In 1968, there wasn’t as much plastic as there is today. Think water bottles, or laundry detergent. I use powdered laundry detergent in a cardboard box. I have a Berkey water filter and use refillable bottles rather than buying plastic ones. I wash and reuse my ziplock bags; I hang them on an old baby bottle drying rack that looks like a tiny upside down umbrella. We use mason jars for most everything, and reuse glass jars that still have their lids. We compost all our kitchen scraps and throw our yard waste in there as well. I cook most of our meals, but we still end up with quart size empty yogurt containers. These are used for freezing soups, juices, leftovers and the like. Or sometimes for potting up the tomato plants. On the rare occasion that we fry something, like fish or French fries, we use paper grocery bags as oil absorbers. Paper is shredded and added to the compost pile - just make sure plastic doesn’t get in there. Cardboard boxes are stripped of plastic tape and used in the bottom of new raised garden beds, as well as in areas of the garden where we want to keep the weeds down (and then covered with mulch.). We really don’t have much garbage to send out, but sometimes it’s just keeping these things corralled until they are used that can be an issue.

Here in Calif, I return every beverage container I'm able to for the deposit, but I realize not every state does the deposit thing. I saw this really cool video on YT about a group of "hippies" cutting their pop and beer cans flat to shingle a shed roof. I go through enough sparkling water cans that I'm considering trying the process on a scale-size roof Okay, so its the cat shelter on my driveway. Still, a good size to prove out the concept, I thought. Wish me luck!

I've been thinking about how hide garbage after a disaster scenario. In my residential neighborhood, I obviously don't want to advertise that I have food with a pile of fresh cans . Also maybe ways to conceal cooking smells. I've driven past homes and said that something smells good in there 🧑‍🍳

I think cleaning the cans and recycling, putting under the house in your crawl space. Won't hurt a thing. Jut throw it under there when it gets dark. A great idea. You have to think outside the box and get creative 😊

The trash situation was similar in 2000 when I played there. I was there overnight on trash day in the apartment of a friend. There was no trash chute, they just dropped the bags down the center of the stairwell and then took them out to the curb after they got down the stairs. After my gig, there were piles of trash bags on the sidewalk...and they were moving and rustling...they had rats inside going after the garbage...this was normal. You can't compost in most apartment buildings, but we do have garbage disposals here in mine. We have recycling in our building, but they might not be emptied in a trash emergency. No burying, no burning in our apartment building complex. Provided gas grills only. I reuse many things like jars. I reuse ziplock bags by washing them until they break. Then I use them along with plastic shopping bags to clean the cat box into. The trash responsibility must be shared by all who use the designated system. Our building recently downsized to one dumpster for recycling instead of multiple 8 or more big cans. Nobody flattens anything and it's full in a day.

Ha-Ha - I remember the garbage strike, too! And we burnt the papers, not cans and stuff, and that was my job as a kid, and I loved watching the fire in the cinderblock area in the back yard. These days, I take my own garbage out in my truck, cheaper than paying someone to come and pick it up, and my driveway is a half-mile long, so I have to put it in the truck anyway. OK - I agree that we won't have as much garbage if SHTF comes. And I also can, dehydrate, freeze most of my own food. Big pieces of cardboard are super-duper in my hoop house for weed control. I don't use it in the big outdoor garden because it's a home for slugs. But it is good weed control for someone who doesn't have chickens that would dig it up around their bushes and flowers, LOL! I have a little cinderblock area with firebrick set up to burn small pieces of cut-off wood from building things. No one gets a newspaper anymore, and we don't get any magazines anymore so I really don't burn much. Edited to add: I forgot to mention, when I buy something in a box, like crackers, sometimes I save that cardboard. A piece of it in a freezer bag means the cookies, cake, etc., stay flat in the freezer. I've made templates for sewing, too. Kids could do crafts with them, etc.

I wash my plastic bags and reuse unless there has been meat in them, the inner bags from cereal is saved and used as wax paper or to store muffins and bread in. Flatten any boxes and we would burn in our burn pit if it came down to it. Also flatten metal cans and bury them if need be. Kitchen scraps would be composted or buried. We grew up burning also, flatten metal cans with a sledge hammer. We are on a septic so that part is covered . Lots of things for people to think about, we live in the country so it would be easier than people in the city.

What I heard: Food scraps except meat = compost. Cardboard and paper = flatten and save for fire starter and burn or compost. Tin can = reuse or flatten and burn to sterilize then bury. Glass -reuse. Good resources to have on hand: compost area, a burn barrel or pit with fire prevention nearby, aluminum can crusher, heavy duty contractor bags. Tks guys!!

We already separate out our boxes and beverage cans. We burn the cardboard. We dont have trash pickup so we take trips to the dump every 2 weeks or so, storing it in the garage. The chickens get food scraps that are appropriate for them and we have a compost type pile we could stash things in as well.

On disposing tin cans, you can smash them and then use them as shingles on a out door storage shed or as siding to preserve the wood siding. And another idea is to use them as trap snares with a few rocks to alarm you of introders on your property!

My boss and my friends don't believe me when I tell them that my kitchen bag (13 gallons) goes out to the big can about every 10 days, and THAT BIG CAN takes over one month for me to fill it. They say it's impossible...BUT IT'S NOT. First of all, I reuse many of the containers that food items come in. I use them to store things in, to grow seeds in, etc. cardboard can be used in a campfire or on the grill, so can dryer sheets and dryer lint. Secondly, the containers that I DO throw away are washed before they are tossed. Also, when I have eggs for breakfast, if I'm not going to crush them for my veggie garden, I always rinse the inside of the shell out before I put it into the trash. Everything can be reused for something! My kitchen scraps are buried in a large bucket of soil that I keep specifically for that purpose. You can always put a lid on it to keep down the smell or pests, but make sure to have drain holes on the bottom and wet it down once in a while so it will decompose. My concerns are not with garbage or rats from it. I'm more concerned about "black water" (putting it nicely) and how to dispose of that. I have a rainwater catchment system already rigged up for showers and hand-washing clothes....but the toilet, well....ya know. I guess there's always an out house

Occasionally we have missed the trash collection and had to go 4 weeks before our bins could be emptied, luckily we do not create much waste either so it was manageable. Any longer than a month and we would need a serious plan.

I wish we could have a compost pile but in our small backyard it’s just not possible with the smell and attracting critters. A metal burn barrel is what my parents and grandparents used… but if everyone did this we’d all choke. We have a fire pit we’ve used on occasion for BBQ in the Fall so that’s an option. What to do with items that won’t burn still has me scratching my head.🤷🏻‍♀️

All of your paper products are compostable as browns. Now a days all coloured inks are of vegetable origin so that is not a problem. I use all of my glass jars for storage and the plastic ones as well for dehydrated spices and herbs. We use a lot of them. Metal cans can be washed out and used for plant starts instead of buying new plastic ones. All food waste can be fed to the chickens or pigs if you are so lucky. God Bless Joe Scott Muddy dog Ranch

I got the originally for my bucket toilet but they ahve also worked well as camp trash bags for group camps I do with friends. at my mosque we use carryout containers to serve our Friday lunches and the bags those carryouts come in are great for trash bags because of their size. I ahve saved dozens of them for use here at home and as backup trash bags for the mosque. this has sav ed me a ton on buying trash bags
