The main reason i thought the earth pin was longer is so it is the last conductor to disconnect. There are other outlets that don't need the earth pin to do this, the shutters have a chamfer on them so the live and neutral pins push on the shutters and they then twist out of the way.

@ILOVEHALOhahajkКүн бұрын
A dash of common sense would suggest its probably not live seeing as he is handling connector blocks whilst tugging at the old cable, would you touch it without isolating it? Probably? Does that make you useless?

The problem is with thin flex - the plug will often lie prongs-up when you unplug something and leave it on the floor. This really hurts if you tread on it.

European plugs and sockets are terrible in design and so flimsy. Especially if you use the shallow socket, the plug just wobbles about

The German Schucko plug is still probably superior to the British plug. Someone on KZfaq needs to do a comparison.

I do remember getting a shock from a plug with uninsulated pins as a child. At that time, the early 13 amp wall sockets (in the early 1960's) were all black and the majority of sockets used in social housing were unswitched.
@Elfin43 күн бұрын
I agree that British plugs are superior. Having lived in Australia, and traveled Europe, Middle East and Asia the British plug is superior in design and function.
@July-A73 күн бұрын
This is a fallacy . Nothing superior about the English plugs, unless you are talking about child proof . The closed holes indeed make them safer. But this is an aspect that can easely be addressed with a cover on the continental sockets.
@Elfin43 күн бұрын
That’s not the point, owners should not need to inset plug covers that’s how the British plug is a superior design d functional.
@July-A73 күн бұрын
@@Elfin4 of course it is the pont. You made it. I clarified it . Why going back now and contradicting yourself?

@@Elfin4 New Schuko socket outlets have shutters in them, so it's not a "I need to put something into my socket outlet" things. The contacts are made of brass too, but they are tin coated to prevent corrosion. The kind of corrosion that can be seen on the old plug shown in the video, and that is far worse in damp locations. And that leads to contact resistance. Several people also think that plug is superior because it has a fuse. That fuse is a necessity due to the ring final circuits that are fused with 32A, and the cable between appliance and plug is not rated for that current.
@Mixolixplosion3 күн бұрын
@@Elfin4 You can easily cheat british socket shutters but you can't with type f european socket. The shutters only open with the schuko prongs hit them simultaneously. Not to mention the british plug is not foot friendly 😬😅

Do these device manufacturers give any form of life expectancy of such devices running in normal conditions and more importantly, if they do need replacing how many years down the line are manufacturers guaranteeing availability of replacements?

In the Netherlands I’ve learned to use PVC conduit in the seventies, since it’s mandatory here, but I’ve never ever seen it glued? The clips mostly used are nailed clips with the nail already in, way faster to install and if you clip it properly it won’t come apart when pulling the wires. Also we use spring benders and if the corners are very challenging flexible conduit.

Problem with cheap imports like Fusebox, although popular these days, the attention to detail and safety is poor. Open cage devices like the ones used here can lead to misconnection of the busbar and overheating even fire conditions can occur. Also, the design of those mcb's means that to replace a device or upgrade a circuit you have to disconnect every connection to remove the busbar and then the device. Then of course you have to reconnect again and risk misconnecting the busbar into the device. I only fit Crabtree Starbreaker with the plug in devices. A far safer and quicker install and when you need to change a device you just clip out and refit without disturbing any other circuits.

Excellent Video! Very well explained. I have just one question please to clear my mind. In theory, line to line fault is 3phase fault multiply by 0.866, therefore can I just use the fault current measured in L-L (4.11 kA) divided by 0.866 to get the 3phase fault instead of doubling the max fault measured in L-N?

Great video, Where would you fit an inline meter in this setup? The customer wants to monitor the power usage coming into the cabin so they know exactly how much power the cabin is consuming separate from the main dwelling. The meter in question is same size as the RCD and just snaps onto the rail.

Thanks for another great video Gaz. Bad news...I've just been fettling some 50 year old 2L2.5 MICC. I probably bent the cable a little more than I should have (although not more than the radii mentioned in your video) when I was doing the fettling, but now I've pulled the cable straightish again, I seem to have a short across the live, neutral and earth on the cable in question. Is this a common problem and is there anything that I can do to try to rescue the cable?
