In today's video I'll give the pep talk I wish all new grad nurses could have. Nursing school doesn't prepare you for your first job and that can be a very lonely feeling as you are graduating and realizing you will be getting a nursing job and may not feel ready. Being a new grad nurse is so hard. You graduate from nursing school and so often do not feel ready to be a nurse at all. And guess what? Nobody is! Nursing school does not make you ready to start your job as a new grad nurse. Your job will do that. So if you are a new grad nurse and don't feel ready to be a nurse? This is for you.

I'm on my 2nd week as a new nurse, this video helped me a lot. There are things that are "common sense" for a seasoned nurse but for a new nurse, because we feel so overwhelmed and scared that we forget the little things sometimes. Still a long way to go but just hang in there you guys, we got this!

Yes yes yes to all of these! I graduated a year ago, and I’m just AMAZED at how far I’ve come in the last 6 months alone. Firstly - Liz, you were spot-on with your assessment of the NCLEX. Not that a person shouldn’t study (use UWorld - it’s worth it!), but I felt like that test was the final hazing ritual of the gaslighting experience that is nursing school. I remember texting my friends, “I don’t even know WHAT that was testing.” But I passed, and that’s what matters. Secondly - I appreciate what you said on being open to jobs. I was 110% that I wanted to be a hospice nurse. I got a home hospice job with a great company right out of school. It was not a good fit for me at all, and I left at the end of orientation. I almost left nursing, because all I had wanted to do was be a hospice nurse. I had no idea what to do. But then I applied for and got a job in acute care, working 12 hour shifts (two things I thought I never wanted to do it), and I love it. Some days are better than others, but I do love it. Finally - nursing is learned on the job. It really is. Be humble, be open to learning and feedback, be curious and be gentle with yourself. Celebrate the wins, as Liz says. Keep a list of them. You got this. It’s so nerve-wracking and exciting and scary, but I promise you, you will look back in 6 months and be like, “holy cow, it only takes me a minute to hang an IV abx, when it used to take 10.” You got this! 💪🏻💪🏻

I graduated 4 years ago and never had the chance to work. In a couple of weeks, I'm finally getting my license and my anxiety is building over time knowing that I have to get into a nursing job soon. Thanks for all the kind words 🙏🏼 I also battle with my impostor syndrome picking on me for my lack of experience and it can be crippling when my mind spirals on it so I try to review my nursing concepts as much as I can. Thanks again!!

Thank you for this video! I'm about to graduate with my BSN in 2 months. I'm so thrilled to be done with school but those fears about feeling underqualified are REAL. I always thought I would feel more confident at this point. Instead, I'm overwhelmed at how much I still DON'T know. Glad to know I'm not alone.

You'te the best! I am a new grad, just came off a nightmare day at the hospital, and my inner saboteur really gave me a hard time. Questioning my choice of work, myself and everything in between. Last night was kinda like that day. At the end of my shift i was thinking to myself. Will i ever get better? Am i good enough to be a nurse? Always slow at passing meds, ask dumb questions to other nurses, couldnt sleep even thought i have to work again tonight. Then I watched your video 😭 you made me cry 😭 Thank you for the video

I found your video, calmed myself down, and near brought myself to tears because of your encouragement and words of wisdom. Nursing school during COVID already feels like one weird long dream more than something that really happened, I’m glad I’m not alone in feeling unprepared. This video is such a comfort.

I’m a new LPN and I’m worried about making the the wrong call. That feeling of realizing that I’m actually now in charge of another’s wellbeing terrifies the hell out of me. As a CNA I could pass the problem off to the nurse and now I am the nurse and now it’s my problem to figure out. I know that I’m not alone but I still feel terrified that I will inevitably screw up so bad that I won’t be able to fix it.

ask all the questions whenever you feel like this. I STILL feel like this. It does get better, but I really do think having a healthy dose of this attitde keeps patients safe!

I'm on my 5th day alone after training for 3 months on a med surg floor. It's terrifying and everyday feels like a giant obstacle but thankfully my whole floor is so supportive!

Having a supportive unit makes ALL the difference in the world! It took me over 6 months to feel like I wasn't just flailing around trying to tread water. Hope this week is a little easier!

OMG! Thank you. I am coming off of my 12 week day orientation on a med/surge floor. I’ll have a 2 week orientation on nights and then on my own. I am SCARED TO DEATH. I do feel like I haven’t seen enough, or done enough and I don’t know anyone.

Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for this. I graduated in May, and I just finished my orientation (the part not on the floor where they talk about policies etc) and I thought EVERYONE knew so much more than me. My imposter syndrome was screaming at me the whole time. This video was immensely helpful in helping me relax a bit. I'm so grateful I stumbled on your videos. They are amazing.

Thank you for this 🙏🏼 I did not go to nursing school but I have imposter syndrome a lot. And it’s hard for me to ignore it. Im a color person first language is Spanish so basically I know Spanglish so that’s an added obstacle for me. But knowing that you also struggled with this gives me more hope

Hi Nurse Liz! I’m a new grad BSN (also Liz 😎) and I just finished my first full week of orientation on a medical ICU (also the hospitals only Covid ICU). I have two previous degrees in health-related fields, undergrad and graduate, but finally bit the bullet on nursing school which started 2 months into lockdown lol (side note: nursing school/Nclex/licensing was more challenging and frustrating processes than the previous degrees COMBINED!) I have never felt such imposter syndrome in my life!!! We had like half a minute of ICU experience and were really limited with high-risk patients because of Covid. I’m at an excellent teaching hospital and I’ve already learned SO MUCH in 3 days with 2 of my preceptors, though I keep expecting someone from management will pull me aside and recommend I start somewhere less critical. I feel like a clumsy little kid and overwhelmed doesn’t begin to describe my headspace!! This video came out when I was about to graduate and it was so beyond comforting, but now I’m genuinely wondering if what I’m feeling is new grad jitters or if maybe I’m not cut out for ICU. I didn’t have an intense draw towards a specialty. I am not afraid to ask questions, especially if I think I might do something unsafe or incorrectly, but is there any way to know if a specific unit/specialty is a bad fit vs. “this is just how it feels for awhile”? ❤️ your channel!

I'm 4 months in as a new grad on a cardiac step down unit. I feel so many emotions on a daily basis and a lot of the times it feels like I am already burnt out. I know that being short staff most of the time has a big role to play on my exhaustion but then come the insecurities and I begin to feel really down on myself. That last part about imposter syndrome made me cry real life tears. Its so easy to get carried away by those intrusive thoughts that tell me I'm not good enough. But you made a good point, I HAVE done a lot of hard things to get to where I am now. If past, younger me could acoomplish all that I did, I know that older and wiser me can do anything. A part of me deep inside always knows this, but its hard to bring her to the surface sometimes. I love the tip to write down your wins, I'm definitely trying that! Thanks so much Nurse Liz, words cannot describe how much YOUR words meant to me today.

Thank you so much for making this video Liz! I've felt so many of these things as a new grad (May 2021), and will be writing my NCLEX soon! I've been a peer tutor and mentor throughout school and performed well academically and in clinical, but I still feel this strange imposter syndrome! I've started working my dream job in a busy Emergency Department and there is so much information that I never learned in school, especially in regards to emergency protocols, textbook vs. reality (haha) and multi-tasking/interacting with the various other hospital roles and physicians. I'm asking a ton of questions every shift, but it still stings when I miss something or realize that I don't have all of the answers. I'm just trying to be humble and open to learning, and luckily have an amazing, supportive team; I can ask for help and they have my back

Love the intro and vlog style of this vid 😊. Graduated nursing school last month and have been loosely studying for the nclex. Still waiting for the good ol ATT number so I can schedule my exam though… however, I am super thankful that I have had a year of experience on a cardiac medsurg floor and accepted a position on this floor as a nurse :). Love this pep talk! So much truth! “You can do hard things.” Yes you can! I jus got off orientation on a small hospital where we do med surg inpatient and the ER! And guess what? They assigned me the ER on my first day off of orientation! And I felt like I did a good job! I had the head nurse on the shift help me out some, but I was in charge! Tell me this a year ago and I would have said no way! We can do this. Nursing is doing hard things all the time! But in the end, the accomplishment is worth it!

So true! Ive been a nurse for 8 years and I still feel like a new grad sometimes. I will say, I really did like nursing school though. Maybe I'm weird lol, but we really learned a LOT and had a whole bunch of clinical hours where we were very hands on. I went to CFCC and we were allowed to do WAY more than UNCW or BSN program students. And in my opinion, the community college new grads were way more prepared than the BSN new grads that were, maybe due to the more clinical time? who knows. Love your videos!

Thank you for saying where you went!! I love having that resource to offer people. I 100% agree that community college programs prepare you far better than most BSN programs. I almost always would have preferred to have a CC nursing student vs a BSN student on the floor.

