A strap wrench and chain wrench just crunched up the filter. Not much room for channel locks on my Ford Ranger. So, I used a 17 inch long flat blade screwdriver with a 3/8 inch wide tip like I as going to flip a pancake. The rubber gasket being the pancake. Just use a hammer to tap the screwdriver on the can right along the rim where the gasket is until it crushes the gasket and filter can inward toward the center axis. Did this for a small section about 1-1/4 inch long and then tapped off axis with the screwdriver to make it rotate. It's stuck because of the gasket. Just separate the gasket to reduce the removal torque needed. This was easy. I did drain the filter with a small hole beforehand and I jacked up the truck a bit to get more room. The actual tapping took less than 5 minutes.

Honda OEM car filters say 3/4 turn and have a torque spec printed on the filter. I tried putting one on with a torque wrench out of curiosity and it was exactly 3/4 turn from the point the gasket touched. It's a very low torque spec BTW, around 9 ft-lbs. I did that purely out of curiosity. Normally I use the 3/4 turn method. Having done with the torque wrench once, I'm now totally confident with the 3/4 turn method. And no filters have any problem coming off.

Hi Shane... the cardboard idea to prevent oil draining on exhausts/engine components works well. may I add an idea to your wonderful series.... I have been using regular Aluminium foil for my oil Filter changes for some time now and it's a breeze. You can shape it as you choose... funnel like at one end to ease drainage and shape up any edges/sides to prevent spillage. It is so versatile and cheap and also highly effective. I hope this helps my friend... loving the channel by the way : )

If you have a really tight filter and your strap keeps slipping try putting some course valve grinding paste on the filter this gives a good grip surface for the strap both metal or fabric

I bought this '$9 strap wrench at advanced auto saved the day its a chrome metal square shape rod with a black strap and connects to a 1/2 ratchet.... it worked great and is great for tight spaces saved the day

I have always torqued my oil filters on. I never had any problems removing them. A dealer recently did the oil filter as part of a major service, now I can't get the filter off.

So what is the torque spec for an oil filter? The only one that I've seen is in the service manual of a 2002 Dodge Intrepid and it was 12 ft lbs (144 in lbs). I've been using that spec on all my cars and it's been great! No leaks and comes off nicely.

Because some oil filters are covered and there's just not enough space for the nut.

Pretty solid advice. However, I would disagree with wanting to place a strap wrench closer to the threaded end. The standard "filter cup" essentially grips the filter on the very end, precisely where filter manufacturers put the flats. Placing a strap wrench on those flats is just as effective as near the base (and often times the only easily accessible part of the filter). The domed end of the filter is extremely resistant to crushing because of the disc of material which caps the end. And because of the cylindrical structure of the filter, rotational torque is equally spread along the entire length of the filter. One runs into trouble while using filter pliers or cheap band wrenches, which do not apply torque evenly and have a tendency to buckle. Once one of those tools puts a dent in the filter then all bets are off! It's for this reason that I prefer OES or OEM filters - specified tools indicated in the WSM will fit every single time.Still, solid advice all around! Loving the series!

Thanks, Jason! The whole idea of putting ith close is for stuck filters. But you don't know until you attempt to remove right? I've found this tip of moving the strap in further to be to real deal for removing stuck ones without tearing the canister off. The flats are on top as it makes sense for correctly installed filters. The new 17mm nuts are awesome but I've even heard of techs ripping those due to the ease of over-tightening! Oh the reality of following the last tech can be painful! Thank you! Please share! Ahh yeah. So simple it evades us at first. The dusty stack of filter wrenches, gadgets and a big spike in the box of oil filter "no more's"... in this vid, you saved the new guys a ton of wasted coin if they'll follow the suggestion - a simple strap wrench with socket opening, heavy-duty nylon strap at least 2 inches wide for the grip surface. Maybe ten bucks, lots of them under different names, and common. Never had one fail on ANY filter, even truck and heavy equipment spin-on's. It gets stubborn, you just get a half-inch drive flex handle on it, wrap it snug as you can with some room to rotate, and put the arm on it. Well done.

I used the strap on my 2018 fat bob oil filter, the dealer has put it on so tight that when I used the strap it snapped, I've also tried the 2 machine screws going through the harley oil filter tool but that didn't work its just ripped the filter, I've tied everything to get it off but it won't move a single mm, with the milwaukee M8 engine the space around it is tight so using other tools is next to impossible. I can't take the bike to my local dealership (I'm UK based) as it has permently closed its doors and is no longer in business due to covid, the next dealership is 50 miles away but has been closed since before Xmas with no date as to when it's going to reopen, if it indeed it does open and doesn't also close down premently. I now have a bike with no engine oil and a ripped filter, to say I'm miserable is an understatement.

NO OIL FILTER WRENCH???? take a big screwdriver and drive it thru the side of filter with a hammer and twist filter with screwdriver. i done this many times.

Works 50% of the time. Other half leaves you with Swiss cheese, no oil, and completely stuck filter. Ask how I know...
