energy system. Love the home you built for yourselves. Excellent workmanship!

Great stream, as always. I appreciate the level-headed approach you take to the news and the markets. A lot has changed and that's on everything but the truth is I don't even care much about bullish or bearish market anymore because Mr Richard Scote got me cover as I am comfortably making 1.5B T C monthly...

@@Stephen85 True. I have branched out from Tiny Homes (though I have not changed the channel name). This episode was part of my "Alternative Home" series, where I feature unique homes of any size. Usually whimsical or eco-friendly, but always amazing. You may have noticed the opening credit was for "Alternative Homes" and it's not on my Tiny Home Tour playlist.
