Speedflying in Hawaii has taught me some valuable lessons some were from my crashes some were from others. I always said some one should make a video of the basics, because I definitely could have used one. So here it is. The only thing I messed up is my Cobra Launch in the video is not a Cobra Launch. It is a Reverse Launch brought up to the side a little. If you are going to be dumb, be smart about it.
Feel free to comment and make suggestions of better or other techniques to use as well. We are all always learning. Please share with your friends who could use it.
There are some links I use for weather as well down below. Thanks for checking out my video. Hope to fly with you all one day!!!

Thanks for the information. I didn't know this about the B lines killing the wing more safely. I've just bought a swing mirage 11.5 and it's my first speedwing. I will keep this in mind whilst practicing groundhandling first.

Awesome video guys! heaps of helpful stuff in there for people new to soaring speedwings, I'll refer people to these videos when they ask me about getting into speedwings from pg or skydiving. 🤙

Great video man! And best advice to any pilot in any circumstances!,, ‘there’s always another day’! Speed flying is a whole new way of flying compared to any other form of PG flight in regards to ridge soaring, coastal flight, overland, xc, ‘there’s always another day’! A young idiot closed down a local fly spot here in Aus (won’t disclaim the location due to his stupidity), but he was only PG3 rated and had about a years worth of flying experience and was on a wing far too small for his skill level in winds far too strong for most other pilots that day, but he thought he knew better and almost cost him his life! I started on a 16m2 wing and did EXACTLY what you advised, started off in lighter winds, worked my way up a few more knots at a time, and worked my way down to a smaller wing after time and experience allowed me too! Don’t be ‘that guy’ and risk both yours and others lives, and potentially have sites shut down just to get up that day, it’s not worth the risk especially with speed flying on smaller wings! Remember, ‘lift is sacrificed for speed’, so starting off doing some sleddies to begin with on smaller launch sites is a good start in light winds! Great vid 👍🏻

Don't forget to check your binners to make sure you are clipped in and they are fully closed. If you fly with a reserve then check that it is connected and the pins are fully seated. Also unless you have a quiver of wings and switch them around there is absolutely no reason to disconnect your wing from your harness, ever. It will virtually eliminate any possibility of line tangles, overs, knots, etc and make your setup process a lot faster.

Thanks, Guys: Go-Pro gasp-laden footage is great - but it's equally cool to see some solid, sane safety suggestions. Particularly valuable to those like me who may be considering a speed wing as a complement to their usual paraglider for those windier days. "Don't try this at home, kids" :-D

LittleNoiseBoy glad you liked it! Let me know if you have any questions. Speedflying can be just as safe as paragliding, it’s just a little faster.

Very good video my friend. I lived on Maui. 6 Ulumau Place. Unfortunately in our sport the only thing you can't factor in is the common sense Factor LOL you got to have two or three different wings to fly in Hawaii. Thanks again for the video. Paia Maui Hawaii my apologies if I misspelled anyting.

Hey Josh! Sick video! I am moving to Hawaii this summer and planning on getting my P2 as my first step to gradually build up the skills to speedfly. As a reference for way down the road, I noticed you mentioned having foam back protection - what harness systems do you recommend that have the foam or airbag protection?
@8Livingthedream
@8Livingthedream 4 жыл бұрын
Chase Milhorn Hi Chase, Hawaii can be a great place to learn depending on which island you are on. Maui is a great place to get your p2. I use a poc soft foam spine protector and an airbag when I fly wings larger than 15m. My favorite harness is the Level Fusion harness and I do have the airbag option on it. I just take it off sometimes. Hope this helps and lmk if you have any other questions🤙

Thanks Ben! I learned to Paraglide on Maui. The spot on Poli Poli is a great beginner pg spot. I started skimming the ground there on a 20m. It's pretty shallow, so I wouldn't fly much less than that there. "The L" is a great thermal site for full sized wings. There is some potential spots there just north of Honolua Bay on the west side, but I don't think anyone has tried them. Oahu is much better unfortunately. I can connect you with some pg people if you want to fly big wings there. LMK.

Want to fly in high winds, learn to Hang Glide/Sailplane ....................... simples. Turbulence increases "exponentially" with wind speed.

you must be fun at parties... and actually turbulence increases quadratically with windspeed.