I graduated a year ago and started working in the ICU a few months ago as my 1st job. I have been on my own for about 2.5months now and I learn every day. I used to get major anxiety before my shifts and now the anxiety isn't as bad but still there. I feel like I'm always asking questions but I rather ask a question even when it feels dumb and well I've made mistakes. What I have done is to make it a point to learn and not repeat the same mistakes and not let that repeat in my head till it makes me sick. I'm and overthinker and it's so easy for me to dwell on one thing but now I just try to take it one shift at a time. I thought ICU was my dream job but some days I'm not so sure. Still I'm giving myself the time to learn and figure out what I really what to do. Thank you for your videos Liz.

Well am just some one who is going to start a career in nursing this has made me feel super super super positive and I feel I can I was at first very scared to choose this path but guess what.. fear never allows you to achieve your dreams and I guess I will now stop getting scared and just work hard till I reach where I want to see myself thank u once again by charging me with positive vibes!!

I've been told nursing students only learn how to pass the NCLEX and the basics of nursing and then we learn the rest on the job LOL...I know a lot from being a patient myself but also feel like I know nothing if that makes sense LOL--- I definitely have imposter syndrome and feel scared to take care of others and unready...one more semester!!! Was supposed to graduate this one but COVID....

Oh Covid. :( i totally agree that nursing school is taught to pass the NCLEX which doesn't measure your ability as a nurse so its all a mess. Your perspective of being a patient yourself will help you more than you realize! You can do this!

I'm about to start in a Level 1 Trauma hospital in my area as a new grad. My goal was to get into a Surgical Trauma ICU, but I still got into a Trauma unit last minute. I already took a job at Duke Hospital when I got the call from the trauma unit and thought I couldn't pass it up. I thought I couldn't get the job there so I went on with my days finishing exams one after another when I got the call in the ER. Good thing I looked up my offer letter and asked the recruiter if I was signing up to a contract and since it's an at will job, I was able to take the job offer in the ER. My goal is to be a sponge at work and just soak up all information and skills. I'm planning to transfer to the STICU upstairs later as my ultimate goal, but I'm willing to embrace the fact that ER might be for me as well. All in all, I also get the feeling of dread and self sabotage as a future nurse taking care of humans, especially in a very acute and higher acuity patients. Thanks for reminding me that this feeling is normal.

I hope this is my future soon. I keep doubting myself but I know I can do it. I don't feel worthy enough but have the desire to be a PA and maybe work for a charity organization later on. The fear that I have is just paying for it some illnesses last year messed me up financially and now it is so scary to think about the cost. This would be my 2nd degree and I don't have access to fafsa anymore and don't know a thing about scholarships. Loand scare me and feel like a type of financially bound slavery. I just wish there was more aid, grants qnd help for those wanting to further themselves. Thank you for all you do, how you help all of us and you showing that you can be highly professional and have a family too. It is my greatest desire to pursue this path and I hope to one day soon.

Oh gosh. I totally get it about the cost. it's ridiculous that you can't have access to fafsa anymore. I had to do private loans through Sallie Mae. They were fine, it was just a lot of money. I hope you find clarity in your decision!

I'm in critical care float pool,new grad.Had 3 weeks of orientation in micu with not the best preceptor....we didn't have critical patients.and now I'm completely overwhelmed🤦‍♀️

thats EXACTLY how I felt when I went from adult med surg to peds. like I was brand new again. Hope you love the NICU! I always wanted to work in one but it never worked out

I’m a new grad in a smallish adult medical and neuro ICU. I feel prepared enough to be off orientation (knowing I still have many nurses near me if I need help/have questions), but I’m not sure if I’m enjoying nursing which is so discouraging since I suffered so much through school to get to this point. I have an amazing manager and encouraging unit but the job doesn’t feel rewarding or enjoyable. I’m trying to give it a year to have the ICU experience (it’s been 2 months since I started) and also just trying to give it more time to see if maybe I’ll love it after a few months. I went into nursing because I felt passion to do so, not for money so I’m not sure why it feels like the passion isn’t there anymore. Almost like I’m burned out. Is this normal? Did I romanticize the nursing profession too much? Am I just in the wrong nursing field?

4th week of my ABSN program. At least once week, I have to talk myself off the imposter syndrome cliff... Lol. Don't even want to think about what it's going to feel like after I graduate. Well, let me get back to studying for the patho/pharma exam I've already spent a billion hours studying for and am still hoping for at least a C. 😉 As usual, thanks for making me smile, Liz! ♥️

Hello, Liz! Can I ask you if there is any disadvantage to achieve an associate's degree in a community college and go to MSN program in a college or university when getting a job as a NP? I know most people go to MSN after getting a BSN. I wonder if the former choice has any drawbacks compared to the latter. And do employers consider Nursing schools' reputation and ranking important? I mean I wonder if I would have to go to the TOP nursing school.

