In this on site video we give tips for replacing light switches. It is important to check the damage the screw has done to the copper before screwing back into it with a new light switch as it can be weak and break the copper conductor. We see that the cables are pre 2004 colours and talk about the selection of conductor colour for the common of the 2 way switch and much more.
Note always prove the circuit is isolated and isolation is secured before staring work on an electrical system.

Worth investing in a 3.5mm thread tapping tool from CK. Box threads are often in poor condition (even on new boxes) so I run the tapper through to refresh.

Plus, it is good working practice where a 25, 35mm 47mm mm single flush box has been used for either a switch or single socket, fused spur, etc. is to flatten the top and bottom 3.5 lugs of the box so no conductor can be trapped between the accessory and box, which should have been done when originally installed and now. 😉

Just my preference, but I still think it is better to plan which way up the 2 way switch is positioned. This can ensure that both switches are position paired when in the off state. It's aesthetically more pleasing.

Obviously not a requirement but any 2 way switches I fit I make sure that when both rockers on the switches are up or both rockers down the light is off. Easy then for the customer to know the light is off when re lamping Also worth checking the earth is connected to the system . One housing estate round here although there is earth in the lighting circuit it’s not connected down to the switches and that was wired at the time by the SEB in the mid 60s I’m also one of the people who use Red or Brown for common

You can get switches with spring connections in the back and have been able to for over 25 years .

Yes, and pretty much all of them will eventually have either the spring fail, or the plastic crumble from age. You also do not want to run high current through them, as the small contact area does heat up.

The spring connections are very common in France and Germany but are you saying in the U.K.?

I've had switches in my flat that have screwless connections since before I had it, Atherstone, north Warwickshire. never had the connection fail but the one switch has worn out . I'll have a look what make they are.
