We often hear about elder abuse (which is awful) but we rarely hear about caregiver abuse. I went through that process with my own elderly mother and I want to share with you how I handled the situation and what I learned, so hopefully it can help you too.

Yes, that is very true. We just have to remember that it's their pain and to try our best not to take it personally. As an OT working with elderly folks I've been hit and bit and smacked and yelled at more times than I can count but I needed to learn (and I did) that it wasn't their intention, they were just in pain, physically, emotionally, etc. That really taught me how to compartmentalize my emotions from what was happening. It was a good lesson. I'm so very grateful for my years as an OT.

Oh I get it! When you're dealing with past trauma and all the after effects of those traumas (i.e. addictions, anger issues, denial, narcissism, etc.) it's extremely difficult! The best advice I can give you is to find a counselor that can help you through it. And also, try your best not to take it personally. It's their pain, not yours.

My father was verbally rougher with me at the end of his life, bringing me to tears. Thank you.

Oh yes, I hate it when that happens. I saw that so many times and it's sad because it kinda makes it hard, I think, to forget those words and moments. You want to try to remember all the great things instead of those terrible ones, but it's hard. Thanks for your comment and I do hope that this video helped you a bit to forgive him.

Wow, thank you so much for this video, I am a care giver and this has encouraged and blessed me so much. In line with our duty and responsibilities we are faced with lots of challenges from some aggressive residents but maintaining a positive attitude in everything we do is where we derive our strength from. Cheers

Oh I love your attitude. You are so right! Strength does come from a positive attitude, but that positive attitude has to come from strength too! It's a cycle. As a caregiver, I just want you to know that you are an amazing person. Not many people can do it and most everyone wants to avoid it. So bless ya and keep that positive energy flowing! Oh, and thanks for your beautiful comment.
