I had commented below about how much I loved your explanation of how to tuck and curl. I was able to use this method earlier today and had great success! I use a domestic machine, not a longarm. But your method worked great. Thank you again!.

Lanelle Hatcher that’s awesome to hear! Welcome to feathers!!! I’m so glad to hear that you met with success and had fun. Congratulations!! Many quilters and even longarmers are afraid of them. You jumped right in and got it!!!

I know this was 4 years old but it was new to me. I've been watching a lot of videos on feathers and this was the best one I've seen teaching to honor the line to create the movement in the feathers. Thank you!

I used this technique on a customer's quilt. It looks beautiful. This was much easier and looked better than the other way I was doing it. I guess that we are never to old to learn techniques. Thanks again.

Linda S. Jones, that's great! I always say, if I can learn just one new thing a day, I'm doing great :). Glad you are able to add this to your repertoire. Have a fantastic day.

Thank you so much for these videos! I love feathers, and did a whole 5" border on the last quilt I quilted. It was so much fun, and looks really cool! (I quilt my own quilts on a domestic Janome machine!) You Tube has been a huge influence to me - piecing & quilting!! Keep up the good work! (P.S. I've been practicing feathers since I started quilting in 2013, so they didn't come naturally! But once I got the right "curve" for the "formal feathers", I've never looked back!! I want to encourage others to try!!)

Love your method of teaching and even though I do my quilting on a domestic machine I learned a lot watching your methods. I am just learning but find the results I like best are when the plumes are well rounded and the return to the stem is at about a 45 degree angle. Thanks so much for showing the transition and giving such a comprehensible explanation.

Thank you so much for your very clear instructions. I am doing ok with my feathers so long as they are going straight, it's the tucking and the wave motion that has been giving me trouble. (I won't even talk about corners!) Anyway.... your instructions just set off a light bulb. I'm doing all my work on a domestic so I love the way your videos translate to that work as well. Thank you soooo much!

Lanelle, thank you so very much. You are very kind. I’m so happy to hear that you had a light bulb moment and I hope you love the feathers you create. Once you get them, they’ll be very fun to do. Always tell yourself that your going to make a pretty feather as you start. I found, when I did that, that it help me to have the confidence I needed to begin. Have fun with these, and thank you again for your wonderful comments. You made my day!

Your teaching has made me now able to do feathers. THANK YOU! My question--when I want to do feathers continuously on a border how do I merge into a new corner?
@thethreadworksfactory4781
@thethreadworksfactory4781 5 жыл бұрын
Terri Neil, I’m so glad to hear that! This type of feather is usually terminated at the center of each border. If you want to do a continuous feather around the entire border, I have done drawing videos that show you how to come into and out if corners. You can find them on this channel. Have fun with your feathers!

I like the way you do this feather and have explained it. The stopping point midway on a curve really adds a nice dimension. One question, how do you remove the chalk marks?
@thethreadworksfactory4781
@thethreadworksfactory4781 7 жыл бұрын
Tom D thank you for your kind comments. I use a spray bottle of water with a piece of black batting to rub, or you can dampen the piece of batting and rub. Have a great day.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't know was that easy to remove the chalk . Hope you have a nice day as well.

Tom D sometimes you don't even need to use a damp cloth. Sometimes it comes off by simply wiping your hand, but for chalk that is got more grip, a little moisture always does the trick. I hope you have a fantastic day! Take care.

I like the way you teach, I just cant seem to do feathers, I practice on a dry erase board over and over and they look awful, my feathers look like long circles, I guess I need to just to continue to practice, just dont seem to understand why I cant get the curves .

Hi Olympia, I too can really sympathise with you, as I was exactly the same until recently. It was almost like the light had turned on in my brain and all of a sudden I was drawing such beautiful feathers. I thought at first this has to be a fluke, so I started to do feathers within different shapes to see If I really had the hang of it... and Whallah !!!! I too was doing feathers. So please don't despair. Keep practicing. It took me at least 3 months to master by doodling every moment that I had. I more or less thought of the plumes as a half of a heart tear drop where the tail came back to where it had left the spine, and the rounded bounce back was half of the curve of drawing a heart. Another great tip is to photocopy a FM feather and pop it into a plastic sleeve and use a white board marker to trace around it like you would if you were FMQ it. And when your done you just simply wipe it off and start again. This helps to train your brain. I hope this helps. if. I can do it, you most certainly will. Let me know how you go.

Olympia Jasper me too; I've still got some work to do on feathers. I can sketch them perfectly but then when I get on my Jazz, they don't look they same. I just ordered a long arm so I hope my skills improve quick. And yes, these are excellent videos which I appreciate. What did we ever do before KZfaq?

Shelley Murrell thank you for watching and for asking a question. I plan on doing a multi tutorial on marking a blank small top and quilting it out. I probably won't be able to, but I'm hoping to fit it into my schedule. It would be wonderful to teach something like that, and once you learn the basics, it's not so intimidating.thank you, and have a wonderful day.

I agree, they are harder on a domestic, but practice by sketching them out and they may come easier to you. Don't stop trying... you will get there. It just takes some practice. I have faith in you!
