The art materials I use in the videos are not sponsored.
I prefer to work on multi-purpose paper, more info in this video: • How to choose the RIGH... In almost all my videos I use with Winsor&Newton Galeria acrylics, if not, I will say so in the video. Other materials I use are in random order: 5, 10 and 40mm brushes, palette knives, acrylics medium, Ecoline liquid watercolor, Lyra color pencils, Lyra soft pastels, oil pastels, Stabilo color pencils, paper palette pad and basic masking tape. I also use household items like a permanent marker, scrub sponge, scissors, paper towel, and so on.

I'm incredibly new to painting, or art in general, and I've been watching loads of videos to gain knowledge, insight, inspiration, encouragement, etc. I've found several artists I like a lot, but yours is the first that inspired me to comment...I absolutely love your personality, creativity, ideas, thoughts - everything. Thank you SO much. I have a very close friend who can barely distinguish anything but black (and he's a very successful graphic designer, go figure) so I wanted to find something to paint for him. I've only so far seen this one video from you, but I plan to watch a lot more. Thank you so much for making a brightly-colored-painting-lover appreciate black and white..

Hi Salim, thanks. Nice to know I could help you in unexpected ways. Funny, I never know why I put, like this time, a Kandinsky-part in it, it seems just 'logically' to me, but I do it on intuition. I'd never heard of dry swimming, but I think there's something to that exercise. I think it may be akin to capturing ideas in one's sketchbook as well. I do like Kline, and black and white painting, however, I'm more drawn to color personally. There's room in the arts for both. I too saw the figure in that last painting before you mentioned it. Some of these black and white painting reminds me of the work by Joji Nakamura, you can Google him. Most of his work is simple or minimal, others more playful.

I'm so pleased that this is your third video related to mark making and absract art, thank you. The first painting of yours in this video, (which you show on the wall) is wonderfull. It would sit next to any other other work of this kind, in any big gallery. I wanted it on my wall, but I would not dream of copying another's style. There is a whole world to paint!. I showed some of my calligraphic brush art, that you saw, to one of my wife's brothers. There was a pause, then he said, "What are they? Are they supposed to be something?" Then he shrugged. SIGH. Mind you, he was an inspector in the police force, what could I have expected? I'm now wondering if I can work towards automatic painting, bypassing my conscious mind, during the act of painting.
@ImperfectPaintings
@ImperfectPaintings 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gordon, thanks. I liked the first one too. I had no plan. Just did one line and reacted on it. Not minding what it would become. It's not automatic painting but it's in that area I guess. Funny family members you have. I know the feeling. I guess it's like gardening. Some want a typical British lawn, others prefer bushes. Some put paint on a wall, others on a canvas. Will you tell me when you have success with automatic painting? Have a wonderful day, Albert

I'm loving watching your videos. I'd like your opinion on this. When doing these minimalistic paintings on stretched canvas, is it recommended or necessary to paint the background, even if it's just white paint or is it acceptable to leave bare canvas showing?
@ImperfectPaintings
@ImperfectPaintings 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy, thanks. Good question. What I mostly show in my videos are ideas to get you going. So I this case minimalist black&white. I look at them as sketches. When you would do this on a canvas, even a gessoed one, I would start with a white or light layer. It maybe is hardly visible, but you would 'feel' or sense a different energy radiate from it. More layers adds a depth to it. I recommend trying it and see for yourself if this is correct. Happy painting, Albert

I enjoy the amazing contrasts of black and white. Maybe you can talk a bit at some point about the struggle of a simple black and white painting looking too much like art that has already been done before. I guess I still kind of question or struggle with art that looks too copied from other artists and doing black and white really accentuates that kind of problem for me. How can I make it really mine and original if it already looks like someone else's? Is that a major enough question! Even asking that question makes me think I am missing something. Any painting I do, is mine and is original I guess. Loving your videos a ton!
@ImperfectPaintings
@ImperfectPaintings 3 жыл бұрын
Hi James, interesting question for the video. I guess all males and females look the same. But you marry the one. What's the difference? I guess you got to know her better, spend more time with her, saw details you preferred over others. Art that 'looks the same' like yours is probably quite different from your artwork. Especially in real life situations like a museum. Continue making yours, it will change slightly or massively and in a year look totally different because you evolve. Stil, interesting question. I'll look into it. Albert

Heel leuke, interessante video Albert......bedankt! Hoop meer van dit soort video's....doe er veel ideeen van op! Heb je weleens een video van Judy Hintz Cox gezien? Zij doet minimalistisch abstract werk, ook veel zwart en wit.....een heel interessante vrouw.

Hi Albert, your videos are inspiring and watching them has really loosened up my style. I think you might like two lesser known abstract artists, Sharon Barr and Syliva Tait. Both are contemporary Canadian artists whose paintings I really love. Of course I have to ask you to consider making a tutorial for all of us!

Hi Michele, thanks. And thanks for suggesting these two artists, it's always nice to get new ones. I can't guarantee anything but I will look into it. I'll put them on my (growing) list. Happy painting, Albert

Great video, Albert. Franz Kline is my all-time favorite artist, and I am so glad you covered his work. His influence on a lot of my own paintings is evident, but not always obvious (by design). Once again, thank you so much..!

Hi again. I've emailed you just now. I understood that you were asking about automatic painting. What I didn't say, is that there is a direct link between the two. The Surrealists started automatic writing, sparked off by the sudden rise of psychoanalysis and dream states. Automatic painting came when painters realised that the same techniques could be applied to painting. (Also to musical composition and other arts).

I read somewhere that Franz Klein preferred to use normal black house paint. Apparently his agent tried to swap his house paint with expensive artist grade paint but he was furious when he discovered this.

I love painting in black and white. However, I struggle with knowing when to stop and not overwork a piece.

Hi sternits, thanks. I know what you mean, it's a problem a lot of people have (me included). I don't know if you look for advice on this, but what I did to help me was to stop every now and then and take a picture. I even set a timer on 3 minutes. It's a burden for being in a flow but afterwards I looked at all the pictures and got a better idea where I start overworking. Albert