Thank you for this. I am a new Grad and landed a job in the OR. I am ready, but at the same time, not ready. I still have to take the NCLEX. I am not ready for what happens to my OR position if I do not pass the NCLEX the 1st time

I graduated nursing school way back in 2005. I started out in a CTICU, pending passing the NCLEX. Not only did I have this new job, I also bought my first brand new car. So a lot was riding on me passing the NCLEX because if I didn't pass, I lose my job and gotta figure out how to pay the car note. Here's something I did..... DON'T YOU DARE THINK ABOUT FAILING!!! 😂 Think positive, go into that exam and show it YOU ARE THE BOSS! Treat that exam like your bitch! 😂😂 Sorry ...did I go too far? 😁 You got this!!

I’m broken in a little but i started in medical psych. Which is still difficult. Every rare once in awhile we will get a blood transfusion , but even in medical you do not get as much experience as a Med Suge floor. I’ve got over 3 yrs but I struggle most to get ahold of doctors, nurse sups. It almost feels like the system is flawed in the main hospital. No one in the hospital wants to treat poor homeless psych pt’s medical needs. It’s like psych in every hospital is the trash can and we struggle to get supplies and pts to ICU when they code.

Thank you ❤️ My first job as nurse was in covid-19 department and these 6 months felt really crazy. Now I am one week in neurology department, and most of the time I am learning how to slow down. Half of the time I spend feeling like I am not born to be a nurse, and other half remembering that you don't get born as nurse, but through years and years of experience you become one. As the youngest in my department ( 20yo) I felt like I don't know anything. But you are right, when you have good colleagues and ask a ton of questions, you can't really make a big mistake. Nursing is learning on the go.

For anyone out there, I need some advise. I graduated nursing school in 2010 but I finally took the exam and passed this year, 2023. But after 4 months of studying for the Nclex, I feel like I don’t know anything. I just feel like “how am I gonna be a good nurse since I haven’t had any medical experience since I graduated soooo long ago?😢how will I get a job with my history?😮 any advice of what I should do to prepare myself? I'm working on my FNP. I start precepting with a physician in the fall. I'm terrified I won't have a clue. Do I know enough? Have I learned enough to not look like an idiot? 🤷‍♀️

In the beginning of clinical it is TOTALLY OK to not know most things! As long as you can describe where you will look to find the info you should be good! I did find that physician preceptors did a thing where they kinda grill you for info, and a physician I precepted with told me this was common in their training so then he did it. I found it really abrassive, but they often don't mean it that way. So just know that going into it! It's just how they learned to teach

I know this video was a while ago, but it’s still appreciated. I’m in a new-grad training program and I really needed to see this video and read these comments… Because hanging an IV bag does take me 10 minutes! Especially when your bag is missing and a pharmacy tech has to help you find that another nurse had it on their cart, then the PICC doesn’t flush so your preceptor and supervisor get involved to help, four calls to the doctor later you’ve discovered the PICC has lost good placement after a STAT X-ray, then I’m placing an IV on a patient in restraints for a bag that was due over an hour ago! Nursing school does not prepare you for all of that. My preceptor said something funny, that really “interesting” things keep happening during my training - so I’ll see it all! Yet all I keep seeing are the things I don’t know instead of what I’ve learned thus far. This video brought me to tears, and I thank you for the kind words. I don’t even feel that I deserve them… so that is the extent of my imposter-syndrome! Thanks for reminding this new nurse that she will surprise herself if she can hold onto good advice and be patient.

I want to do nursing but the costs petrify me! I can't use FAFSA because apparently I'm a "dependent" until I'm 25, despite living over a thousand miles away from any family members and having supported myself alone since I was eighteen. I'm 22 and because I'm under 25 the thing requires my parent(s) to give out their tax info, but they're awful people and there's just no getting help on that stuff from either of them. The whole thing is asinine. I wish somebody would've told me I still rely on them when I bought my house. /eyeroll So it would be private loans for me, and that scares me more than the FAFSA lol

Isn't that ridiculous? I had the same issue. So did my husband who is estranged from his parents. But because they made "too much" money he didn't qualify for FAFSA loans even though he moved out at 17. DUMB

I know this is very late but have you looked into being emancipated? I'm not sure what the rules are in your state but it may be an option for you to be declared independent.
